This male was certainly a poser. I'm not usually one for bird-on-a-stick type shots, but for this little beauty I'll make an exception.
20.01.2022 Pacific Black Duck Anas superciliosa June 28th, 2020 Lysterfield, Victoria, Australia... Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender Fascinating to watch this Duck having a very vigorous bath - including several 'duck rolls' where it would full rotate in the water and flip upside down!
20.01.2022 Campbell Albatross Thalassarche impavida Vulnerable in Australia June 15th, 2019... Port Fairy pelagic, Victoria, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens Unfortunately didn't get an opportunity to get out on the sea in 2020 (most of us didn't get much of an opportunity to do much at all!). Looking forward to getting a way for a few days soon. This shot is from last year, a Campbell Albatross waiting for a free feed. Such amazing eyes & eye shadow!

This Coot was happy to oblige as it swallowed a piece of reed.

18.01.2022 Happy New Year 2021! Thank you to each & every one of you for all of your support over a very challenging 2020, a year that I'm sure many people will be happy to see in the rearview mirror. What a year it has been I hope sharing some of my images has at least brought some colour to your newsfeed & a reminder that despite all of our challenges this year, there is still beauty in this crazy world.... Here's hoping 2021 brings us all more opportunities to take time out from our hectic lifestyles; to pause & reflect on the beauty that is our natural world. So let's shake off 2020 and look forward to the possibilities that 2021 may bring! Except Covid 2.0, lets not contemplate that And don't forget to put up your new calendar! Thanks, Adam

Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender One of my favourite images from my recent NT trip - the beautifully coloured Forest Kingfisher. This beauty was hunting larger insects in the dry field, using these large, dead grass stems as a perch. I really wanted an image that showed off those amazing iridescent blue feathers, so I was stoked when this bird landed close by.

13.01.2022 Great Bowerbird (male) Chlamydera nuchalis September 19th, 2019 Lake Argyle, Western Australia, Australia... Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender Canon 600EX II-RT flash with extender The Great Bowerbird are a relatively common bird in the North of Australia. The largest of the bowerbirds, the males spend the majority of their life building, maintaining, improving, defending & above all displaying from their bowers in order to attract a mate. The bowers are around one metre long & approx. 45cms wide, usually built under a shrub or leafy branch. Great Bowerbirds have the most elaborate collection of trinkets of the bowerbirds, with both entrances decorated with collections of white & green objects, including stones, bones, shells & leaves, as well as numerous small man-made objects such as screws, bottle caps & other plastic items. Additionally, the centre of the bower is decorated with clear glass pieces. This male was busily ensuring that every trinket & every stick was perfectly in place.

13.01.2022 Well it's that time again.. time to present my annual Top 20ish Photographs for the year gone-by! And what a year 2020 has been. Understatement! My apologies upfront for the wall of text! In Australia, we battled some of the worst bushfires on record throughout the Summer, right across the country. Billions of our native wildlife perished with millions of hectares of bush burnt. In my home state of Victoria, most of Far East Gippsland was devastated by fire....Continue reading
11.01.2022 Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii September 27th, 2019 Lee Point, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia... Note the nictitating membrane across the eye - this is a translucent third eyelid that provides protection for they eye while allowing the bird to maintain vision.

10.01.2022 Black-faced Woodswallow Artamus cinereus November 5th, 2019 Lake Tyrrell, Sea Lake, Victoria, Australia... Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender Loved spending time with these Woodswallows in the early morning light. The shallow water of the lake & dirt hills made for wonderful background colours. The weathered, dead trees that were dotted around the lake were a favourite with this species as they were the only feature of the landscape that offered any real aerial vantage points.
10.01.2022 Long-billed Corella Cacatua tenuirostris November 13th, 2020 Lysterfield, Victoria, Australia... Canon EOS R5 Canon EF 600mm f4L IS III USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender After a series of lockdowns for the better part of 8 months, it was nice to finally get out for the day, spend some time at one of my favourite local spots & test out the new gear! Not even the average light could dampen my enthusiasm as I happily shot some of the regulars. I'm really looking forward to testing out some of the new capabilities of the ew camera, my first foray into the world of mirrorless. And while it is a learning curve no doubt, the new features & extra megapixels really open up some new possibilities - even if I didn't have to use them with this cheeky Corella (almost full frame!). The animal eye autofocus really is something else!

Fulica atra May 26th, 2020 Lysterfield, Victoria, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender I really like the colours of this common waterbird; the piercing red eye, bright white bill & forehead shield offset by the lovely dark sooty coloured plumage. This particular image really appealed to me as I love the water colour & gentle ripples.

Canon EOS R5 Canon EF 600mm f4L IS III USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender A male Musk Duck with a very impressive pendulous lobe! Taken on a very overcast day. Another one from the same session with my new gear. I'm really enjoying the switch to mirrorless so far, but it is definitely a learning curve.
08.01.2022 Magpie Goose Anseranas semipalmata September 28th, 2019 East Point, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia... Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender The first cab off the rank! The prehistoric looking Magpie Goose! I get vibes of a mini-Brachiosaurus when I look at this birds long neck & bumpy head! A very common species up North, actually proved quite tough to get a decent pic of though. This bird was one of the locals at a park so was quite tame. These Geese love digging around in the mud - quite evident with this individual!

07.01.2022 Time for something a little different! Please share with me YOUR favourite Australian bird - and post a photo you have taken if you have one! Seeing as I haven't been able to get out much this year to create new images, I'd like YOU to share with me your favourite Australian bird, and if I've photographed it, I'll share an image of it over the coming weeks! I'm sure the hardest part will be picking just one! This is my favourite of all Australian birds - the prehistoric loo...king Southern Cassowary! Such fascinatingly curious birds, with their vibrant skin colours and jet black feathers. These dinosaur-like ground dwellers are restricted to the rainforests of tropical north Queensland. They are Australia's heaviest bird, weighing between 35-85kgs & among our tallest at an intimidating ~1.7m in height. The females of this species are larger & more colourful than the males. Their diet mainly consists of the fruits of rainforest plants, & they will swallow entire fruits & rapidly pass the seeds in large piles of multi-coloured dung. They are the only known dispersers of many large-seeded rainforest plants & play a vital role is rainforest regeneration. Sadly, these beautiful giants are Endangered in Australia. One of the greatest threats to their existence is the continued clearing & fragmentation of the rainforests they inhabit. Only an estimated 20-25% of their natural habitat remains today. This fragmentation leads to Cassowaries having to contend with cars as they cross our roads to move from one patch of rainforest to another, which often leads to their death. With an estimated population of only ~2,000 individuals, every bird matters. Here's hoping we can get our acts together & protect the last remaining habitats of these magnificent & unique birds so we can continue to enjoy their presence for years to come. Southern Cassowary (female) Casuarius casuarius Endangered in Australia
06.01.2022 Grey-headed Robin Heteromyias cinereifrons November 11th, 2018 Danbulla State Forest, Danbulla, Queensland, Australia... Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens Canon 600EX II-RT flash These Robins are actually larger than the various Robin species we get down South. However, like our Robins, they inhabit dense forests. I'd been sitting on this image for a while before processing it, as it was quite underexposed & very noisy. I recently downloaded Topaz DeNoise & this is the first image I wanted to test the new software with - I think it came up pretty well!
06.01.2022 Orange Chat (male) Epthianura aurifrons November 4th, 2019 Lake Tyrrell, Sea Lake, Victoria, Australia... Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender This little Chat was an absolute beauty. I spent a few days targeting this species in Victoria's North last year. Spending some time with these birds, I was able to observe their behaviours. Each evening, just before sunset, this particular male would choose a staging area & proceed to call for several minutes, which I presume was to his mate whom was often in the same area. I was able to set myself up in the general area as the sun began to set & wait patiently for him to fly in & choose his perch. These birds are often very skittish, but during this evening routine, if I was very quiet & kept very low, I was able to get reasonably close without disturbing him.

Cape Paterson, Victoria, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender One of my favourite things about visiting Cape Paterson is there are several pairs of Hooded Plovers along most of the beaches. I particularly like exploring the reefs as they make for such interesting surroundings. This image was taken just prior to sunset.

03.01.2022 Musk Duck (male) Biziura lobata June 9th, 2020 Lysterfield, Victoria, Australia... Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens There are a few male Musk Ducks that reside on Lysterfield Lake, often competing for females. This is the dominant male, who happens to have the largest pendulous lobe. My assumption is he is the eldest of the males. I have often seen him chasing the other males for hundreds of metres across the lake! On this particularly still morning, this male put on quite a show! The male will perform an elaborate courtship routine, which includes a series tail flicks, high pitched short whistles & plenty of splashing! He will raise his head & lobe, arch his tail inwards then use both of his feet to simultaneously kick water into the air. It's quite a spectacle!
