21.01.2022 This Wednesday (18th March) is a very big day for Speech Pathologists and the field. It is Swallowing Awareness Day! This years theme is Dysphagia. A difficult diagnosis to swallow! Our speechy team have set a challenge for the company to eat a modified diet, to raise awareness for those with a dysphagia diagnosis. Alternate lunch and drink options will be provided on Wednesday and get keen to trial thickened coffee (may or may not put you off coffee forever :/). Dysphagia i...s difficulty swallowing. It affect a persons ability to safely swallow drinks, food, medication and their natural saliva. Like breathing, swallowing is essential to everyday life. Humans swallow approximately 700 times a day. People who have trouble swallowing are at risk of choking, poor nutrition and dehydration, while babies and children with difficulty feeding may not take in enough nutrients to support growth and brain development. Left untreated, swallowing disorders can have a devastating effect on a persons physical and emotional well-being. Stay posted to see how the life, kids, disability, and rehab in motion teams fair on Wednesday!

However, we may also opt to gather information or provide therapy with you via telephone or teleconference, particularly if you have been unwell, are in self isolation, are immune compromised. We will be asking additional questions before we visit you about COVID19 and any o...ther risks. We want to keep you safe as well as minimise infection risk of our staff. 07.01.2022 We had a successful 2020 Swallowing Awareness Day! Our speech team delivered the goods, with a mixture of pureed, soft, and bite sized foods, as well as thickened tea! Jelly was also provided. But why would this be a bad choice? Jelly dissolves in your mouth, becoming a liquid. These little things matter to a client who is at risk of aspirating (food or drink going into the lungs).... Some of the team were brave enough to try some!!! If you or someone you know is hanging difficulty swallowing food or drinks, please contact our office on; (02) 4647 9995. If you would like more information, please refer to the Speech Pathology Australia website, or the IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) Framework. Please spread the word and raise awareness for those which have difficulty swallowing! #dysphagia #swallowingawareness #SPA
