25.01.2022 One more idea that will give you a jolt, but I must remove the cobwebs of your mind, don't give up your worldly ambition, your material aspirations. If you do so, it will do you no good it will bring harm to society and ruin our country. But don't become slaves of your desires. Be like the ocean which remains undisturbed as the turbulent rushing waters of rivers come to it. Enjoy sense-gratification, but don't let them overpower you. Don't despise life. There is no virtue in retiring to a wood and sitting enchanted in the solitary of samadhi. Heroism lies in remaining steadfast in the tumult of life when scales are heavily loaded against you, and attaining the samadhi of self equilibrium.-Sri Swami Satyananda

19.01.2022 #Digital Fasting Swami #SwamiNiranjanananda Saraswati... Let me tell you a story. A man, Mr X, calls his friend, Mr Y, early one morning by phone and there is no answer. So Mr X keeps trying to contact Mr Y by calling him many times for the next few hours, but still the phone remains unanswered. Mr X begins to worry thinking something bad has happened. So he sends messages - no answer. Whatsapp - no answer. Email - no answer. Twitter - no answer. Instagram - no answer. Now Mr X really becomes worried. He begins to dread that something awful has happened. So in the evening he decides to go to his friend's house to find out what happened. Around four o'clock, he walks into his friend's house, and there he sees his friend sitting in the garden in his lawn chair with a nice cup of steaming tea, reading a book, totally relaxed and happy. Now Mr X, who has been sending messages and making phone calls is really furious. He says, " I have been trying to contact you since morning, and you have not answered anything. Are you I'll? Are you sick? Mr Y says, "No, I'm perfectly healthy. I'm just enjoying my life. Today I am fasting." Mr X becomes quite irritated. He says, "Fasting is related with food. You may not have eaten, I can understand, but you can atleast answer the phone." Mr Y smiles and says, "Listen, today is my fasting day. It means fasting from digital consumption. Today I don't touch my phone. Today I don't look at my messages. Today I don't look at the social media. Today I don't look at my account. Today I just put the phone aside and become myself. I take up a book which I want to read, and read it. Spend the time with my family, laughing, playing, going out to places with them; I am not caught up looking at my phone." We have become so dependent and weak that we cannot live without a digital input for more than a few minutes to couple of hours. Can we break that pattern the become contained in ourselves? Instead of dissipating the energies outside, can we retain the energy and go through a process of self-awareness, self-discovery? Can we connect with the sense of happiness that is our internal feeling? -1 January 2018, Ganga Darshan, Munger

15.01.2022 Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati Sage Patanjali speaks of asana as sthiram sukham asanam. Does it mean that asana is that in which one is sthira and sukhi, or doe...s it mean that sthirata and sukha are outcomes of practising asana? Sthiram and sukham, stability and comfort, are the outcome of asana practice. Once they are the outcome of the asana practice, the posture itself becomes steady. Who can sit for five minutes without moving? Stillness does not come naturally, for stillness is not the nature of the senses. The entire body is governed by the senses. Distractions in the body are caused by the senses. Distractions and disturbances in the mind are caused by the senses. When you practise asana, you are not practising a physical posture. The body takes on a physical posture, however the effect of it is to reduce the hyperactivity of the senses. Once the hyperactivity of the senses is reduced, the body enters into a state of comfort and ease. Then a posture can be maintained for a longer period. Patanjali is advocating only those asanas which are static and comfortable. His first sutra is: Atha yogah anushasanam ‘Now, instructions on raja yoga’. This is interpreted by many people as meaning that raja yoga is a continuation of a previous yoga, and that previous yoga is hatha yoga. By the time you come to raja yoga, you have done all the physical movements that you need to do. Therefore, the focus of raja yoga is not on the practice of asana, but on the maintenance of the physical posture. Even if you do vrischikasana, sirshasana, mayurasana, or surya namaskara, in a manner in which you are experiencing steadiness and comfort in all the different movements and postures, you will be fulfilling the criteria of Sage Patanjali. The stillness of body and mind in a posture will lead you to pratyahara, introversion. Although stillness and comfort are the outcome of the asana practice, you have to remember that the statement is being made in relation to the stillness leading to pratyahara.

09.01.2022 Swami Sivananda's Song of 18 ITIES Serenity, regularity, absence of vanity, Sincerity, simplicity, veracity, Equanimity, fixity, non-irritability,... Adaptability, humility, tenacity, Integraty, nobility, magnanimity, Charity, generosity, purity. Practise daily these eighteen ITIES, You will soon attain immortality. Brahman is the only real entity, Mr So and So is a false non-entity. You will abide in eternity and infinity; You will behold unity in diversity; You cannot attain this in the university. But you can attain this in the Forest University, But you can attain this in the ashram in Rishikesh. What is the purpose of the 18 ITIES? Swami Niranjanananda: The final outcome of yoga is not isolating oneself from the world, but involving oneself more deeply in the affairs of the world, knowing one's place in it, one's duties, and how one can make a difference in other people's lives. This is what Swami Sivananda called the 'divine life'. As one follows the yoga of Swami Sivananda, the gross nature is transformed. As one becomes more sattwic, more mature in wisdom and develops greater understanding, there is deeper identification with the environment and the world. Transformation of a conditioned nature into a flowering nature is the 'divine life' described by Swami Sivananda. Swami Sivananda said that one should be able to express yoga in one's normal environment. For this to happen, the yogic concepts have to be ingrained in one's life. After all, a computer will function only according to its programming, its software. Therefore, one has to replace the software inside, upgrade the programming of the mind. Where does one find such software? Where does one find a programme that allows one to change one's computer's performance? That possibility is seen in the 18 ITIES of Swami Sivananda. The ITIES are the attempt to fill life with positive and beautiful qualities. Working with the ITIES is about cultivating positive habits. The 18 ITIES are sankalpas, positive resolutions one makes to become a better person. When one builds the positive dimension of one's nature, one become pure within, which enables one to enter the transcendental experience of life, the divine life. Bhakti Yoga Book 3

08.01.2022 Satsang with Swami Satyananda BE YOURSELF You do not need to be good to feel God. You are full of desires, lust, weaknesses, complexes, frustrations, greed, jea...lousy and animosity. Accept it. If you want to look saintly on the outside or even believe you are a saint, you will be in conflict with your mind. Your mind will be split into two parts. You will suffer from schizophrenia. People who like to be what they are intrinsically not will always be sick. They will suffer from headaches and constant stomach and liver problems. Be yourself. Don't try to become anything. Change happens by itself. I was not a good man. I never tried to become a good man. Everything happened by itself. Every man has an inner capacity. Let it unfold naturally. If you try to pour two litres of water into a one litre container, one litre will spill out onto the ground. Therefore, know what you are and be it properly. - Snippets from Paramhamsaji See more
