24.01.2022 WHAT IS A PANIC ATTACK??? A panic attack is a response to a stressful situation, where you feel like you are losing control. If you have a panic attack, you mig...ht have a racing heart and be flushed with pain in your chest. You might feel sweaty, shaky, dizzy, faint and breathless. It can take time to work out whether you are having a panic attack or a heart problem. If you are in any doubt, and you have pain in your chest, then call triple zero (000) immediately and ask for an ambulance. If calling triple zero (000) does not work on your mobile phone, try calling 112. What are the symptoms of a panic attack? Panic attack symptoms can strike at any time. They come on very rapidly and usually peak within a few minutes. Symptoms often include: sweating trembling or shaking increased heart rate chest pain shortness of breath feeling like you’re choking nausea or pain in the stomach dizziness, feeling lightheaded or faint numbness or tingling depersonalisation (feeling detached from yourself or your surroundings) hot or cold flushes fear of dying fear of losing control, or that you’re going crazy sense of impending doom or danger What causes a panic attack? Panic attacks are very common, with up to 5 in every 100 Australians experiencing a panic attack at some stage in their life. During a panic episode, someone is overwhelmed and disabled by the physical symptoms listed above. The panic reaches its peak after about 10 minutes and can take up to half an hour to subside. A panic episode leaves the person feeling temporarily exhausted and drained. Having a panic attack doesn’t necessarily mean you have panic disorder. Panic disorder is when you have repeated panic attacks that severely disrupt your life. During a panic attack: Avoid ‘self-talk’ that focuses your attention on your symptoms don’t tell yourself to ‘stop panicking!’ Reassure yourself that the symptoms of a panic attack are uncomfortable but not life threatening. Focus your attention on something outside your own body and symptoms. For example, try to recall the words to your favourite song or concentrate on the sights and sounds around you. Fleeing from the situation will confirm your fear that your panic symptoms are unbearable. Try to sit and allow the symptoms to pass and get confidence in your ability to cope. 08.01.2022 Clinically diagnosed anxiety is not just being a bit worried, you can't just "chill out a bit" or "get over it". It eats into your well being, your confidence, ...your health and your life and it is 24/7. When someone cancels, or ducks out, or makes a pathetic excuse please understand that it isn't personal, it isn't laziness, it isn't being rude. It's because they can't physically do it. When someone needs supporting/encouraging/ hand holding it isn't pathetic, it isn't attention seeking, it isn't childish - it's because they are desperate to beat it but can't do it alone. Anxiety is awful, being isolated and believing your friends don't care sucks even more How many of you have had a night out planned, or arranged coffee or a beer with friends and suddenly the 4 walls you inhabit seem the only safe haven because it's the only place you don't have to pretend you are ok, so you cancel. Or when you are invited out you tell them how terribly sorry you are, but you're already booked up that weekend, when you are actually just really busy holding it together in your safe box. So the first problem starts, all by itself. People stop asking you and the isolation that at first wasn't true becomes your only truth. Please don't give up on your friends. Ring them if they don't reply to a message. They really do want to talk, they just don't know how to say it some days. And in work every passing comment is a negative, you constantly do more to get over the feeling you are not good enough. The exhaustion from not sleeping because you panic all night over what you cannot influence means you make mistakes, you live in a fog and it is a vicious circle. I'm asking for just 5 friends who will take the time to put this on their wall to help raise awareness of and for those who have mental health difficulties. Mental Health Awareness See more

02.01.2022 Many people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts communicate distress through their words or actions, but these warning signs may be missed or misinterpreted.... By building a network of appropriately trained gatekeepers in our community we can strengthen our local safety net. In the context of suicide prevention, gatekeepers are in a unique position to identify people who are experiencing suicide ideation or crisis, recognising warning signs and if properly equipped can appropriately and safely respond to and support someone experiencing a suicidal crisis.
01.01.2022 WE CANNOT SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME THINKING WE USED WHEN WE CREATED THEM. ALBERT EINSTEIN.
