24.01.2022 Tragically, suicide takes the lives of eight Australians every day. Every loss devastates families, friends and in our case those who are supporting workers to get their lives back. Over the weekend we learnt that we lost one of our workers who had been battling with worklessness, family issues and adjusting to a statutory rate that meant I couldn’t afford to feed my three kids. I got an email from Colin Seery CEO of Lifeline today, and it made me think about the pain of wo...rklesseness. Colin said when someone calls Lifeline, we know it can lead to a different outcome. Our worker’s tragic loss means he didn’t get the chance to get his life back. Let’s not treat workers like they have a disease that can only be treated by punishing them with ‘incentives to get back to work’. We need to do more to recognise the signs that injured workers need our help. That worklesseness is a mental health issue too. 19.01.2022 One of the most challenging areas for employers is managing the heady mix of fun, alcohol and festivities during the ’silly season’. Christmas parties are notorious for inducing unorthodox and uncharacteristic behaviour in seemingly conventional employees, but what about those employees that choose to confess to fellow team members whilst under the influence. Actevate recommends that employees who are subjected to concerning confessionals during a Christmas party should t...ake the appropriate action. If you notice red flags in a colleague’s behaviour here are some tips for providing support and opening the discussion in a helpful way. Bear in mind to only have this conversation if you feel comfortable; and if you feel that it is best not to have this discussion, then don’t feel pressured to. Ask them how they are feeling and allow them the opportunity to share. Suggest that they seek support. Spend time talking about their experiences in a non-judgemental way. Encourage them to exercise and eat well. Refer them to resources at work, such as an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Notify HR or Management about the issue.
