23.01.2022 We all need ballast when sailing in the great ocean of Life. (That is the weight at the bottom of a boat that keeps it upright even though it is buffeted by waves and acted on by gusts and gales.) This ballast is the principle of weight underside that we practice in Ki Aikido. It's embodied philosophy. Not only is it almost impossible for others to lift us, but we are able to right ourselves more easily in Life.
22.01.2022 Our new dojo is Brookside College's gym in central Caroline Springs, Wed evenings / Sunday mornings. Ages 8 - adult. Brookside students and their families at reduced fees. We now have three veteran blackbelts to help you progress.
21.01.2022 Aikido is different to martial arts that focus solely on beating others. At Brookside College assembly, four young aikidoka demonstrated how to confidently throw an aggressor without the need for strength and also how to receive throws safely. In Aikido, it is not about winning or losing, stronger and weaker. Honing each other through honest practice means both become more effective True in life, too.
20.01.2022 This is a little belated, but back at the beginning of May, Mark, Richard & I headed north to Kashiwaya Sensei's seminar, hosted by Aikido Cairns. Mark and Richard earnt their first dan black belt and I my third dan. Thank you to my teacher, Roby Sensei for the intensive week of preparation beforehand!
19.01.2022 On Thursday night, we had four recognition ceremonies (this is what they really are, more than 'gradings.') Christian, Benedict and Onel, a.k.a. 'Neil' demonstrated in front of parents and their fellow Aikidoka that they have attained Shokyu - the beginning level in mind / body unity and 5th kyu in Ki Aikido. Their efforts, particularly in the last month or so, led to polished performances and they should be congratulated on their efforts. 19.01.2022 Thank you to everyone for LIKING our page and my posts, especially if you are doing Aikido or the posts encourage you to pursue positive ways. Let us be honest with each other, though. If you are only ‘interested’ or ‘like’ Aikido or Ki and do not practise it, it is mere fleeting fancy and you know nothing of martial arts. First lesson, be decisive and get to the dojo. Circumstances may divert the warrior for a time, but heroes share one thing: they ACT & keep on TURNING UP over time and they do not quit their paths of heart. Do not expect others’ help, but help is there for you if you ACT.
16.01.2022 Private tutelage: better results in a shorter time concentrate on the aspects YOU desire - weapons, Ki development, self defence, meditation individualised program for practice between lessons come to the fully equipped dojo or the instructor comes to you flexible timetable for shift-workers, people who travel lessons for people with individual needs - elders / folks who need a modified Aikido program for their physicality [ 30 more words ] http://www.aikidomelbourne.com/2018/01/private-tutelage/
13.01.2022 Most of us probably operate on assumptions about ‘heroes’ and legends and thinking that these people were ideals and without flaws. One of my favourite stories to tell my students is that of Jirocho, student of the great swordmaster, Yamaoka Tesshu. As far as I remember the tale, Jirocho, reputed to be undefeated, has a duel with a samurai who does not know much about sword technique, but has a very strong Ki projection. Jirocho recognises this and calls off the duel, sure th...at he will be cut if he tries to attack. Upon returning to his master, he confides that it is not that he always wins, but that he knows when he cannot win. All these years, I had the image of a clean, young samurai hero of honour and incredible insight into Ki. I looked him up on the Net last night oh, what a surprise! Turns out he was a yakuza and gambler who later became more respectable in society. His expression is very different to my image, too! Hardly embodies what Tohei Sensei was talking about: soft eyes, bright demeanour
12.01.2022 Well of course it has to be Star Wars! Everyone at Inaka dojo and the Brookside class and their families are invited to join us this coming Sunday morning. The movie starts at 10 am, so let's meet in front of the Reading Cinema, inside Melton's Woodgrove shopping centre at 9.45. 05.01.2022 2017 could easily be called "The Year of the Teenager" in our dojo's twelve year history. More than ever before, we have had a cohort of keen adolescents join up and decide they really like Aikido and tomorrow night is going to be their first grading night - I think 'Recognition Ceremony' is a better word for it, as people who present have already proven their dedication and prowess in the lead up to the night.
