25.01.2022 If you want to raise engaged citizens, people that understand what democracy is and know what the processes are to make a change, they need experience of that.... You can’t raise someone in an authoritarian regime for 18 years of their life and then say, ‘hey, now you have an empowered choice’ because they’re not used to being empowered. They’re used to being submissive. ~Kezia Cantwell-Wright

22.01.2022 Many of us grew up in a culture of comparison and competition that was reinforced in the school environment. We may find it hard to celebrate others’ achievemen...ts. We may question whether they are deserving of their successes. We struggle with love of self and love of others. In order to regain and relearn our empathy, we have to unlearn this drive to dominate. We need to deschool and decolonize so that we see other’s humanity instead of perceive them as threats. #untigering #unschooling #PeacefulParenting #GentleParenting #RespectfulParenting #ConsciousParenting #DecolonizingParenting #AsianParenting #AsianAmerican

18.01.2022 The ability for students to work at their own pace and decide when and how they would like to learn was a common theme in our Learning from remote learning’ rep...ort! (https://buff.ly/30CzcLJ). Schools and timetables should be more flexible about how students learn including shorter school days and longer breaks between classes to rest and refocus. Has your school been flexible with remote learning? What would you like to keep as the gradual return to school progresses? #vicsrc #studentvoice

15.01.2022 The catch-up agenda for lost learning due to the Pandemic needs to be re-framed. Our youngest children do not need interventions, they need interactions. The...y do not need tests, they need time. They do not need to catch up to their friends, they need to catch up with their friends. Care, compassion and connection is what matters right now.

15.01.2022 We are extending the celebration until summer 2022! We launched Summerhill School’s official centenary celebrations today with the wonderful 100th Birthday Fes...tival Taster Event (don’t worry if you missed it as we’ll be showing the highlights here over the next few days). As was announced at the event: this was the first of many celebratory events which will take place over the coming months. To include a big online event this summer, as well as fun events which Summerhill supporters can host themselves throughout the year, and the festivities will culminate in our historic offline Summerhill Festival of Childhood next summer 2022 (exact dates TBC)! We’re so excited to extend our celebrations for another year and we invite you to come on this journey with us. Watch this space for more news!

14.01.2022 The problem with saying our children are falling behind or losing so much of their education is that it assumed education is a list facts to collect. But li...fe-long learning is about learning from your experience. Teaching in this system is difficult because teachers are forced to teach the same curriculum. There is an opportunity for all of us to learn resilience right now and the great teachers will find a way to nurture resilience in children (and hopefully not upset admin too much) What children are actually missing is not curriculum but relationships. Knowledge should not be mistaken for wisdom.

14.01.2022 "To offer something truly freely to another person, to share something with enthusiasm and without attempts at coercion, requires humility. It means you can't be too invested in the outcome, can't make it too much about you, because you are offering a gift not a burden." Idzie Desmarais

09.01.2022 Becoming Who I Am: #OpalSchool classrooms are vital places of joyful theory-building. But what lives bloom from these roots? The rich neural architecture constr...ucted in our learning environments lead students to become neighbors, co-workers & changemakers...one human at a time. Created by Opal School parents Irene Tejaratchi Hess & Mark Palansky, this film has shown at Helsinki Education Film Festival & Oregon Documentary Film Festival.
