25.01.2022 Harry is one of the most handsome and friendliest Kelpies you are ever likely to meet. His owners were out for the day, and when they returned they noticed that Harry injured himself. He had blood pouring down his leg and was not standing on it. They do not know how he had injured himself, but there was a cut across his right knee. On arrival at their regular vets the seriousness of the injury was realised. Harry had transected his patella tendon. This is a limb threat...ening injury that may result in amputation. The patella tendon attaches all your thigh muscles to your shin bone, and enables you to extend the leg and stand. Without this tendon you cannot bear weight or stand on the leg. Harry was given pain killers and immediately referred. On arrival at Baldivis Advanced Surgery Centre, Harry was admitted to hospital for emergency surgery to try and save his leg. The patella tendon must be able to withstand a massive amount of tension during weight bearing, walking and running. As tendons are very slow to heal and break down, this sort of injury can quite often result in amputation of the leg. Harry was treated with broad spectrum antibiotics, as the cut involved the joint and infection of the knee joint would be very serious. To repair the cut tendon, a combination of techniques were employed. The cut tendon ends were re-attached using strong suture material and a special stitch pattern. Once re-attached the stitches had to be protected to prevent the high tension environment from simply tearing them out. To this end orthopaedic wire was looped around his knee cap and anchored through a hole in the shin bone. This took the tension off the stitched ends of the tendon. To further protect the knee we had to put Harrys leg in a form of brace. The brace consisted of pins that were placed into the bone, and stopped him from flexing or extending the knee. With lots of patience from Harrys owner and some recovery time the tendon went on to heal without incident. The pins and loop of orthopaedic wire were removed from Harrys leg after 6 weeks. Harry has made a full recovery, and is out and about and playing in the park again. Image 1.) *Graphic Warning* Harry transected his Patella Tendon. Image 2.) The knee brace consisting of pins engaging the bone in Harrys leg. The loop of orthopaedic wire can also be seen looped around the knee cap and anchored in a hole in the shin bone. Image 3.) Harry relaxing at home after surgery; ensuring limited movement. Image 4.) Harry happy as "Harry" at the beach after a long but worth it, recovery.

25.01.2022 MEET Rubert the 9 month old Australian Cattle Dog. Rubert came in to see us as he was unable to weight-bear on his left front leg. The concerned owners were uns...ure as to how he exactly he had hurt the leg. The leg was quite obviously swollen in the region of the wrist and we were concerned that this was a serious injury. Rubert was given pain relief, anaesthetised and taken for X-rays. We could see on X-rays that he had broken both his radius and his ulna. These were broken quite close to the wrist. This was a serious injury which could fortunately be repaired by Baldivis Vet Advanced Surgery Centre. Rubert was taken into theatre, and a plate and screws were applied to the broken radius. This provides sufficient strength and stability to allow both the radius and ulna to heal. Rubert is currently recovering well, and should have a complete return to normal activity once the bone has healed. Look at those puppy dog eyes Rubert was surrendered to Baldivis Vet Hospital and the team at Dont Go Astray - Help Those Animals In Need will be finding him a forever home once he is recovered. Please contact Kylie at Baldivis Vets if you would like to help Rubert on: 9524 1466.

24.01.2022 Shelby was brought in to Baldivis Veterinary Hospital as her owner, Steve, noticed she had been losing some weight. Dr Teryn Baldivis Vet Hospital examined Shelby and saw that although Shelby had lost some weight, her abdomen was enlarged and turgid. Dr Teryn immediately recommend an ultrasound examination. She was concerned that there may be a tumour in Shelbys abdomen, and that there was a risk of it bursting at any moment. An ultrasound examination revealed that ...Shelby had a tumour on her spleen. These tumours can quite often burst and result in severe blood loss into the abdomen. Quite often with fatal results. X-rays were taken of Shelbys chest and blood tests were performed to check if she was a candidate for surgery. Thankfully these were normal, and Shelby could be operated on. Baldivis Advanced Surgery Centre performed surgery on Shelby. Dr Stephen removed a tumour, weighing 3.8 kg and measuring 30 cm in diameter, from Shelbys abdomen. The tumour was so large and placing pressure on Shelbys stomach that she could not eat enough. Shelby recovered without any complications from the surgery, and is back at home with her caring owner Steve. Get well Shelby! #advancedsurgery #tumourremovals #sharpei

22.01.2022 WILLOW WILL HOP AGAIN! Willow is a 6 month old orphaned Joey that had broken her left leg. There was no known history of trauma which could have caused the fracture. Willow was referred to Baldivis Advanced Surgery Centre, where she was examined by Dr Stephen. On assessing Willow, she appeared healthy, but was unable to use her left leg and there was some shortening (contracture) of the muscle in the broken leg. On taking x-rays we immediately noted that Willows bone ...is not very dense, and that the walls (cortices) of the bone are very thin. Willow had fractured her shin bone! The lack of density in the bone may be due to a condition known as nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, which results in weak bones similar to osteoporosis in older people. In hand-reared orphaned animals it is quite often due to nutritional imbalances or vitamin D3 deficiency due to lack of sunlight! Willow appeared healthy in all other respects. A fracture in such a young animal is of major concern, due to the lack of hard, mineralised bone in which to place screws. Willow went into theatre on the same day. The fracture was repaired by Dr Stephen and his team using a special plate and specialised screws. Due to the dedicated ongoing intensive care and physiotherapy by Willows owners her leg function is returning to normal. Her family are very dedicated wildlife carers and have rescued a family of Kangaroos who have accepted Willow as part of their mob.

Highly recommend the clinic to everyone with a fur baby. I've sent all of my 25 dogs/puppies there and will not go anywhere else. Thank you all again Ricketts Family. Thank you for your kind words Rebel w...as the bravest girl!

20.01.2022 MEET AUDREY - The Missing, Miracle Cat! Audrey is a 11 year old Abysinian cat. She was missing from home for 3 days when her concerned owners found her laying in a bush, unable to walk and severely dehydrated. She was rushed to Baldivis Vet Hospital where she was immediately assessed. She had some nerve damage to her right leg, and was having difficulty breathing. To make things worse Audrey suffers from chronic kidney disease. She was immediately placed on intravenous ...fluids and x-rays were taken. On taking x-rays it was found that Audreys abdominal organs had displaced through a diaphragmatic hernia into her chest. Her small intestine, liver and gall bladder were filling her chest cavity and collapsing her lungs and placing pressure on her heart. Without urgent surgical intervention Audrey was going to suffocate and die. Audrey was transferred to the Baldivis Advance Surgery Centre for further treatment. Once she was stabilised sufficiently to survive the anaesthetic she was rushed into theatre. During surgery a ventilator had to do the breathing for Audrey. The organs were removed from her chest cavity and returned to the proper location. The massive rent in Audreys diaphragm was repaired and a drain was placed into her chest to help re-inflate the collapsed lungs. Once the tear in the diaphragm was repaired and the collapsed lungs re-inflated Audrey was slowly weaned off the ventilator to see if she was able to breath on her own. Success, Audrey was breathing well, maintaining good blood oxygen levels, her blood pressure and heart rate were all stable. Audrey was monitored intensively by Baldivis Emergency Vet overnight to make sure she continued to recover without any complications. Audrey was able to go home the following day. We never found out how Audrey got injured, but she continues to recover from her accident.

18.01.2022 Thank You to the Sound Telegraph for a wonderful article on a NEW procedure we're able to offer your Pets! "With an entire surgical suite dedicated to Advanced Surgery Baldivis Vet offers everything from cruciate ligament surgery to fracture repairs and recently, veterinary arthroscopy. Arthroscopic surgery is a procedure that is used to examine and repair the joints of a dog via a surgical camera as little as 1.9 mm!... Joints that are routinely inspected and treated by arthroscopy are the shoulder and elbow, allowing the Veterinarian to have a detailed assessment of the joint in a minimally invasive fashion. It also helps avoid some of the risks and discomfort that can be associated with traditional, more extensive open surgery. Recently introducing veterinary arthroscopy to the clinic, Baldivis Vet is now one of a very few centres in Perth that can offer the procedure. Arthroscopy can be used for diagnostic purposes, especially if radiology has not revealed the cause of joint issues. An arthroscopic camera is inserted into the dog through a small portal incision for visualization. The advantages of Arthroscopic surgery include reduced postoperative pain, accelerated recovery and a high success rate" Book in to meet Dr Stephen and the Advanced Surgery Centre team today for an initial $74.50 consult. bookings are available by calling 9524 1466.

18.01.2022 Meet HANK! The Bernese Mountain Dog. Hank came into Baldivis Vets as his mum noticed a lump near his abdomen region while bathing him. As with most lumps we se...e, they can be clinically normal. Hank consulted through Dr Tom, who recommended that Hank had an abdominal ultrasound performed straight away due to its suspiciously sinister nature. The ultrasound revealed a relatively big mass attached to the kidney in the retro-peritoneal space. Hank was referred to the Baldivis Vet Advanced Surgery Centre and surgical resection of the mass was recommended. Dr Stephen Rabie subsequently performed a successful nephrectomy (removal of the entire kidney). Histopathology later confirmed its diagnosis of Histiocytic Sarcoma. Hank had an uneventful recovery in the hospital with our dedicated staff and was given the all clear to go home a few days after! Hank would not go anywhere without his Bernese Mountain Dog Toy! We hope you have a quick recovery Hank.

Radiographs were take...n and Odin had fractured his fibula (calf bone) and was in quite a bit of pain. Dr Stephen & Baldivis Vet Advanced Surgery Centre performed a fracture repair and plated his leg. Odin now has 6 weeks of recovery with a splint bandage and regular bandage changes. Unfortunately, sometimes families do need to surrender their animals that need urgent veterinary treatment for various reasons and we work with rescue organisations to assist with surrenders & stray animals in funding, fostering & adoption to ensure animals have a chance at a healthy and happy life. 09.01.2022 BELLA - THE AMERICAN BULLDOG PUPPY Bella is the cutest puppy! She is a happy bouncy 4 month old American Bulldog. She was out playing, when she jumped up to greet her owner. As she landed she gave a yelp, and could not use her front paw. She was taken to Baldivis Emergency Vet where she was assessed. Bella was given painkillers, and admitted for x-rays. The x-rays revealed that Bella had broken all the bones in her paw (Figure 1)! ... Bella was transferred to the Baldivis Advanced Surgery Centre. She underwent surgery to repair the broken bones. Small 1.5 mm plate and screws were used to stabilise the two central metacarpal bones. One of the other bones was repaired by placing a pin in this tiny bone. The pin in this bone has a diameter of only 1.25 mm (Figure 2)! Once these bones were repaired the fourth bone (which had an incomplete) was aligned. Bella visits for regular bandage changes and she is recovering very well; such a brave girl.

08.01.2022 We had Duke come into the animal hospital to see Dr Stephen in the Advanced Surgery Centre. Duke is a healthy male of 35kg. A Bull Terrier with a big personality. He broke his leg jumping off a UTE whilst he and the family were out camping. Duke could not bear any weight on his broken leg when he was seen by Baldivis Advanced Surgery Centre. Dukes fracture presented the perfect opportunity to perform a new method of fracture repair called MIPO (Minimally invasive plating os...teosynthesis). This technique enables the application of bone plates to broken bones through key-hole surgery. By repairing the fracture in this way we get more rapid bone healing because the muscles and blood vessels are not injured as much during the surgery. In Dukes case we were able to apply the plate to the broken bone by making one 25 mm incision at the top and one 25 mm incision at the bottom of the leg. Duke was walking on the leg the day after surgery and went home on that same day. He is doing very well since. *Photo 1- Below are x-rays taken of Dukes broken tibia (shin bone). *Photo 2 - Below are the x-rays with the plate applied. *Photo 3 - I didnt capture a photo of Duke however, this one is to cute not to share.

03.01.2022 This is the gorgeous "Maggie May" the 3 year old rescue Pug, she previously had 3 homes before her now owners gave her the perfect forever home. Maggie May came into Baldivis Vet Hospital for a health check and our vets noticed an unusual breathing noise. Maggie May was booked in with the Advanced Surgery Centre for a subsequent procedure called "Staphylectomy" which is soft palate resection and widening of the nares (nostrils). This can effect some brachycephalic breeds (F...rench Bulldogs, Australian Bulldogs, Boston Terriers etc) and Maggie May is much more comfortable now. We wish you all the best Maggie May who is now off on a doggie adventure travelling around Australia in a caravan with her parents. #welovepugs #brachycephalic #staphylectomy #maggiemay

01.01.2022 This little cutie is Chloe the Chihuahua. Little Chloe fractured her right radius and ulna (front leg). Due to her being so tiny; screws to help fix the fracture may have caused her bone to split. Dr Stephen used an external fixation type II frame, which is pins going from one side of the arm through to the other side with a bar on either side to stabilise and support the bone while it heals. Chloe comes in every week for a bandage change and this time wore her favourite dre...ss for her favourite Vet. You are doing so well Chloe! #advancedsurgerycentre
