25.01.2022 Are you ready for our fortnightly COVID-19 update? Read on for a taste of what our teams have been up to. We hope you all have a safe and restful weekend In Uganda, we have completed distribution of personal protective equipment to our 100 Hospital to Home village health team (VHT) members. Each received soap, cloth masks, medical masks and education materials. During distribution, the VHTs were taught how to use the masks, including safe donning and doffing. They were al...so given guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Adara on how to safely use masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The cloth masks were made by Kiwoko Hospital tailors, and even have filters inside. Kiwoko Hospital has been continuing their focus on hand hygiene and has installed several additional hand washing facilities outside different wards. The hospital has also procured additional tents for both patient triage and the isolation of suspected cases and alerts. Kiwoko Hospital has so far had 16 alerts. All were negative. All mothers discharged from the Kiwoko neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) will now receive 2 cloth masks upon discharge to protect them at home. Over 240 mothers from NICU have already received masks. In Nepal, Ramesh (Technical Assistant, Humla) was mobilised to raise awareness of COVID-19 in communities through updated posters, local language messages through speakers and door to door visits. He also distributed soaps. Kanjok (Education Manager, Humla) put together COVID-19 awareness messages and positive messages about helping each other and staying strong. With borders closed in the north and markets closed in the south, the people of Humla are suffering from food shortages. With COVID-19 cases spreading rapidly in the country, it is unlikely this will change any time soon. With this situation, there is high chance that the people of Humla will experience a food crisis and hunger. Gagan (Agricultural Coordinator, Humla) began implementation of Adara’s food relief plan. In the plan, we will expand our greenhouse and seed distribution work to four additional villages. Gagan held meetings with farmers in these villages and conducted assessments on the need in each village. We are also excited to share that the Shree Ghyangfedi Secondary School started distance learning recently through learning units. Teachers of Ghyangfedi school have started to visit catchment areas and the newly established learning units to provide assignments, collect homework and provide student support. Each learning unit consists of 6-7 children with one older student who oversees the others. Each teacher has rotation to visit different catchment areas on different days. Cases of COVID-19 have now reached more than 14,000 in Nepal and 800 in Uganda. We know much more still lies ahead but we are proud to be doing our best to prepare the communities we work alongside.

24.01.2022 Meet Sarita! Sarita is one of the students in Ghyangfedi, Nepal who has been learning remotely for the past three months. More than anything, Sarita misses going to school to see her friends and play games. But even though schools are closed, she has been busy focusing on her studies and writing poems Sarita was thrilled to receive this delivery of new school books recently and can’t wait to go through them page by page ... She was also excited to learn that teachers in Ghyangfedi will now start visiting villages to deliver assignments and provide support to students. It may not be quite the same as being able to see all her friends at school each day but is still a great way to get guidance from her teachers. A HUGE thank you to the teachers of Ghyangfedi for starting this wonderful initiative which is helping hundreds of students just like Sarita

23.01.2022 Meet Hirakala who is 15 years old and wants to become a health worker to help her community She attends school in the remote Nepali Himalayas where she’s learning all the vital skills like reading, writing and maths so one day, she will be able to do achieve her dreams. This International Literacy Day, we acknowledge the transformative role literacy plays in ensuring wellbeing, and in lifting communities out of poverty. That’s why at Adara, we work alongside 16 scho...ols in Nepal to ensure access to quality education, so all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential. We have big health issues in our community. There is not a single doctor in our area, and I have seen many of our villagers get very sick. I really want to improve this health situation," Hirakala says.

23.01.2022 In the first 6 months of 2020 we’ve seen 1,241 beautiful bubs enter the world in the Kiwoko Hospital maternity ward. That’s 1,241 babies brought into the world via the skilled hands of Kiwoko Hospital midwives. That’s 1,241 bright futures ahead. Childbirth doesn’t stop in a crisis and neither do we!

22.01.2022 Happy Friday! Are you ready to hear the latest on our COVID-19 response work? Continue reading for an update from our teams on the ground Our Uganda team travelled to Nakaseke Hospital this week to provide staff with education, as well as COVID-19 counselling cards to assist in the education of patients. A total of 13 staff were trained from the different wards including maternity, the special care baby unit, labour suite, postnatal ward, theatre and the hospital adminis...tration Sensitization and training on COVID-19 to all staff and patients is still ongoing. Adara continues to educate and provide the latest evidenced-based COVID-19 information to our teams on the ground. We were relieved to hear that Humla is currently one of five COVID-19 free districts in Nepal, with no active cases. This is reassuring news as cases continue to increase throughout other parts of Nepal. There are now more than 17,000 confirmed cases in Nepal. We have continued to focus on food relief over the past few weeks. Gagan, Adara’s Agricultural Coordinator is delivering training throughout several villages in Humla as part of our food relief plan. We will provide training and education to 493 farmers on topics such as kitchen gardening, local seeds exchange, better utilization of land, promotion of local crops and local food habits. Farmers will also receive training on greenhouse construction and repair, and farming techniques including the use of solar dryers to preserve food. The Adara team have also procured various greenhouse materials and seeds as part of our food relief plan. 493 farmers will receive seeds to plant inside their greenhouses in winter and in the fields in summer. Seeds include swiss chard, parsley, tomato, carrot, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, and mustard greens. In addition, Adara will provide 95 additional farmers with UV plastic sheets, garden pipes, watering cans, seeds and technical support so that they can build their own greenhouses and grow fresh vegetables during the winter season. Some of the Adara team also visited Ghyangfedi this week to distribute cloth masks, radios, stationery, and medicine. Check out the photos for some adorable shots! That’s all from us for now. We will be back with our COVID-19 update in two weeks.

18.01.2022 It’s Friday which means it’s time for our fortnightly COVID-19 update. Read on for a glimpse of what our teams have been up to over the last couple of weeks. As we shared yesterday, Kiwoko Hospital has recorded its first cases of COVID-19. For a full update on the situation you can watch the video message we shared from our Senior Programmes Director yesterday. Our work in Uganda during this period has been focused on supporting Kiwoko as much as we can during this diffi...cult time. This has involved providing protocols and guidance; sourcing additional personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff and cloth masks for vulnerable groups; providing funding for food and staffing for people isolating at the hospital’s designed isolation centre; and educating community health workers and resourcing them with PPE. In Humla, Nepal schools have officially reopened after being disinfected. Students are slowly coming back particularly older children. If there is a second wave or an active case is found in Humla, the government may close schools. Adara’s health coordinator in Humla, Kyamma, completed the second round of COVID-19 health workers’ training with all health workers in the Adara-supported health posts in Humla. She was accompanied by a nurse from the district health office for the training. We have packed a second round of PPE to go to Humla. In this round, the team have included ‘Dignified Menstruation Kits’ for all female health workers. The PPE will be driven to Nepalgunj and then flown to Humla. We expect it to arrive sometime next week. Included in this round of PPE are cloth masks for all school students in Humla, which were made by the Women’s Foundation. Schools in Ghyangfedi remain closed as cases of COVID-19 are getting closer to the area. Because of this, we have also stopped learning units for the time being. In the meantime, students have the home learning kits that were provided by Adara earlier in lockdown. That’s all from us for now. We will be back with our COVID-19 update in two weeks.

18.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! We don’t know about you, but we sure do miss being able to hug our friends. Today the entire Adara family is sending you one big virtual hug Enjoy this throwback to earlier in the year when hugs were in abundance!

17.01.2022 It is with much sadness that we share there has been an outbreak of COVID-19 in our most remote project at Yalbang School in Humla, Nepal. This school, and our partnership with the Himalayan Children Society (HCS), sits at the heart of our work in remote community development, as it has since our beginnings in 1998. We have been preparing for this since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Since March we have been working with HCS to prepare the community to make sure they have all the knowledge and tools to fight this virus and now we have redoubled our efforts. Watch this video with our Senior Programmes Director, Madeline Vaughan, for a full update on the situation.

17.01.2022 Today we sent out a newsletter to our supporters around the world. The message of this newsletter was of gratitude. We have constantly been amazed by the outpouring of love we have received and are grateful for every person who has stood with over the last few months So from everyone at Adara, we say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. 16.01.2022 This is what it looks like when children are pulled out of trafficking and given the opportunity to thrive. More than 15 years ago, we first encountered 136 children living in horrendous conditions in Kathmandu. This group, now affectionately known as the Adara Kids have been a part of our family ever since, as we began helping them to build safe, happy and bright futures. Here they are after re-connection with their families and years of love and support. This work has taught us so much. It has underpinned all our work in child protection more broadly. Every single day, and especially on this World Day Against Human Trafficking, the Adara family vows to do all we can do end human trafficking.

16.01.2022 Hoping to learn more about ethical business, the Sustainable Development Goals and purpose? Tune in to the Global Compact Network Australia's podcast, The Pressures Report, for an enlightening conversation with Adara’s founder, Audette Exel. It's a relevant discussion as we consider the world we want to live in post the health and economic crises our world is now facing. Listen now: https://open.spotify.com/show/1I0L6enMmoiGQ3JQpPbhmG

15.01.2022 As COVID-19 shuttered schools around the world, around 1.5 billion schoolchildren were affected. While many countries enacted remote learning policies, at least 1 in 3 schoolchildren 463 million children worldwide were unable to access remote learning, effectively cutting them off from education. At Adara, we are committed to ensuring no child is left behind. Through our radio education programme and home learning kits, we were able to safeguard the education of children living in some of the world’s remotest places With schools in Humla, Nepal now reopening, we feel reassured to know that the education of thousands of children wasn’t completely disrupted for the lockdown period. Thank you for standing with us to make this possible.

15.01.2022 In many places around the world, going to school looks very different to normal. In some places, it involves home schooling. In the communities we work with in Nepal, it involves tuning in for distance radio education classes or attending a small ‘learning unit’ which teachers visit on a rotating basis. We love seeing our students’ continued love for learning, even in difficult circumstances! it's people like you - our wonderful supporters - who make this possible

15.01.2022 Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love. Some of our favourite things smiles, beginnings, love all in one beautiful photograph

15.01.2022 Things are staring to get tough on the ground in Uganda and Nepal. But we never want to lose sight of moments of hope and inspiration. Here’s just one Schools in Humla are reopening after being closed for months due to COVID-19. As they do, we want to ensure children are protected from the virus, which is why we’re providing all students with cloth masks. These masks just arrived at Yalbang School and were made by our partner, the Women’s Foundation. We loved seeing these pictures of the students at Yalbang School modelling their new masks aren’t they just gorgeous?!

14.01.2022 The past few weeks have been very busy for our teams around the world Continue reading for the latest on our COVID-19 response. In Uganda, we are working to distribute critical personal protective equipment (PPE) to our 100 Hospital to Home (H2H) village health team members (VHTs). Each VHT will receive a supply of both cloth and medical masks, as well as education for their use and soap for handwashing. The PPE will allow our community health workers to continue their v...ital work of making home visits to babies discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit. We supported Kiwoko’s HIV Department to make 2,900 cloth masks for their clients, who are more vulnerable to COVID-19. Adara was able to provide employment to one of the HIV clients to make the masks. In our last COVID-19 update we said that we were set up to start sending weekly SMS text messages to the VHTs in our H2H programme. Over the past two weeks we have begun sending these messages, providing vital education to the VHTs on COVID-19 prevention. In Nepal, the Adara team worked on a food relief plan for remote Humla. The plan includes emergency nutrition support to families in Humla in case of a food crisis in the district. It also includes additional nutrition training, greenhouse development, and seed distribution to support the community with food while food security is threatened by supply-chain issues during COVID-19. Our Nepal Country Director, Pralhad Dhakal, attended a Zoom meeting with Dupcheswore Rural Municipality regarding midday meals and education options for Ghyangfedi schools. Prior to COVID-19, Adara was providing midday meals to the students at 8 schools in Ghyangfedi. This is a crucial part of their nutrition. We are seeking to continue these meals in some capacity to support child nutrition during lockdown. This will be one part of our food relief plan. Toilet construction has started in two schools in Ghyangfedi. The construction is not directly related to our COVID-19 response, but it represents an excellent opportunity to provide people with employment and to get the toilets ready for when schools reopen. Sadly, cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Nepal. There are now more than 7,000 cases. Meanwhile, cases remain steady in Uganda, at just over 730. We will continue doing all we can to prevent the spread of disease. That’s all from us. We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

13.01.2022 Today we want to give a shoutout to our amazing team of community health workers in Uganda! Throughout the lockdown, this group have continued their vital work of following up-babies who have been discharged from the Kiwoko Hospital neonatal intensive care unit through home visits. They have been delivering services over the phone when they can’t reach a family by foot or continuing socially distanced services in person when they can. We love their dedication to ensuring babies have the best chance to survive and thrive! Enjoy this throwback shot from when many of the team could come together in person. Join us in sending them some love

11.01.2022 It is with a heavy heart that we share COVID-19 has arrived at Kiwoko Hospital in Uganda. In the face of this huge challenge, Kiwoko is responding brilliantly and working closely with the district taskforce and public health experts to break the chain of transmission. At Adara, we are doing everything we can to support them. Watch this video with our Senior Programmes Director, Madeline Vaughan, for a full update on the situation. At this difficult time, it is essential that we continue to help those in need. You can support this work by visiting the following link: https://a-time-to-stand-together.raisely.com/

10.01.2022 A lot has been happening in the Adara world over the last few months we've been updating plans, adapting services and implementing new projects. That's why we thought we would share an update from our programmes teams around the world who have been leading our COVID-19 response. Watch this video for the latest from the ground!

10.01.2022 There is one BIG smile under this mask can you see it? We just love the masks produced by our partners over at the Women's Foundation of Nepal. In fact, we love them so much we ordered hundreds of them to distribute to school students in Ghyangfedi and Humla. The Women Foundation’s new cloth mask business will generate much-needed income for women who are survivors of domestic violence, whilst also providing masks to protect school children and communities facing COVID-19. Two great causes

09.01.2022 Let us introduce you to Immaculate, who is Deputy In-Charge in the Kiwoko Hospital maternity ward. In late 2019, Immaculate had a beautiful baby boy. Sadly, he experienced complications after birth which meant he had to spend time in Kiwoko’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It was a scary time, but Immaculate knew her son was safe in the hands of staff in the NICU. Luckily, this little guy began to improve in the NICU and eventually Immaculate could take her new son home. But the support these two received didn’t stop there. Until six months of age, they received in-home follow-up care through our Hospital to Home programme. Now, Immaculate is thrilled to see her son thriving! She has returned to work in the maternity ward with a new perspective of the challenges sick newborns and their families face

09.01.2022 While COVID-19 has changed many things about life as we know it, there are some things that remain unchanged. An estimated 1.8 billion people menstruate, and this has not stopped because of the pandemic. We recently sat down with our Senior Programmes Director, Madeline Vaughan, to discuss prevailing local taboos about menstruation and how we’re working to tackle them, as well as the importance of conversations around dignified menstruation.

09.01.2022 A beautiful smile to brighten up your feed!

08.01.2022 It’s Friday! We hope you’re smiling as much as this beautiful mum. Another life brought into the world through the skilled hands of Kiwoko staff. Another happy mum and bub

08.01.2022 Twenty years ago, we joined hands with Kiwoko Hospital to celebrate a huge milestone: the opening of the hospital’s first neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Fast forward to 2020 and the NICU is a leading unit in Uganda, and an inspiration for others working in newborn health in low-resource settings globally. It is recognised as a centre of excellence in newborn health by the Ugandan Ministry of Health. To celebrate this 20-year anniversary, we have created a magazine to s...how you the remarkable impact this unit is having on families and communities across Uganda and beyond. We hope you will have a read to see the change you have been a part of. Read now: https://bit.ly/NICUMag

07.01.2022 In the face of all the challenges this year, we are so proud that our corporate advisory business, Adara Partners, has been providing advice to and supporting some of Australia’s largest companies. The fees that we generate are critical to our work with people in poverty. We are delighted to welcome Laura Sampson to our business team as our new Corporate Advisory Director. Laura is a deeply experienced corporate banker and advisor. We know she will lead our business for purpose to the next level generating revenue to help some of the world’s most vulnerable people at this time of huge need in our world.

07.01.2022 Our team has just returned from Ghyangfedi in Nepal after a big day distributing emergency food relief to 195 households affected by landslides. Nepal has been experiencing a very difficult monsoon season which has heightened the risk of landslides. Two villages in Ghyangfedi have had to relocate as a result. The local government has provided the households with temporary shelter, but families have been struggling to get enough food to eat. We knew we needed to step in to su...pport the community we have worked with since the 2015 earthquake. This emergency food relief should provide families with 2 months’ worth of food. It includes rice, beans, salt, cooking oil, dal and soap. During the day we also called on the help of students of Ghyangfedi school to help distribute masks so we could safely deliver food support to the community. They did a brilliant job and we’re so grateful for their help! We are proud that our Adara Nepal team are doing their part to reach people in need. We will continue doing all we can to provide support.

06.01.2022 During times of crisis like in a global pandemic nurses and midwives work tirelessly to care for patients, and to keep women and newborns healthy. We must support their important work, which contributes to the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. Hands up if you’re with us!

06.01.2022 Introducing the newly re-built Kermi School block in remote Humla, Nepal! We constructed this in partnership with the local community. The new construction includes 6 new classrooms, toilets and fencing. It’s also fitted out with new furniture. You may recall seeing previous updates on the construction of this block, so we’re thrilled to see it almost done. All it needs now is a splash of paint. We can’t wait to see students learning in this new building as soon as schools re-open!

06.01.2022 Wash those hands When COVID-19 first started to heat up, we made it our mission to ensure communities knew how to correctly (and thoroughly!) wash their hands. We also made sure they had soap and hand washing facilities so they could follow hand washing guidelines. Washing hands is just as important now as it was then. That’s why we continue to provide communities with soap and sanitisers as they need them, as well as additional training ... Are you still practising good hand hygiene?

05.01.2022 We are delighted to share our annual Operations Report with you. Launching this report each year is always time for celebration as we look back at all that had been achieved in the preceding 12 months, while also laying out our plans for the future. But this year, as we launch our 2019 report, COVID-19 is now firmly dominating the landscape of global public health and creating havoc with economies from one end of the world to the other. And yet the achievements of 2019 are extremely important and directly relevant to the challenges we now face. In this report, we highlight and celebrate that work and those achievements. We hope you can take the time to have a read. We promise it will provide you with a dose of positivity and joy! Read the report here: https://bit.ly/Adara2019OpsReport

04.01.2022 Do you know what we love? Seeing little seeds grow into big fruit and vegetables! Our team in Humla is currently doing our regular seed distribution in five villages ensuring these remote communities have access to healthy and tasty food. We’re also providing training on the use, management and maintenance of greenhouses, so communities can grow their vegetables year-round. With COVID-19 creating food insecurity in Nepal, supporting communities to grow their own food is critical.

04.01.2022 We’re getting to the pointy end of 2020 which means it’s time to start looking ahead to 2021. We’ve got big plans for the year ahead and we want to tell you all about them! 04.01.2022 When schools across the world began to close due to COVID-19, we knew we would need to think creatively to ensure children in remote Nepal would be able to continue learning. Read this piece from SBS Nepali about how this realisation led to the launch of our distance radio education project which is reaching thousands of children across Nepal.

04.01.2022 The weeks sure are flying by right now and our teams are achieving so much! Check out the latest update from our teams around the globe In Uganda, Adara’s Clinical Educator is travelling in the community to meet all of our Hospital to Home (H2H) village health teams (VHTs). She is providing supportive supervision and training in small meetings and distributing more personal protective equipment. Adara continues to send educational COVID-19 related SMS messages to all H2...H VHTs. This is helping them to adhere to the guidelines and to ensure they have the most up to date information to share with their communities. In Nepal, Adara’s Agricultural Coordinator has almost finished delivering agricultural training in Humla as part of our Food Relief plan in Humla. He is providing training on topics such as kitchen gardening, local seeds exchange, better utilisation of land, promotion of local crops and local food habits. Farmers will also receive training on greenhouse construction and repair and farming techniques, including the use of solar dryers to preserve food. The Adara team are also working on the procurement of various greenhouse materials and seeds. Schools in Humla are slowly reopening, with schools across the country set to open on August 17. Our health and education team have been working hard to disinfect all schools in Humla, which were used as COVID-19 quarantine centres during the lockdown. We will continue to distribute radio and home learning kits. We will also continue to deliver our FM radio classes for another month until we know all schools are open and all children are back in school. We are sure there are many children in Nepal excited to head back to school to see their friends again! That’s all from us for now. We will be back with our COVID-19 update in two weeks.

03.01.2022 Don’t forget to register for the Q&A with our team on the ground! 01.01.2022 Nothing is going to stop Sarita from chasing her dream of becoming a nurse. Sarita is in Grade 10 and lives in Humla, Nepal. Just a few months ago, she was gearing up for her final exams the last hurdle before she could begin studies in nursing Unfortunately, everything changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit Nepal. By the end of March, all schools had closed across the country. Sarita's final exam was postponed indefinitely.... Thankfully, in May we launched an FM radio distance education project in Humla, which has been hugely beneficial for students like Sarita. We are not used to this kind of teaching method, but it is a different experience This radio class means we are keeping up with our school, Sarita says. Thank you for standing with us to make this work possible!

01.01.2022 EXCITING NEWS! We are thrilled to share that for the first time in 58 years, Ghyangfedi School in Nepal has seen its first cohort of students receive their Secondary Education Examination results and all have passed! Five boys and five girls were part of this first cohort. One received an A+, three received an A, four received a B+, and two received a B. ... Five years ago, this community experienced unimaginable devastation after the horrific Nepal earthquake. Now, just a few years on, these students have passed this incredible milestone - and with brilliant results! Even COVID-19 can’t stop them. Thank you to everyone who stood with us to rebuild and transform the Shree Ghyangfedi School - you have helped make this possible. We’re so proud of these students for persevering in the face of huge challenges. Join us in wishing them all the best for their higher studies!

01.01.2022 75% of people in the most vulnerable countries lack access to clean soap and water. These are some of the most basic defences against COVID-19. This COVID crisis is not going to end for anyone, until it ends for everyone. We are all connected. Visit www.endcovidforall.com and pledge to stand in solidarity with all our global neighbours!
