05.01.2022 MATERIAL FOCUS (charred timber): Traditionally a Japanese practice of preserving timber, Shou Sugi Ban, or charred timber, is the process of charring softwoods historically but Australian hardwoods in local timber mills. The charring process gives a BAL29 fire rating and class one durability which increases the suitability in metro and regional areas. Aside from the visually pleasing weathered look, charring creates a carbon crust that is UV resistance and free from ‘silverin...g’ which preserves the dark rich charred appearance. It is also widely recognized that the charring improves timber durability and resistances to insect attacks.
