24.01.2022 This election, let's build a #BetterNormal greens.org.au/act/better-normal

23.01.2022 "If someone has been a good tenant, looked after the place and always paid the rent on time we don't believe that landlords should be able to just kick them out.... "Sometimes landlords do this because they didn't like being asked to fulfil a legal obligation like repairing the property or allowing a pet, or because they don't particularly like the tenant. "This will give renters the right to stay in their house for years unless the landlord has a genuine reason to terminate a tenancy or use the house for non-rental purposes - Shane Rattenbury MLA

21.01.2022 The old parties are fighting over the number of trees they’ll plant. Don’t get us wrong, we Greens love trees, and we have a comprehensive plan to increase Canberra’s canopy to at least 30%. But there’s so much more that Canberra’s environment needs. Our Repairing the Land package is a big investment in environmental conservation. You can read it at greens.org.au/act/repairing-the-land... Our comprehensive Repairing Waterways package will improve the health of the ACT’s aquatic ecosystems, protecting them from damage, and restoring water quality for recreational use. You can see it here greens.org.au/act/repairing-waterways Read our full plan to Build a Better Normal at greens.org.au/act/better-normal #BetterNormal

21.01.2022 Let's build a #BetterNormal greens.org.au/act/better-normal

21.01.2022 Climate change is the biggest threat we face, yet some groups will be hit harder than others. As renewable electricity becomes more affordable, renters and people on low incomes who can’t afford to transition to electricity are stuck paying more for polluting, outdated gas technology. This means that wealthier Canberrans typically pay less to heat their homes with clean energy and good insulation than people on lower incomes.... The burning of fossil fuel gas to heat and cool our buildings contributes more than 20% of the ACT’s carbon footprint. In Australia gas is increasingly extracted by coal seam gas fracking which causes huge environmental and health impacts. Check out our package https://greens.org.au/act/just-transition

16.01.2022 Huge props to the School Strikers who braved the weather to let the Liberals know a gas-led recovery is no recovery at all.

15.01.2022 The ACT Greens have a plan to pay artists first and fairly, not last and under the poverty line. We will support our local arts community by trialing a three year Canberra Creative Industries funding certainty program for 100 local, professional artists to produce original works and engage the community with art, in long term residencies and commissioned community-led art projects The Greens will ensure all government funding that incorporates an arts element pays professiona...l practising artists first. And we will require a minimum of local content at government-funded festivals, events and arts programs to build our local arts industry. If you want to know more about our plan check out greens.org.au/act/valuing-the-arts #BetterNormal

15.01.2022 We're proud that our candidates have signed the Education Union’s Public Education Pledge. With the ACT AEU we have committed to: Put public education first... Fair funding for public schools Temperature-controlled and smoke-free classrooms Fight for the right student assessment, not NAPLAN Cap class sizes, without exception Great school library services Bring CIT into the Education portfolio The ACT Greens are the only party to get a perfect report card from Canberra’s teachers. But don’t take our word for it - check out what the AEU has to say www.aeuact.org.au/ne/latest-news/2020/education-report-card

14.01.2022 The ACT has reached a nation-leading milestone of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% on 1990 levels. The latest report under the Climate Change and Greenh...ouse Gas Reduction ACT shows the ACT’s shift to 100% renewable electricity has allowed us to meet this ambitious target. When the Greens used balance of power to set this target in 2010, many people simply didn’t think this was possible. We’re so proud to have made this a reality, and be a beacon for the country. Key achievements in the last year include: meeting the 100% renewable electricity target reducing emissions by 45% from 1990 levels committing to an all-electric Canberra Hospital expansion releasing the ACT Climate Change Strategy 2019-25 and Canberra’s Living Infrastructure Plan removing the requirement for gas connection in new suburbs upgrading energy efficiency of public housing and continuing the Solar for Low Income Program. Having reached this fantastic milestone we will now need be focusing on the challenging sectors of transport and fossil fuel gas. Read the report at bit.ly/ClimateReport2020

11.01.2022 They actually want us to achieve real fundamental changes. - Emma Davidson MLA - Member for Murrumbidgee This election saw Canberrans endorse our bold plans to build a #BetterNormal that tackles the challenges we face to make life better for our community. Having Emma, Rebecca Vassarotti and Shane Rattenbury in Cabinet will ensure we can deliver on the trust that Canberra has placed in us.

11.01.2022 We have released a major plan to overhaul Canberra’s planning system, to put people before property developers. Planning must deliver world-class buildings that are climate-ready, sustainable, well-designed and constructed, and serve our city’s needs over coming decades. Our plan will:... Set a 10 year pathway for international best practice on climate-ready and environmentally-sustainable buildings Change the law so that major sites are sold for high-quality proposals, not just to the highest bidder Provide a new Skills, Apprenticeships and Research-Industry Partnerships Fund to shift to world’s best practice on climate-ready and environmentally-sustainable buildings Return building certification of big residential developments to Government hands Change the Tree Protection Act and planning system to protect our mature trees and make room for trees during development Reform the planning system to insist on better quality development Better fund the heritage system so it can protect the things we love about Canberra. Read our full plan for planning at greens.org.au/act/planning #BetterNormal

09.01.2022 A big congratulations to Amy MacMahon, Greens for South Brisbane for her historic win in South Brisbane, and to Michael Berkman - Greens MP for Maiwar for retai...ning his seat of Maiwar with a massive swing. We’re still waiting to see what happens with the final count in seats like Cooper and McConnel but what’s clear is that our message resonated with Queenslanders they’re fed up with politics only working for big corporations and want to see a politics that works for ordinary people. The historic swings in these seats are the result of a massive people powered campaign with thousands of volunteers delivering our powerful message, chatting to people at their doors and on the phone. At the core of our platform is about ensuring that every Queenslander gets a share of our state’s enormous mining wealth. We’ve seen mining corporations export over $480 billion worth of resources offshore over the last 10 years and only pay 7% in royalties and it’s time for that to change. In that same period child poverty in Queensland reached 20% the highest in the country so we know Queenslanders aren’t getting their fair share. This election was about everyday Queenslanders vs mining billionaires. And Queenslanders are making their voice heard. Yesterday was just the beginning. Photo credit: Megan Keene keene-beans.com

09.01.2022 In a deliberate move away from corporatising our public space, the Greens have announced a plan to make Canberra an ad-free city. We will remove outdoor corporate advertising from public spaces, so that the parts of our city we share remain a community asset and for public good in Canberra. Canberrans hate the corporate advertising starting to encroach into our city. We’ve got to push back before it’s too late.... Our plan will put Canberra back in step with other leading cities around the world who are saying no to this kind of large-scale corporate advertising in the public realm. All part of our plan for Building a Better Normal. Read all about our outdoor advertising policies at greens.org.au/act/ad-free-canberra #BetterNormal

08.01.2022 We don't want to return to normal once we overcome the pandemic - we want to build a #BetterNormal With polls opening today, read Shane Rattenbury MLA's thoughts on why the government needs bold plans going forward https://www.canberratimes.com.au//politicians-need-to-act-

08.01.2022 We have announced plans to transition over time to a clean, green, all-electric Canberra, with the goal of making the ACT ‘fossil fuel gas free’ by 2040. So-called ‘natural’ gas is a polluting fossil fuel and contributes 22% of the ACT’s total greenhouse gas emissions. At a time of climate emergency, we must transition away from gas and get to zero net emissions or we will face the catastrophic consequences of irreversible global warming. The Greens have a plan to put our cli...mate first, today announcing a series of climate action commitments, including: A $20 million financial support program to assist businesses and residents who have existing gas connections to transition to efficient electric appliances. Ruling out greenfield gas connections in new suburbs from 2021. An intensive 2 year transition program working with industry and the community to end new infill gas connections from 2023, including an all-electric Molonglo commercial centre. New support for community scale battery storage and microgrids. Delivering a 10 year pathway to shift to world’s best practice on climate-ready and environmentally-sustainable buildings and planning. 07.01.2022 Everyone deserves a safe and secure place to live. We have announced a comprehensive package to support Canberra renters, including building more affordable rental homes, ending no cause evictions, banning rent bidding, and more funding for housing advocacy services. Our plan includes:... Ending ‘no cause’ evictions, allowing people to stay in their houses and make their house a home Increasing the number of affordable rental properties in Canberra Making rentals more sustainable and affordable to live in Making renting easier, by streamlining the rental application process, banning rent bidding, properly funding tenant advocacy services and supporting people who face discrimination into secure rental homes. Check out the whole package at greens.org.au/act/renters-rights #BetterNormal

07.01.2022 The ACT Greens have a plan to create 5000 nest boxes to house local bird and mammal species across Canberra. As part of the plan, the Greens will deliver: 5000 nest boxes, creating safe homes for local animals and bringing greater biodiversity to our city. ... A new network of ecologically diverse neighbourhood forests in urban open spaces across Canberra Diversifying our urban flora and fauna, including a plan to grow and maintain thousands of new trees while increasing Canberra’s urban tree canopy to 30% Changing laws to protect the trees we have and ensuring all new developments establish and care for extensive urban green spaces Better protection of mature trees with habitat hollows Improved management of our urban open spaces to support more bugs, birds and reptiles Check out the plan https://greens.org.au/act/neighbourhood-forests #BetterNormal

06.01.2022 The RiotACT's latest poll shows the will of the community very strongly. Over 80% of Canberrans* think roadside signs on public land are infuriating rubbish. The Greens have taken a stand this election and said we won’t use them.... Instead, we rely on our supporters to host yard signs on their own property, and for the community to find our information online greens.org.au/act/better-normal Because we believe in working with the community to Build a #BetterNormal *As of 7am 30 September 2020. 05.01.2022 Here's a radical idea: Let's pay artists for their work. #BetterNormal

05.01.2022 Since July four Canberra schools have been discovered to have high levels of lead contamination. That’s why the Greens will enshrine the ‘right to a healthy environment’ into our Human Rights Act - to protect both Canberrans and our natural environment from unnecessary harm. Like the current right to education, an overarching legal right to a healthy environment simply places a responsibility on government services to consider these rights at every decision point.... This would help prevent this type of contamination in the first place, require prioritised rectification, and potentially offer legal remedies to people affected. Read more about it greens.org.au//lead-and-asbestos-found-more-schools-greens

05.01.2022 We will build a world-class walking and cycling network, kickstarting a cycling revolution in Canberra and creating a walkable city. This includes a commitment to: Building seven large-scale cycling corridors ... Over 100 small upgrades to connect the gaps in our existing walking and cycling network, based on extensive community feedback Allocating a minimum 20% of the roads and parking capital upgrade budget to walking and cycling infrastructure (with a minimum $20 million per year) Quality end-of-trip facilities and world-best infrastructure design standards Read all about our plans to get your wheels turning, and your feet stepping, at greens.org.au/act/walking-and-cycling #BetterNormal

03.01.2022 Attention Canberra businesses: our ACT Greens election initiatives will really get you electrified! Our recently announced electric vehicle initiative includes a $10M fund for grants to Canberra businesses to help you purchase electric vans, electric utes or other electric commercial vehicles. These grants can also assist to install charging infrastructure. Electric vans are already in Australia, and electric utes are coming fast. They’re quieter, cheaper to run, and ...of course, they create zero emissions when charged using the ACT 100% renewable electricity. By reducing the upfront costs, businesses can then enjoy the cheaper operating costs over the long term. And at the same time, it helps Canberra transition away from one of our biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions - petrol vehicles. Win-Win! Check out the package greens.org.au/act/EV #BetterNormal

02.01.2022 The Greens love light rail - modern public transport, powered by renewables, that will help shape Canberra into a world-class sustainable city. We’re again making clear our vision for the next stage of light rail south to Woden. A Canberra light rail network has been a long term project for the Greens, and it is only due to our advocacy and efforts that stage 1 for Canberra was finally secured - and it is already a great success. ... Woden is next. With light rail comes high quality sustainable transport and the urban revitalisation that Woden needs. While the Liberals and other parties don’t support light rail, or equivocate. The Greens are clear - we don’t want a light rail network that’s just for the northside! Crossing the lake and reaching Woden also allows us to extend light rail to Tuggeranong, and to Molonglo. Over time we will have a city-wide network. We have a long term commitment to delivering a comprehensive Light Rail network across Canberra, over stages, in years to come - including Stage 3 to Belconnen. Check out our history of support for light rail in Canberra at greens.org.au//canberra-liberals-light-rail-backflip-under #BetterNormal

02.01.2022 Strike one. The Federal Government has given heritage approval to the $500 million expansion of the Australian War Memorial, leaving just two more approval processes in the way of this excessive and unnecessary project. A war memorial has heritage at its heart honouring veterans and commemorating the people who gave their lives. When heritage experts including the Government’s own Australian Heritage Council don’t support planned changes, the decision-makers should listen.... Telling the stories of our people and our nation is so important, we need all our national institutions resourced well enough to do it. The Greens stand by our years-long call to share this half a billion dollars across all the cultural institutions that enrich our understanding of who we are as a nation.
