23.01.2022 ARTHRITIS is painful inflammation of joints that cause pain, stiffness and reduced mobility in those who suffer from it. It can affect any joint in the body and is often worse in the cold. In Chinese Medicine, arthritis arises when qi and blood cannot flow freely through energy pathways or meridians. Old injuries (accompanied by scar tissue) are particularly prone to arthritis and pain. Acupuncture and Tui Na therapy can help by restoring healthy qi and blood flow to the ...area, allowing the body to remove cellular debris (caused by inflammation or scar tissue) and restoring a heathy blood flow in order to return the joint to its healthy state and reduce pain. If these chilly mornings are aggravating your arthritis give me a call and see what we can do to reduce your pain and help you move around freely! 21.01.2022 *Spoiler ** this post recommends mulled wine and chai tea through winter! As winter approaches and days get shorter, nights get longer and it gets colder we need to adjust our diets to assist our bodies in staying warm. In Chinese Medicine- external cold is a cause of disease! Symptoms of cold are: freezing/ shivering, aching of old injuries, cold extremities, joint pain, muscle pain and abdominal pain that improves with warmth. The way to fix this is to disperse cold and... warm the body by increasing consumption of warming (thermogenic) foods such as: alcohol (in moderation), black pepper, cinnamon, chicken, chilli, cloves, coriander, garlic, ginger, green onion, fennel, lamb and onion. (Above information sourced from: Chinese Nutrition Therapy by Joerg Kastner, 2009) Therefore, I recommend adding to your diet: Chai Tea with honey, anything from a slow cooker (especially with lamb or chicken) and mulled wine in moderation. For more diet advice or yummy recipes come see me at Kingston Beach Health Centre on Mondays Stay warm! https://www.kbhc.com.au/make-a-booking

15.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW!? That the roots of acupuncture originated before the written word? This means that Acupuncture has a strategy to treat almost every ailment under the sun! From nightmares, to parasites. Muscular aches and pains to anxiety. Fertility and pain management during birth to digestive disorders! Allergies such as Hayfever, headaches and nausea. And much more such as insomnia, vision & hearing disorders, mental health, general energy & wellbeing, immune support and many... more! Now, although Chinese medicine has treatments options for the above, I have a duty of care to you and some of these more serious things are better off treated first with western medicine (eg. parasites or ear infections). However I will more than happily help you manage these conditions after a visit to your GP :)

14.01.2022 STAGNATION- is a word that gets used a lot in the Chinese Medicine world. It is a blanket term for when blood or energy isnt flowing properly. Patients with any type of stagnation are usually complaining of some sort of pain. Stagnation can be substantial and palpable- for example scar tissue is a form of stagnation; or it can be energetic and insubstantial- like qi stagnation causing emotional outbreaks or painful periods in women. Qi and blood should flow freely around ...our body, delivering energy and nutrients and removing waste products and cellular debris. Stagnation interrupts this flow and causes undesirable effects in the body part/ organ affected. Chinese Medicine looks to determine both the location and cause of stagnation (be it physical scar tissue or an emotional stagnation) using ancient diagnostic techniques like tongue and pulse analysis in order to create an individualised treatment for each individual case. A 2018 randomised control trial done on 111 people revealed that those in the intervention group showed significant improvements in stagnation depression, physical distress and everyday functioning furthermore in a two month follow up test of salivary cortisol levels (a biological stress marker in the saliva) the intervention group showed small reductions in cortisol levels compared to the control group which showed no change. A Breif Body- Mind- Spirit Group Therapy for Chinese Medicine Stagnaion Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial: Ng, Leng, Ho, Zhang & Wang, 2018. Article found at: https://www.hindawi.com/journals/ecam/2018/8153637/ could you be functioning better? Or have less pain? give me a call and see what individualised treatment I can give you! 13.01.2022 Have you recently experienced tightness or muscle spasms in your neck? If youre interested in connecting a few (apparently unrelated) symptoms and relieving them in an easy acupuncture treatment this post is for you! Western Medicine calls it: Wry neck or Torticollis. Which is an unpredictable condition where the neck muscles contract and spasm, causing pain and reduced ability to turn the head. Treatment from a physiotherapist involves an assessment of the exact locatio...n of muscle/ joint dysfunction before soft tissue massage and joint treatment (https://physioworks.com.au/injuries-conditio/acute-wry-neck) Chinese Medicine calls it: Wind-cold invasion. The muscles in the upper body (neck and shoulders) have been exposed to cold and seized up- possibly exacerbated by wind the spear head of a thousand diseases. A stiff neck and occipital headache are commonly seen together in cases of wind-cold. Other symptoms the patient may not realise are related are: chills, sensitivity to wind, lack of thirst, cough, lack of sweating, other body aches or a runny nose with clear discharge (Essentials of Chinese Medicine: Internal Medicine, Anshen Shi, 2005). Chinese Medicine treatment of this is to: dispel cold and warm the channels using acupuncture and the burning of moxa to warm the area. Depending on your individual case certain foods may be recommended to reduce your predisposition to getting these symptoms again, especially with winter fast approaching! 06.01.2022 Some simple Chinese Medicine diet and lifestyle advice on how to stay warm and avoid being uncomfortably cold or getting sick this Autumn and Winter In Chinese Medicine Autumn is the time of harvest as we prepare ourselves for winter- which is the time of storage. Energies in our bodies and environment move inwards in preparation for the slowing down of all things through winter. In the same way that deciduous trees lose their leaves to focus on keeping the core of a tr...ee alive, our bodies energies go inward to keep our internal organs warm and healthy. Autumn is often a dry and cold time and we often find we have dry skin, cold extremities and a craving for warmth. Be that sipping a warm cuppa or sitting by a fire, our body knows what it wants! Autumn is a time to focus on ensuring your blood and immune energy doesnt slow down too. Keeping these things active and warm and circulating at the peripheries of your body will help you avoid getting cold or sick (see post that recommends mulled wine and chai ). Avoiding cooling foods is just as important as including warming foods as its difficult for your body to stay warm when its being exposed to internal cold: such as icy water or foods straight from the fridge. Think about how cold you get after drinking a slushie Or how much you crave slushies in the Summer to cool yourself down! Cold foods can solidify fats in your stomach, making your body work harder to warm up the contents of your stomach. Which makes it harder to digest and absorb the nutrients in your food. Book an appointment with me at Kingston Beach Health Centre for more specific and individual advice. Stay warm friends https://www.kbhc.com.au/make-a-booking
