25.01.2022 Talking About Cancer - Reading Between the Lines In any social conversation, it is often a matter of reading between the lines to truly understand what the other person might be asking what do they really want to know. This is particularly true when it comes to conversations about cancer. In this video, Tom aims to take the pressure off what might be a confronting or difficult conversation about cancer. He suggests ways to hear beyond the actual words to understand the mean...ing behind them. Do they really want to know about your cancer treatment, or do they simply want to know that you are alright? It is about understanding the questioners needs whilst protecting and standing up for your own. This is the 2nd in a series of 4 videos sharing insights and guidance about how to talk about cancer on your own terms. #advancedbreastcancergroup #abcg #benefitofgroups #supportingwomen #advancedbreastcancer #breastcancerawarness #livingwithmetastaticbreastcancer #whatcanIsay #talkingaboutcancer

24.01.2022 What can I say? Leonie The purpose of 'what can I say' is not to put barriers up on questions or comments, but to break them down. The caution surrounding discussions about terminal disease generally leads to a total avoidance of it. Which, as Leonie points out in this video is the worst thing someone could do. Leonie shares not only her experience talking about her diagnosis, but also the very real and personal reaction she had when she found out about it, and the strength a...nd solidarity she feels in being part of the ABCG. #advancedbreastcancergroup #abcg #benefitofgroups #supportingwomen #advancedbreastcancer #breastcancerawarness #livingwithmetastaticbreastcancer #whatcanIsay

23.01.2022 What Can I Say? Emotional Outcomes. From Mary and Pias perspective, 'Depressing' is not a word that describes either being a therapist or a member of this group. It is challenging, confronting, inspiring and many other things, including fun at times, but it is not depressing. #advancedbreastcancergroup #abcg #benefitofgroups #supportingwomen #advancedbreastcancer #breastcancerawarness #livingwithmetastaticbreastcancer... #whatcanIsay See more

17.01.2022 Communication is key. As COVID19 restrictions are gradually lifting it is important to reflect on what has been one of the more difficult aspects of isolation. Being separated from loved ones and friends has highlighted the inherent need for people to connect with and talk to each other. Feeling isolated, whether physically or emotionally can be even more pronounced when coupled with a diagnosis of metastatic cancer. The ABCG aims to limit those feelings of isolation by enco...uraging women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer to connect with and gain support from the group and women who have experienced that same isolation. https://www.advancedbreastcancergroup.org.au/contact/ #advancedbreastcancergroup #abcg #benefitofgroups #supportingwomen #advancedbreastcancer #breastcancerawarness #livingwithmetastaticbreastcancer #whatcanIsay

12.01.2022 What Can I Say? Lynette We have heard so many times how much the women in the group support each other in learning to live with a metastatic disease. 10.01.2022 For 21 years we have learnt from and been inspired by the incredible women who have been a part of the Advanced Breast Cancer Group. Today, on International Womens Day, we want to say thank you.

10.01.2022 What Can I Say? Talking about a terminal illness, particularly to a person who has been diagnosed, seems to be often answered by silence. The silence is not out of a lack of compassion but rather a fear of saying the wrong thing or of acknowledging what is a scary and unpleasant reality for some. At the end of 2019, at the Advanced Breast Cancer Group workshop, women from the group as well as group therapists Mary O'Brien and Pia Hirsch participated in an activity that looked... at some of the difficulties involved in talking about metastatic cancer. They addressed questions and comments that they or others are frequently asked. The overwhelming message coming from the women was that it is okay to talk and to ask questions, even if you are nervous about whether it is appropriate or not, because the alternative of having your experience ignored, is far worse. This final video is the compilation of all that has been shared up to now. Thank you to everyone who participated. #advancedbreastcancergroup #abcg #benefitofgroups #supportingwomen #advancedbreastcancer #breastcancerawarness #livingwithmetastaticbreastcancer #whatcanIsay

08.01.2022 Relationship building with health practitioners. 07.01.2022 Moving the group to all of us meeting by telephone took a little getting used to, but the women have been accepting of the need to do so and have responded with good humour, as usual. Whilst it has been disappointing to have to cancel the workshop, which had been planned for this month (May), we are all pleased we are still able to speak weekly. The group continues to be open to new members, so no matter where you are in Queensland, if you or someone you know is living with metastatic breast cancer, and is interested in finding out more, please get in touch, either by email or telephone.

05.01.2022 Coping with uncertainty. Professor Jane Turner. 01.01.2022 Due to concerns about the spread of the Covid-19 virus, we have made the decision to move to a telephone support group for all, removing the option for meeting one another face-to-face for the time being. We have made this decision to ensure we are protecting the physical health of the women in our group, whilst still being able to provide the support and connections vital to their wellbeing. If you are interested in joining the group and connecting with other women living with metastatic breast cancer, particularly in this time of uncertainty, please contact us at [email protected] or on 07 3217 2998.

01.01.2022 This year has been challenging for many people with changes to the way we work, travel and live. The way our group runs also changed and we would like to thank all of the women in the ABCG for their support, patience, acceptance and good humour as we moved first to phone only groups, and then to videoconference. It has been a difficult year being separated from each other in person however running the group via video each week has provided a great way to stay connected. htt...ps://www.advancedbreastcancergroup.org.au/ #advancedbreastcancergroup #abcg #benefitofgroups #supportingwomen #advancedbreastcancer #breastcancerawarness #livingwithmetastaticbreastcancer #whatcanIsay #talkingaboutcancer
