22.01.2022 We didn’t get to go to Melbourne Show this year. Instead I’m sharing the teams of past years. Now for the 2018 steer team. A very successful day for our Melbourne Polytechnic show team. ... Reserve champion medium domestic, and second in heat for Sooty, 2nd for Steggy, 4th for Ronald and 6th for Sur Loin in heavy domestic heats and 6th for Ol’Mate in his export heat. The steers are settled into their beds ready for tomorrow’s handler classes. 20.01.2022 As the Melbourne weather suddenly warms up this is a very engaging read about living in snake country. It looks all sciencey up there on the Uni Melb page but its a lovely relatable read and hopefully for many, an informative and reassuring one. Enjoy. P.S. If you are thinking of carrying a snake bandage kit on hikes/camps I can recommend these for $10 https://www.radoa.com.au/shop

15.01.2022 We haven’t got Melbourne Show in it’s standard format this year. In a normal year right now I’d be sending students into the ring with their steers for the handlers competition. Instead here’s a bit of a look back on previous years. First up is the 2019 team. 2019 We’ve survived another year of Melbourne Show.... This was the biggest team of students and steers I’ve ever put through the ring. 24 students through the ring, and 9 steers through for a total of 39 trips round the show ring. We came home tired but satisfied with our results. 2 highest placed school Steer awards, and 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th in led events. Bella and Ashley placing 3rd, Claire and Hannah 4th, Jesse C 5th, Jordyn and John placing 6th, and many more achieving highly commended ribbons in handler events. Ashlea and I are immensely proud of ALL the students who have participated in our steer programs this year. In a tough year with the price of grain where it is, the competition was tough and close in all events. But now for the big one. I am excited to announce that exhibit 217, Ralph was the highest placed Angus carcass exhibit overall. He was less than one point behind the champion export and grand champion carcass steer (That was a close one!). Our brand new association with Mount Lilydale Mercy College has been a great success, with 3 young people working with us and showing cattle, well done to them! There are many people who help make this program work, from the tireless work of our MP colleagues, to our amazing supporters/sponsors, Reid Stockfeeds, Yan Yean Stockfeeds, Live Work Play and Whittlesea Embroidery. And not forgetting our generous steer donors Bellveiw and Tibboburra Angus. Thank you everyone, let’s make next year even better!! Kate #melbpolymeans #agriculture #melbourneshow See more

15.01.2022 Some Webinars on soil on farms Dr Fiona Robertson will present on soil carbon. What is it? Why is it important? How much carbon is in Victorian agricultural soils? What controls soil carbon levels? Can we change soil carbon through management practices? https://www.mrsc.vic.gov.au//Understanding-your-farm-soil-

14.01.2022 Diploma of Agriculture students will not completely miss out on their Manage Trials experience this Semester. Despite the COVID-19 lockdown and the resulting online teaching, instead of running their trials out at our Yan Yean teaching farm they are running scaled down trials at home, in pots! They have chosen their crop and their treatment according to their own specific area of interest and we have posted them out what they need for their contactless windowsill trial. Special thanks go to our seed suppliers at VicSeeds and Baker Seed Company for helping us out when seeds were tough to source.

14.01.2022 All our teachers are working hard creating interactive learning experiences for our students while we are teaching remotely. Kate Norris, from our VET agriculture program is out in the beautiful Yarra Valley collecting footage for Establish pastures and crops for livestock production for her students.

10.01.2022 This is a must read about Bruce Pascoe, author of Dark Emu and his work with the Yuin, rediscovering and resurrecting Aboriginal agricultural practices with native perennial grasses. This week they have harvested mandadyan nalluk seed into flour and baked a loaf of bread. https://www.theguardian.com//its-time-to-embrace-the-histo

06.01.2022 We need you to share your fruit with wildlife this summer. With bushfires burning over 1 million hectares of native food sources, flying foxes and birds are bei...ng forced to seek more food in suburban backyards, and we've had a huge spike in emergency calls for flying foxes getting caught in deadly fruit tree nets. If you have fruit trees, please consider bagging just the fruit you need, and leaving the rest out for wildlife. Flying foxes are incredibly important as they're our forest pollinators: we're going to need all of them to help regenerate the forests that have been lost. Our wildlife have had a tough enough time lately, let's give them all the help we can right now.

06.01.2022 We didnt get to take a team to show this year. Instead Im sharing past years teams from Melbourne Polytechnic. Now the 2018 handlers team! Congratulations team Melbourne Polytechnic! Handlers competition was tough, against some top handlers our team excelled. Congratulations to Kim for her 1st, Holly 4th, Jennifer 5th and Picard 6th place in their heat. And introducing our new additions to the team, our Certificate II students. A very successful show for 2018! #melbpolymeans #melbpolymeansagriculture #agriculture #certiiiagriculture #certiiagriculture

05.01.2022 Included here is an item of interest from our own Dr Sadiqul Awal, who is talking about the use of microalgae to combat the salinization of land previously used for agricultural purposes. His idea is to use the algae to remediate the land so that it may one day become fertile again. Enjoy! There is also a link here to Sadiqs radio interview, but please note that it is in Bengali. https://www.sbs.com.au//dr-sadiqul-awal-has-found-a-way-to

05.01.2022 Congratulations to our very own Kate Norris for winning the 2019 Excellence in Teaching: Vocational Education and Training award this week. This award recognises her professional expertise and ability to connect with students to foster and enhance their learning experiences. She fosters a collegial atmosphere with students, other educators and industry contacts and is willing to re-evaluate, adapt and make changes to meet student needs. ... Her willingness to find flexible solutions provides students with the skills and knowledge to successfully complete their studies with confidence, and be ready to embark on a variety of careers in the Agriculture Industry. Outside of Melbourne Polytechnic Kate currently holds the position of Secretary/Treasurer of the Victorian Agriculture, Horticulture, Conservation and Land Management Training Network. Her service to the wider Agriculture community is a testament to her commitment to its future prosperity. Providing students with ongoing opportunities to be involved in industry-based learning is key to its sustainability. Kate used her industry networks at the Royal Melbourne Agricultural Show to enhance learning by introducing her students to leading experts and other young farmers who were happy to encourage and challenge students to develop new ideas and techniques to solve issues that are currently affecting the industry. Well done Kate - this is well deserved recognition for all of your hard work, your colleagues and students are all very proud of you.
