22.01.2022 AUSC Black amateurs farewell captain ‘Tex’ Dr João Aguiar Macedo Teixeira ‘Tex’ - pictured left - joined AUSC in mid-2018 and previously played for Ermesinde Sport Clube 1936 - formed the same year as AUSC. ... He hadn’t played for several years as football was given a backseat to his academic career - he is a researcher at The University of Adelaide in population genetics focusing on the evolution of humans and closely related species. When he came to Australia he was invited to come out to training by AUSC Black reserves captain Associate Professor Bastien Llamas - a world-renowned biomedical researcher who answers archaeological and evolutionary questions of past human populations and extinct animals. Joao quickly fell in love with Adelaide University Soccer Club as he identified with the culture and values that we had in place and were building towards. Very quickly he was given the nickname ‘Tex’ by club legend Alex Reade, as Alex couldn’t pronounce his name properly. And it has stuck. In his time at the club, ‘Tex’ has displayed a fiery tenacity that has been matched with a high level of technical ability and tactical awareness. He has been a willing mentor to some of the younger players coming through and an enthusiastic participant in club events and rituals - such as the ‘Goose of the Week’. This year he was appointed first team captain and has lead the team in a difficult year with enthusiasm and determination. At the moment he is returning to Portugal while his professional future is up in the air. He isn’t sure if he will play again as he only has three clubs in his heart - FC Porto, Ermesinde and Adelaide University.
