25.01.2022 Work-related expenses According to the ATO we claim around $18 billion of work-related expenses each year. The most commonly claimed deductions include car, travel, uniform and self-education expenses. Keep in mind that in order to claim a work-related expense: You must have paid the cost during the financial year. Paying the invoice on 1 July instead of 30 June means waiting an extra 12 months to claim the deduction!... If the expense was reimbursed by your employer, you cant claim it as a deduction. Receiving an allowance from your employer doesnt automatically entitle you to claim a deduction! If your work-related expenses are more than $300, youll need to keep receipts. Also keep in mind that different occupations can claim different deductions. Depending on your job description, you may be able to claim for moisturiser, first aid courses, sunhats, Pay TV access, fitness expenses or handcuffs. The ATO website has some terrific information on what deductions are available for specific industries. See more

15.01.2022 What is Single Touch Payroll? Single Touch Payroll (STP) is a federal government initiative that aims to streamline business reporting obligations. It starts from 1 July 2019 for employers with 19 or less employees. Businesses with 20 or more employees were required to be STP compliant from July 2018. STP involves employers (or their registered agent or intermediary) reporting payments such as salaries and wages, PAYG withholding and super information directly to the ATO from their payroll system. This must be reported after every pay run has been finalised but no later than the employees payment date. Before you can proceed with reporting STP events, you will need to register your company details and software ID with the ATO.

14.01.2022 Income tax cuts 2019 The governments tax cut package passed parliament on Thursday evening (04/07/2019) after weeks of political wrangling. If you earned:... **Under $37,000 you will get $255 back($55 better off, from $200 to $255). **$37,000 to $48,000 $255 back plus 7.5% of what is over $37,000 (so thats between $255 and $1,080). **$48,000 to $90,000 $1,080 back, flat. No calculations needed. **$90,000 to $126,000 $1,080 back but minus 3% of what is over $90,000 (so between $1,080 and $0). **Over $126,000 zero. If the law hadnt passed, you still would have received: $200 back if you earned below $37,000 $200 back, plus 3% of everything over $37,000 if you were between $37,000 and $48,000 $530 back (flat) if you earned between $48,000 and $90,000 $530 back, minus 1.5% of everything over $90,000 if you earn over $90,000 What if I already submitted my tax return? The ATO promises: If these proposed changes become law, and you have received your income tax assessment we will automatically amend your assessment for you if your offset increases. You wont have to do anything."

11.01.2022 There are a few reasons why Australians might not lodge even if they are due a refund. Some might not lodge because they dont realise they need to maybe they are on a low income or havent worked recently. Others might be worried about lodging because they havent lodged for several years, which often causes them stress and anxiety. We know some people put off lodging because they think theyll owe money, but for self-preparers the payment is due on 21 November whether or not a return is lodged.

05.01.2022 While most taxpayers received a tax refund this year, around one million taxpayers will need to make a payment to the ATO. With the 21 November due date just around the corner, the ATO wants Australians to be on high alert for tax scams, especially the increasing trend of scammers demanding payment through Bitcoin ATMs. Top five scammer signs Scammers are often aggressive or abusive... They will often threaten you with immediate arrest They request payment via unusual methods such as iTunes gift cards or other prepaid cards They request personal security information such as your tax file number (TFN) or bank details via email or SMS or social media sites They ask for money in order to process a refund or other payment.
