25.01.2022 Hello everyone, With the outbreak and ongoing uncertainty of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we feel it is important to provide resources and ideas to ensure those who ...have communication challenges also get the information they need. Our Director, Janelle, has written a blog that includes a free communication board that you can download to help with these conversations. As Janelle says in her blog about talking to kids, "Just because you are not talking to them, it doesn’t mean they are not hearing things. The power and control for them (and for all of us) is in asking questions and talking about it." Link to blog and chat board is available here: https://janellesampson.wordpress.com//talking-to-kids-abo/ Have a good weekend everyone and take care of each other, Your friends at Two Way Street.

24.01.2022 FAQ - What is a challenging behaviour or behaviour of concern in the context of ROCC? - This was a recent discussion about selecting the Behaviours of Concern box on the Current Communication System tab. - In my opinion, a behaviour of concern is something you'd like to change or that you feel is not really appropriate for their age. It may not be a major thing yet and you may not select this as their primary mode but it's important to consider how a behaviour may be viewe...d outside of your setting. If you don't identify something as a concern, you may not think about ways you can support the person to learn a better way. - It's ok if you don't feel like it's a priority at the moment but it's still important to identify it. For a young child, something like a tantrum may not be a behaviour of concern as it's age appropriate. However if that continues as they get older, you may then flag it as a behaviour of concern and make some notes. Then, as you re-score your ROCC each year, you will be be prompted to consider this again and hopefully start to address things earlier than you may have in the past. Sometimes these things get away on us and we don’t really notice until it becomes a big problem. Better to get onto little things before they become big things. - If you do flag a behaviour of concern, consider the impact that domains such as initiation, intelligibility, complexity of language are having on communication that may be contributing to the cause of the behaviour. Sorry for the long post. There’s lots more to discuss. This is just food for thought. See more

21.01.2022 So this week was the 1 year anniversary of the launch of ROCC. Thanks to almost 100 schools and organisations across Australia who have subscribed to the ROCC. We are still updating and refining based on the valuable feedback you provide and are fuelled by the stories you share with us. (I'll post another one of these next week).... We are also streamlining the renewal process so if your ROCC is due for renewal, then carry on, we'll send information soon. Also don't forget our online training. Almost 70 people have done this already!

21.01.2022 Another great ROCC story. Adelaide West Special Education Centre have just done their 3rd ROCC assessment set. Here's what they said: "The data is great- even if students drop back it provides a really good talking point. Some students have done so well! Look at this one! We were discussing this today its because he got his own system and he has flown! And check out that data wall! We love what people are doing with ROCC. Share yours with us too.

18.01.2022 I will be contacting some of you individually where we've already had conversations about how you use your ROCC data but if you are happy to answer a few questions that I can collate with other school groups for this presentation, I'd love to hear from you. Please comment here or email me at [email protected] and I'll send you out just a few questions - nothing onerous. I'm more excited about how the ROCC is used by others than the ROCC itself, so would love your help to share. J

17.01.2022 Now is a good time to score the ROCC for your students & clients! If your students will be away from school or you may not be seeing clients for a little while, then now is a good time to capture their current skills. It can act a bit like a handover back to yourself :) Use the ROCC to make sure skills and strategies aren’t forgotten. In the notes section for each domain, write examples to remember the way they do things, or the set up required. You can also list any action...s you’d like to follow up when you next see them. Right now is a really important time to have a measure of communicative competence. Some will thrive at home, and others may struggle without school or regular social interaction. At least if you have a current measure, you can quickly springboard into action when things get back to some kind of normal - whatever and whenever that may be. Take care everyone and keep ROCCin'

16.01.2022 We just got some great feedback from the team Black Mountain School !! It makes me happy when I see that ROCC is helping people to do great stuff. The actual assessment is only the starting point. It's how you plan from there that makes the difference. Thanks to their team for sharing. "I wanted to share with you our 2019 ROCC journey here at BMS. We have assessed all students in the school (Term 3) and analysed the data with some focus areas for 2020 (Term 4). It has been so useful and given us such a focus and strategy to move forwards (with data) that we had been missing for years!" BMS team.

16.01.2022 Today is International Day of People with Disability. Many disabilities can impact on a person's ability to communicate. Today is an important day for us to celebrate the achievements of our students and clients, and promote awareness, understanding and acceptance in the community. Please share and help us to spread the word!

15.01.2022 Do you need to help others understand the ROCC? Here's some information to share with your team or management. https://www.roccassessment.com.au//11/12/so-what-is-the-r/

15.01.2022 Just sharing this from TWS to help the transition back to school.

14.01.2022 Anyone getting this image on login? The most likely problem is that you are using Internet Explorer (IE) for your browser. This is an old web browser and we are not able to support use of ROCC on IE. It's so problematic and old. We are trying to support MS Edge but even that has problems at time. If possible, use Chrome if you can!! Other browsers also seem ok but IE is definitely problematic.

13.01.2022 Some lovely feedback from our ROCC presentation at Closing the Gap Conference. "I usually groan at the idea of assessing AAC. We so rarely evaluate what we THINK we are evaluating! We so rarely evaluate for the purpose of improving our support and instruction. Not this time! This session was fantastic. The ROCC is a brilliant tool and will open the eyes of many teams who labour under the illusion their student is making improvements without learning competencies that matter for life. I loved hearing your thinking behind how it was developed, and how the profile fosters conversation and learning with the whole team. You've really married the concepts of AAC competencies, communication partner competencies, and authentic assessment."

09.01.2022 Does your client or student have the right PODD or page set on their device? - One of the key considerations when selecting which PODD or the complexity of a page set is the person’s language level. - In Domain 6 - Complexity of Language, a person on the cusp of level 2-3 where they are combining words or they are at level 2 and ready to move to level 3, then consider that you may need to make sure they have access to language at a level that allows them to expand their me...ssages. - Ie. Do they have ‘a system that meets their needs today and tomorrow’? - Are you able to model word combinations so that they can learn them? - If they are expressively combining words on a 16 or 20 location PODD (for a range of messages), maybe it’s time to move them to a 2 or 3 page opening book so that you can model more word combinations and expand their language. - However, if they still have limited pragmatic functions, then you may need to stay on the 1 page opening book and focus on this area first. - It will be different for each individual, but this is just something to think about and discuss with your team. 03.01.2022 Exciting news...we've been working hard and there are a few fun things coming out soon. The first one is Online training for the 3 hour basic ROCC training. This will be available within a couple of weeks so you no longer need to wait for a webinar or face to face training. The training has recorded presentations and also a selection of questions asked by participants of other sessions so that you can learn from the examples that others share. Stay tuned, other practice v...ideos are coming this term, and a ROCC facelift is also on the way with a cool new Help file. The training link will be available on our website soon and I'll post here too as soon as it's available.

03.01.2022 AAC Chat this Friday - free! Be sure to check time zone.

03.01.2022 This was recorded a while ago but still relevant. Thanks AGOSCI for the opportunity to chat about AAC and the ROCC with my buddy, Haylee Parfett.

02.01.2022 Today's featured domain discussion is #2. "To own an efficient and individualised communication system (often including more than one tool) with appropriate vocabulary to meet current and future communication requirements". Consider this... As a person using AAC develops their language skills, they will likely need their system to develop with them. Consider that someone may score 4 or 5 at first assessment if they own a comprehensive and individualised system that meets their needs. But... as their language develops and they are now learning to combine words more readily, their score may drop (since the system no longer meets their current and future needs). This indicates the need to update their system. Something to think about!
