23.01.2022 FEEL GOOD FRIDAY! Check out this heart-warming story Sharael Kolberg from Laguna Beach, California, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and finished her therapies and surgery in December 2019. For her 50th birthday in August 2020, she planned to run 50 miles (80km) in 50 days, running 1 mile in each US state. COVID soon put a stop to that, but Sharael is still managing to do it, virtually!... Motivational power is strong in many individuals, but when we all come together for a good cause, that strength can only increase. What a great story :) Have a great weekend Active Seniors

19.01.2022 We often instruct you in a hip extension movement - where your leg moves behind your body. This movement is essential to walking! However, as with most of our bodys movements, we need to remember that the leg is not moving alone - other muscle groups are helping too! How is the core involved? Suzy has a great tip for us! Want more FREE exercise tips? Go to https://www.activeseniors.net.au/free-exercise-tips/ PLEASE NOTE: These exercises are not appropriate for everyone. If you experience pain, please stop the movement and consult with an accredited exercise physiologist.

17.01.2022 Lets face it, there are definitely days where the idea of exercising makes us groan (winter when the sun sets at 4.30pm anyone...?). We just want to dive right into it, often so we can get it out of the way. BUT it is very important to not skip the warm-up or cool-down components of your exercise routine! Why warm up? Dilate the blood vessels and get oxygenated blood to the muscles Get the heart warmed up so once you start your workout there is less sudden stress... Why cool down? Stretch to reduce lactic acid build-up and therefore cramps/stiffness Bring down the heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure

17.01.2022 What first comes to mind when you hear the phrase 'exercise to lose weight'? A lot of the time people associate weight-loss with aerobic (cardio) training, such as walking or riding a bike. While these methods are certainly effective, have you considered picking up some weights and getting your muscles moving? Compound exercises use a lot of muscles in your body to perform an movement. Suzy will show us how! ... Read more about how to establish your 2021 training goals: https://www.activeseniors.net.au/new-year-new-you/

15.01.2022 "A problem shared is a problem halved" What a fantastic sentiment to get us started on our first focus of Movember - men and mental health. Movember shines a spotlight on men's health issues, namely mental health, prostate and testicular cancer. Throughout this pandemic, mental health has taken a hit all round. Consider how it has affected the men in our lives, who are less likely to go seek medical help than women. What can we do to help? ... Whilst mental health is rarely dealt with by a few easier-said-than-done suggestions, just allowing the men around us to understand there is support when needed can be the necessary catalyst required. The article also suggests the role of exercise - rather than a sweaty gym session, it focuses more on establishing a routine for perhaps a walk, swim or surf session with a good friend. We love to socialise AND exercise at Active Seniors, so we are behind this 100%! Read more of our articles about men's health here: https://www.activeseniors.net.au/category/menshealth/

14.01.2022 Blue September draws the spotlight to mens cancers for the month of September. Lets talk about prostate cancer. It is the most common cancer diagnosed for men in Australia and a huge percentage of men over 65 years are diagnosed. There are many treatment options; one is Androgen Deprivation Therapy. The side effects of this are common with any kind of hormone deprivation therapy - loss of muscle mass, weight gain, fatigue ,neuropathy and reduced balance as a result. How can exercise help? We know exercise may be the last thing on a persons mind after a cancer diagnosis. It is important to maintain your strength and fitness before, during and after therapy. Remember, you may need to modify the intensity of exercise to better match how you feel.

14.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day . Across our centres, we will stop for 1 minute at 11am to remember those who have sacrificed their lives in past and ongoing conflicts, as well as those who continue to be engaged in conflict today. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."

14.01.2022 Today is World COPD Awareness Day. COPD is a type of obstructive lung disease which reduces air flow and is characterised by breathing problems. Who would have thought singing could be beneficial to lung health?! Have a go! The best bit about singing is it does not feel like exercise, and it is something that can be done in a (socially distanced) group or when you're alone too. Song is one of the few things we have that unites the world; which is a wonderful positive in today's world. Remember, with COVID-19 around, please wear a mask or sing at a very safe distance from others (shower concerts anyone?).

10.01.2022 Its Daffodil Day! 150,000 Aussies are diagnosed with cancer each year. Thankfully, there have been huge leaps and bounds in research targeting prevention, treatment and management. In great news for us, exercise has been recognised as safe and effective - it helps with the effectiveness of chemotherapy, loss of function from drug treatments and recovery from surgery. The American College of Sports Medicine released a joint statement in 2019 giving specific guidelines for ca...ncer and exercise - aerobic exercise 3 times a week, with 2 strength sessions per week. We hope this means more and more health practitioners recognise the power of Exercise is Medicine when it comes to cancer!

05.01.2022 Over 2.5 million Australians have asthma - a tightening of the lungs which makes it difficult to breathe. Exercise might be the last thing on an asthma-sufferers mind, but it is important to maintain healthy lung function as well as reduce other co-morbidities brought on by certain lifestyle choices.
