22.01.2022 I think we would all agree that to successfully take a patient from pain and dysfunction to pain free and functional, that we can't simply rely on purely passive treatment approaches. - Far better that we progressively get the patient to become an active participant in their own rehabilitation. But how do we do that for the patient that just LOVES receiving treatment and doesn't want to DO anything?? -... Well, there will be some patients who will resist active participation, but that's not their fault. It's ours! We (or some other therapist they've had in the past) has conditioned them that treatment is a passive experience for them. That they get to come in and lay down, and you will do all the work. That's on us! - One way forward is to begin using manual therapy that incorporates movement. This is one of the reasons why we at ACE created Functional Release Cupping. A passive therapy, incorporating active movement. It works as a fantastic stepping stone to have the patient take an active role in the session. - It will help them discover new pathways to pain free movement and the confidence that they will often lose with injury or long term pain. - Rehabilitation MUST include active participation if it is going to reinforce long term chance. 17.01.2022 Electromuscular Stimulation (EMS) is a versatile and effective treatment technique that is often used in conjunction with Dry Needling... But why? - 1) The skin provides electrical resistance that reduces the ability for the current to pass to the motor nerve and produce the desired outcome. Using a needle, we create a conduit for that current and bypass the resistance created by the skin and superficial tissues. - 2) The needle allows us to be precise with the location and ...depth of the current. We can specifically target a trigger point, a deeper muscle or even motor points within a muscle. - 3) Using the needle as the electrode, we can place them strategically so that we can intentionally stimulate a specific group of fibres within a muscle, allowing us to bias the effect to where it is needed most. - Not mentioned here are the many and varied physiological benefits of electromuscular stimulation as a modality... We send out regular thought provoking articles to help you with you clinical work, business, career, education and anything else that will support you as a therapist. Here is one that went out yesterday... I have a business related observation for you today. ... This is something that Ive discovered to be true, but something that took me quite a while to realise. Its very easy to fall into the trap of believing that we need to be constantly innovating, constantly changing what we do and constantly launching something new. Innovation is important, but rapid change of direction is not. Unless of course you failed to alter your course when you should have... Building and running a successful business is very much like Captaining a large ship. If you want to avoid hitting an island, you start correcting your course when you first make sight of that land mass. You dont wait until you are almost on the beach and then pull the wheel to the left. Sometimes it can be hard to see the obstacles coming, and in those situations you are forced to make a large correction, but if you are paying close attention then small corrections are all you need. Businesses have a lot of moving parts, require consideration of clients, team members, resources, culture and more. And for this reason, adjusting your course in small increments requires much less effort than turning suddenly. COVID has taught us that anything can happen. Pear shaped is possible at any moment and we dont always get a lot of warning. Much time and effort can be wasted in waiting and hoping that the island coming towards us may just suddenly move out of our way, but far better we expect it wont and make a correction early. What is required of us? Paying attention. Your business is that large ship. It requires monitoring of all systems. It requires you to watch closely for signs of malfunction. It also needs you to watch that horizon, spot potential danger and plot a course around it. Otherwise you are just on a raft at the whim of the currents and the wind. So where do you find yourself now? If you are where so many others are in this strange time of global change that has turned things upside down, youve got three options... 1) Give up and go swimming. 2) Hope the wind and current get you there in the end. 3) Turn the wheel hard. The time for small adjustments has gone, so steer that thing in a different direction. Happy sailing.
