25.01.2022 FOAM ROLLERS Vs STRETCHING Is there even a competition? Im generally asked which one is better to do, but the fact is they both do different things to your tissue and both used together are important. ... Foam rolling and spikey balls help alleviate tight fascia (fascia is like a plastic bag around your muscles, its all over your body). This release helps blood flow and reduces fascial restrictions giving you more range of motion. Stretching elongates tendons (the ends of your muscle) which in turn makes them less rigid and more responsive to loads you place in them through exercise. So use both! And to figure out which of the many ways you can roll and stretch would be better and more specific to you, see your myo! Wishing all health, wellness & success

25.01.2022 So I have been hunting for a Sunbury based Myotherapist for awhile now....... and the search is over! Dan White is a Myotherapist operating out of Sunbury Physiotherapy on Horne Street. I like to get to know who I refer to and after discussing our views and personal approaches to myotherapy (and getting a treatment of course!) I am happy to say, he knows his craft! If youre interested in booking in, check out the link below:... https://www.danwhitemyotherapy.com.au See more

22.01.2022 SPRING Finally a little bit warmer! A fantastic season to re-motivate yourself and refresh in the nicer surrounds ... Remember not to hit it too hard too fast if you've been more sedentary over the winter! Lots of injuries come this time of year from lack of warming up or continuing at the exact same level straight away or 'like you used to' after having months off or away from that specific exercise or sport. Wishing all health, wellness & success

22.01.2022 ~ OPTIMAL LOADING This is a technique used in injury management to stress tissue at a point to promote healing. Its an interesting tissue principle that if you dont use the damaged tissue at all it will weaken or heal improperly, and if you over use it you risk damage. As with everything in life its a careful balance! ... This video at 14min talks about a similar theory in relation to stress. Give the full thing a watch if you have time, but from 14mins onwards it really highlights why we need stress (at the right levels!) to develop and its not a bad thing! 21.01.2022 WINTER It's getting colder and frostier each morning and less motivating to get outside. Cold itself has many benefits in recovery processes post exercise and can also be looked at (in smaller doses!) as a positive stress on the body. Positive stress is short term stress that fires up out natural response to stress, and is something required for tissues to strengthen! ... So rug up and find a bit of outdoor time, small pain for a longer term gain. The beds are warm at Affinity, and appointments are available this week! Wishing all health, wellness & success

21.01.2022 Wishing all a Merry Christmas! Hope everyone is finding time to enjoy this beautiful sunny day with friends and family

20.01.2022 OLD INJURIES Something's in the air at Affinity I'm seeing loads of patients coming in with injuries or dysfunctions they have been putting up with for years!... 20.01.2022 TIGHT MID BACK? The old saying put your back into it definitely doesnt fly at Affinity Often I will see patients using their spinal erectors incorrectly and out of balance with their lower limb or shoulder girdle.... This results in tight, sore backs and could potentially lead to joint irritations in our spine in the long term This can also be linked to spinal erector fatigue and poor posture! Check out this exercise below from The Prehab Guys! This will help mobilise your mid back and isolate your rotator cuff from your back. Come in to Affinity to assess how you use your shoulder and what specifically needs to be worked on to stop your mid back getting tight! 20.01.2022 It's with a heavy heart I'm announcing the time for Affinity has come to pack up and move on. But why?! This long time local is relocating to the suburbs and has managed to weave some Affinity roots into another clinic! Affinity was very much my precious baby that grew in what couldn't have been a more supporting, beautiful community and I am very grateful to have met, treated and learnt from so many amazing and kind clients. Final day of business is officially the 25th of... October. Online booking will be limited, so best book through myself at 0419815955. For those interested in following.... my new place of work is still a project in the making... but can confirm it will be based in Watsonia. Stay tuned for the brighter (but very distant!) future ahead in 2020. Still as always, Wishing all health, wellness & success

19.01.2022 CHANGE IT UP A solid argument for mixing up your daily routine. When your working weeks start to blend into your weekends and life feels uneventful, do something different!... Go somewhere new or try something new, big or small your brain will thank you for it! The times when organising something outside of the normal routine feels the hardest might just be a sign your mind is too fatigued and needs a bit of novelty to re-charge. Write a couple of things down you would like to try, get inspiration from Lonely Planet, Urban List or simply google things in your area so you have something on hand for those brain is outta juice moments! SELF CARE IS KEY. Wishing all health, wellness & success

18.01.2022 CUPPING You may have seen some weird circular bruise marks on athletes before, and it's caused by cupping! Don't worry though, they aren't painful or feel like bruises at all and benefit the tissue via promoting blood flow and easing fascial restrictions.... If you're consistently tight and would describe your tight soreness as 'vague' or 'all over' cupping may be for you Call 0419815955 or click BOOK NOW Wishing all health, wellness & success

18.01.2022 MUSCLE ISOLATION It's super important to isolate and engage certain muscles or muscle groups before you get into functional exercise! 17.01.2022 NUTRITION Check out this little article from MindBodyGreen that highlights the importance of healthy whole foods! Often we fall into the trap of 'I'll binge on this and burn it off at the gym.' This mentality in itself views food as something you earn or have to punish yourself for. How exhausting! ... Healthy balanced lifestyles never involve punishment! Don't restrict yourself, make better choices! Find healthy options to food you love. 'You cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet, but you can always eat your way to a fitter and healthier body' ~ Carlo Filippono Wishing all health, wellness & success

16.01.2022 MUSCLE ISOLATION Its super important to isolate and engage certain muscles or muscle groups before you get into functional exercise! 15.01.2022 THE CORE Such an important part of our anatomy, it is literally the centre of everything we do. But doing 100's of sit ups is often a waste of time Sit ups strengthen superficial muscles of the core and fail to fully engage your deeper core muscles which are important for our back support and are our base for the range of motion for our limbs. ... TRANSVERSE ABDOMINIS is the main deeper muscle of the core we want to target. Lay on your back with your knees bent and rested in line with the hips. Draw the belly button towards your spine gently and slowly without holding your breath to switch it on. Do this before starting a core workout and make a mental note to engage this muscle during. You may notice your belly looking like a triangle type shape or your low back arching during abdominal exercises, and this is a sign you're not engaging your deeper core. Keep the belly flat, low back neutral and remember to breathe! Wishing all health, wellness & success

13.01.2022 Enjoy the long weekend! Whether you follow the races or just like the break, make the most of it! Wishing all health, wellness & success

12.01.2022 ~ FOAM ROLLING for the CORE I often see patients who find it hard to engage their core because their glutes and lower back are so tight! These patients often arch their lower back during sit ups, find it hard to draw their belly button to the spine and keep a soft neutral spine or simply feel all core workouts in their back. Foam rolling as a warm up before core work can definitely help make it easier for you to feel the muscles of your core working. ... Try out these foam rolling techniques before your core work and see if you feel the difference! Wishing all health, wellness & success

12.01.2022 CUPPING You may have seen some weird circular bruise marks on athletes before, and its caused by cupping! Dont worry though, they arent painful or feel like bruises at all and benefit the tissue via promoting blood flow and easing fascial restrictions.... 12.01.2022 CRAMMING with a HEADACHE? Busy working away at a desk or studying? Feeling wrecked after a long time sitting is one of the most draining feelings Tips to prevent this of course, get up and take breaks!... Set timers on your phone once every hour (or 2 if you are reallllllly addicted to work!) If your starting to feel stuck (particularly if you're studying) go take a walk outside, even drive somewhere new and take a short walk. This sparks up our mapping systems in our brain which are important for learning! But of course, see your myo for those tight shoulders and necks! Referred pain from muscles in the neck and shoulder commonly present in the temples and around the eyes. Wishing all health, wellness & success

11.01.2022 WINTER Its getting colder and frostier each morning and less motivating to get outside. Cold itself has many benefits in recovery processes post exercise and can also be looked at (in smaller doses!) as a positive stress on the body. 11.01.2022 WINGED SCAPS & TIGHT SHOULDERS There are many reasons for tight shoulders, but commonly I see winged scapulars (the triangular bone behind your shoulder), tight upper traps and chests. Be it from incorrect form at gym, sitting at a desk all day, lifting repetitively or just stress, there are ways to correct this imbalance and improve your shoulders range ... Try this exercise to help activate and isolate your serratus anterior muscle and lower trap fibres! SERRATUS ANTERIOR PUSH UP: - Get in a push up position (bend at the knee or full plank position) - Hands stacked evenly under the shoulders and chest lifted, eyes focusing on the floorspace above your hands (making sure your chin is not tucked and spine neutral) - Drop your chest slowly towards the ground - Pull chest back up to start position This is a great isolation exercise to get into before lat pull downs as it 'switches on' or makes you more readily able to engage your lower trap! Wishing all health, wellness & success

11.01.2022 Some say from little things big things grow.... and I love a good tree analogy But with the pandemic.... Id say this is more of the pressure that forged a small diamond situation! This is something Ive planned and mapped for awhile, and with the current climate, Ive been given the gift of some time to get on board with the technical side of things. I really hope this can be a good resource for those currently unable to access certain healthcare right now.... 10.01.2022 SLEEP & RECOVERY From the overly driven with trying to achieve too much at once, or the overly scheduled having not enough balance in their life, sleep and rest is often sacrificed. Not getting enough sleep and down time seems to be a chronic problem in modern lifestyle and it creates so many systemic issues in our bodies! It's worth overhauling your routine or goals and making sleep a priority for your long term wellbeing and success. ... Many people can still wake up tired even after getting a good 7/8 hours uninterrupted sleep. If this is you check out your sleep habits before bed: 1. Cut screen time 30mins before bed Blue light from screens mimics brain neurone activity of when we are awake encouraging us to stay up! 2. Decompress before bed Reflect on the day, reconsolidate what you've been through and plan for tomorrow! Write a small manageable and actionable to do list for the next day. If you're worried about something, write it down. If it's something within your control write down actionable things you can do to manage it. If it's out of your control, bin it! Here's an interesting test you may want to try to gauge whether you're getting enough good quality deep sleep. Wishing all health, wellness & success

04.01.2022 SQUATS A favourite amongst many and a great functional exercise for the lower limb Because it is a functional movement that uses multiple joints, there are a lot of things to keep track of in your basic squat, let alone modified or weighted versions! But don't get too confused, check out these tips ... 1. Start with your feet slightly wider than your hips & toes pointed slightly out (5 - 10 degrees) 2. Spine in neutral (so not curving and poking your butt out or rounded) and eyes up to elongate your spine, drawing in your core and maintaining your breath 3. Weight should be placed in the heels, so try and get comfortable with the shift of weight before lowering yourself 4. Lower your HIPS FIRST engaging the glutes before bending your KNEES 5. Make sure your knees are tracking in line with your feet not drifting inwards or over them. If this is really hard for you, your myo or personal trainer may give you additional exercises to help isolate some muscle groups. 6. Once you've reached parallel (when your hip joint is in line with your knee joint) push back up through your heels and squeeze your glutes to fully engage your whole muscle chain. In western society we tend to overuse chairs and under utilise the squat due falling or 'plonking' ourselves into seats. This changes our muscles ability to fully engage in a full range of motion. Over time this alters how we use our joints, causing parts of the joint to be used excessively creating wear. Not saying chairs aren't great, but put a bit of thought into how you place your body in your daily routine and try and strengthen what you got! Don't use it, you'll lose it! Wishing all health, wellness & success

03.01.2022 GET A GRIP! Your hand and wrist has so many small joints and structures within them and have learnt many complex movements specific to what you use them for. The part of our brain that maps or controls the nerves to our hand is one of the larger maps in the brain because our hand is so complex!... Often I will see repetitive strain injuries in wrists and thumbs or even hand wastage due to brain or neural injury or disease. Its really one of those things you dont know what youve got til its gone! Come get assessed and see what Affinity can do to help get your hands back in action Wishing all health, wellness & success

01.01.2022 GYM INJURIES Nothing worse than hurting yourself at the gym! Couple tips for if your worried you've hurt yourself: - Ice immediately for sharp pain for at least 30mins... - Book an appointment with your myo for a recovery plan! To prevent gym injuries from ever occurring in the first place, correct form needs to be implemented. Ask a personal trainer at the gym if you're unsure you're using correct form (or your myo ) If you go to the gym and always feel really sore or 'worked' the next day in just the one area despite mixing up different exercises for the body part (eg. arms Vs leg day) chances are, you've got some dominant muscles and are not using correct form. It's also worth while chatting to your myo about what you're aiming for at the gym to avoid unnecessary overloads. WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER Wishing all health, wellness & success

01.01.2022 CACAO BARK The not as guilty treat for those who love chocolate!
