25.01.2022 Cardinal George Pell is set to return to Rome on Tuesday at the Vatican’s invitation. It is believed the invitation emanates from Pope Francis.

25.01.2022 The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith's document on end of life issues is very timely given moves in several states of Australia to allow state-sanctio...ned killing of the sick and elderly. The practice of euthanasia corrupts palliative care, affects the very way we think of the sick and of healthcare, and damages our sense of social responsibility toward the vulnerable. The example of the Good Samaritan shows us there are always better ways to love and care for people when they are very sick or towards the end of their lives.

25.01.2022 "Despite his fierce Catholicism and detestation of Cromwell, Belloc did his best to see his good points and his bad points."

24.01.2022 "In writing 'Daniel Rudd: Calling a Church to Justice', Agee has made known to modern readers the great contribution Rudd made to the cause of justice for African Americans towards the end of the 19th century, as to the Catholic Church."

24.01.2022 University students with permission to speak on the humanity of the unborn child at their Sydney campus were instead forced to defend their allocated area and their own safety against pro-choice protesters.

23.01.2022 An essential characteristic of a Catholic education is growing in understanding of what it is to being fully human, argue Martin Tobin and Monique Hall.

22.01.2022 The question is an anthropological one, Archbishop Comensoli told The Pillar about a new Victorian law. This is about the basics of our humanity and the living well of it, and allowing of the flourishing of the human person, these are the key questions.

22.01.2022 For Sr John Mary, making her final vows last month was followed by feeling a deep love for working in Christ’s Kingdom, and for His children. It’s almost this ...wanting to give myself totally without cost. This desire to just imitate Him on the cross, where he just totally gave himself for man, for His Kingdom, so that everyone can enjoy that life with God. Sr John Mary Alimangohan SI, 26, made her final profession as a Sister of the Immaculata on the vigil of the Assumption, August 14 at St Mary of the Cross Church in Ranelagh. She says religious life is such a privileged gift. It’s fulfilling because it's always what I've desired; that intimacy with Christ, being really close to him. To young people thinking about stepping out to discern a religious vocation, her advice is: You lose nothing. You gain everything, she said. It was hard but I chose to give up family, marriage, possessions life in the world for something greater it’s just like someone buying a treasure. Read the full article below.

21.01.2022 We encourage everyone to write to their local members of parliament to voice their concerns for the persistent lack of parity for people of faith during the current Victorian state-wide coronavirus restrictions.

21.01.2022 "What’s different about this document is that it also offers a perceptive bioethical analysis of euthanasia, along with theological prescriptions."

21.01.2022 Archbishop Julian has written a Pastoral Letter entitled 'Honouring the Lord's Day'. Copies available from your parish this weekend, or you can read it online:

19.01.2022 'Christians in China are protesting against a textbook making Jesus a sinner and a killer. Actually, however, the incident is subtler than that. It is not, or n...ot mostly, about painting a negative image of Jesus. It is about the CCP itself. Many CCP bureaucrats, judges, and police officers are notoriously corrupted. Yet, the story teaches that they should be obeyed. If sinners would be prevented from executing the law, including administering the capital punishment with or without due process, the law would be dead.' See more

19.01.2022 "... the West has, in the immortal words of Queen Elsa in Frozen, let it go. It’s externalized what it once internalized. It has outsourced responsibility. It’s reduced ethics to economics and politics. Which means we are dependent on the market and the state, forces we can do little to control."

18.01.2022 It has been a great strength of the Church in Australia to have the Melkites, Maronites, and others from Lebanon and nations in the Middle East. We love having you all here, said Archbishop Fisher.

16.01.2022 Very excited to announce our Special Guest Speaker, Cardinal George Pell AC for this year's Annual Conference - held virtually for the first time. The Cardinal... will be speaking on 'A Changed Church in a Changing Society: Are resets possible?' With his virtual session released on Friday 26 February 2021, we recommend booking your access now: https://ncc.org.au/.../single-session-a-changed-church.../ --- **ABOUT CARDINAL PELL** Cardinal Pell served as the inaugural prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy between 2014 and 2019, and was a member of the Council of Cardinal Advisers between 2013 and 2018. Ordained a priest in 1966 and bishop in 1987, he was made a cardinal in 2003. He served as the eighth Archbishop of Sydney (20012014), the seventh Archbishop of Melbourne (19962001) and an auxiliary bishop of Melbourne (19871996). He has also been an author, columnist and public speaker. Since 1996, he has maintained a high public profile on a wide range of issues, while retaining an adherence to Catholic orthodoxy. He was appointed as a delegate to the Australian Constitutional Convention in 1998, received the Centenary Medal from the Australian government in 2003 and was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2005. During his tenure as Archbishop of Melbourne, Pell set up the "Melbourne Response" protocol in 1996 to investigate and deal with complaints of child sexual abuse in the archdiocese. The protocol was the first of its kind in the world. In 2020, the High Court of Australia overturned the County Court of Victoria's 2018 conviction of Pell on charges of sexual offences and set aside the orders of the Victorian Court of Appeal rejecting appeal.

15.01.2022 Cardinal George Pell, former prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, has made no secret of his support for deep financial reforms at the Vatican, and he iss...ued a surprising congratulatory note for the way the pope dealt with Cardinal Becciu. The Holy Father was elected to clean up Vatican finances. He plays a long game and is to be thanked and congratulated on recent developments, the Australian cardinal said Sept. 25.

15.01.2022 One of our mission team members has organised a fundraiser as the Sisters are running out of room in our convent - we use a hallway as a dining room, a lounge r...oom as a chapel and have three bedrooms between nine Sisters. We are so grateful for our convent but we are overflowing, especially as we often have many young people with us for meals and times of prayer. We really need your help and your prayers. Thank you and God bless! See more

14.01.2022 The Mt Isa-born pianist and former music teacher is a Benedictine priest in Australia’s only monastic town, New Norcia, Western Australia. Being at the monast...ery has given me a new dimension to my work as a composer, Fr Robert Nixon said. It’s allowed me to work out of the space of contemplation and reflection more deeply, and to write music which in a way is directed purely towards God and the service of God rather than towards achieving projects within a certain timeframe. More information on Fr Nixon's recital can be found within.

14.01.2022 'On the eve of renewing the "secret" agreement between China and the Vatican, Cardinal Joseph Zen, Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong, spent four days in Rome in the hope of meeting Pope Francis to update him on the situation in Hong Kong and the Catholic Church in China. Zen, did not receive a response from the Holy Father. "I can't even make a fair judgement about the agreement, Zen said, because even I don't know what it says. This is incredible. I am a Chinese Cardinal and I am not allowed to know what the Holy See has decided for the Chinese Church."'

13.01.2022 "We definitely go astray if we think of material progress as true progress... Communication and the pace of life, even with rather innocuous technologies, has really had the effect of distracting us from even thinking about eternal things." Full course: https://t.co/VpMzflQ223

12.01.2022 Want to go to Mass? Maximum congregation: 10 people. Want to go to the pub or a restaurant? It's 20 or 50 - depending. Victoria's clerical Catholic leaders have challenged Premier Daniel Andrews over different standards of treatment for church gatherings and pubs.

10.01.2022 Friends, It is pleasing to see the NSW Government finally commit to implementing new laws to protect the victims of modern slavery, including forced marriage an...d human trafficking. The state government has announced it will begin discussions with the Commonwealth government to achieve greater harmonisation with the Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act. This will ideally mean that entities with over $50 million in annual consolidated revenue will be required to produce public statements detailing how they are keeping their supply chains slavery-free. I am grateful to the more than ten thousand people who petitioned the government over recent months, calling for an end to stalling tactics that were delaying the enactment of laws passed by parliament over two years ago. In the Archdiocese of Sydney, I am especially grateful to the members of the Anti-Slavery Taskforce who have shown great leadership on this issue: John McCarthy; Alison Rahill and Jenny Stanger. Our community cannot be indifferent to modern slavery and human trafficking, or our responsibility to eradicate it. Like the Good Samaritan, we must reach out with a supportive hand to those in greatest need. I look forward to these laws coming into effect, and urge the government to ensure this happens before the end of this year.

10.01.2022 Dear Viewers, After 49 1/2 years of broadcasting Mass For You At Home to the people of Australia, it seems that we may no longer be able to broadcast past Janu...ary 2021. Recently, the Archbishop of Melbourne has indicated that he is reconsidering the funding of the program and is considering, instead, a broadcast of Masses from St Patrick's Cathedral on Channel 31. This is a local channel which only broadcasts to some parts of Melbourne. This will mean that televised Mass will no long be available to the nursing homes, hospitals, jails and homes of the elderly, frail, ill or isolated after next January. Other sponsors are still willing to contribute to this vital service of the Australian Church. We would greatly appreciate you emailing the Archbishop to let him know of your experience of Mass For You At Home over the years. We get letters, emails and Facebook posts from you, our viewers, week after week but it is often the case that the Archbishop only receives the few complaints we have. Please do not be impolite in your emails but rather let the Archbishop know how much this program is appreciated around Australia. We still hold hope that he may revise his consideration as this is likely to cause quite a lot of damage among the faithful Catholics of Australia who have come to rely even more heavily on MFYAH since COVID restrictions have come in to place. Once those restrictions have finished we will find that most parishes who are live streaming masses now will go back to normal parish life. Please email: [email protected] and address your thoughts to Your Excellency Archbishop Peter Comensoli or write to PO Box 146 East Melbourne VIC 8002 You may also wish to contact your local bishop to voice your concern about this potential loss of a great Catholic voice in Australia. Please pass this on to other viewers, your parish or local priest so that they may have the opportunity to voice their concerns.

08.01.2022 "Henrich’s profound historical analysis indicates that we ought to thank the Catholic Church for this remarkable transformation. By the early Middle Ages, the Church was imposing severe restrictions on cousin marriage, which ultimately, led to the weakening of kinship ties in Western Europe."

08.01.2022 One of Sydney's powerhouses of prayer and place of retreat for world-weary guests will move to quieter pastures following the Tyburn Nuns' sale of their Riverstone monastery. https://www.catholicweekly.com.au/home-where-the-heart-is-/

08.01.2022 Friends, tomorrow marks the 1st anniversary of the passing of the Abortion Law Reform Act 2019, which may be the worst law passed in NSW in modern times. Abort...ion on demand right upto birth has now been formally legalised in our state, but our commitment to life must continue, so that strong support is available to distressed pregnant women with any support or alternatives to abortion. I encourage you to support the Life Choice #notforgotten campaign on social media so that we can remind the broader public and our political leaders of the importance of protecting life so that every vulnerable woman and baby is supported and abortion becomes unthinkable. You’ll find more information about the campaign here: www.LifeChoice.org.au/notforgotten

06.01.2022 One hundred and eighty young people and families began the new year by looking to the future their eternal future at the five-day Immaculata Mission School in Cygnet.

02.01.2022 A new letter released by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith overnight reaffirm's the Church's teachings on euthanasia, including that the sacraments cannot be administered to patients who expressly ask for euthanasia or assisted suicide.

01.01.2022 "The philosophy underlying the secular arguments deployed in Samaritanus Bonus is completely different. Instead of departing from the autonomy of the patient, it emphasises the universal experience of vulnerability."

01.01.2022 Among the many involved in #notforgotten day was Rachel Vala a young Catholic from the Diocese of Broken Bay who put her artistic talent to use in a song uplo...aded to social media titled Not Forgotten. The song echoes every person’s point of view; young people trying to protect the dignity of life, families, and women who have had abortions as well as women in vulnerable positions, Ms Vala told The Catholic Weekly.
