10.01.2022 This is an article by AIR Darwin President Ken Moffitt: Please read and comment below..... The NEW Franking Credit Issue By Ken Moffitt 16 September 2020 Whilst self-funded retirees struggle with dwindling superannuation balances and a dramatic crash in income, due to low interest rates and reduced or cancelled dividends, the federal government has received a financial windfall AT OUR EXPENSE.... Since February and the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, many of Australia’s leading companies, especially the big four banks and Telstra, have either significantly reduced or cancelled their dividends (or part of them). These stocks have been popular with retirees for many years, providing strong and steady income. However, the reduction or cancellation of dividends in the 2019/20 financial year, has had a second and equally dramatic financial effect on retirees. When dividends are cancelled, so are the franking credits. Having just completed my SMSF accounts for the 2019/20 year, I have uncovered a 48% drop in dividends and a 54% drop in franking credit rebates. Some of this will be attributable to a small pull back in exposure to Australian shares, but many people/funds are likely to see a significant reduction in franking rebates of 40% or more. The federal government has already received the tax associated with the franked dividends being distributed by companies, normally in prior years. The difference now is that they are not having to pay out (or have them offset against other taxes) as in previous years. It has been estimated that $8 billion would have been paid (prior to Covid-19) in cash refunds on franking credits in the 2019/20 tax year (source-AAP FactCheck-based on a statement by Senator Keneally-30Apr19), but the savings will be even higher. Reduced franking credits for Industry and Retail super funds and high wealth individuals will result in a higher superannuation contribution and personal income taxes, increasing the government windfall. 40% of all of that is a lot of money. With self-funded retirees suffering to such a degree with reduced incomes and zero assistance from the government, why haven’t the federal government moved to extend financial assistance to independent retirees. 10.01.2022 Great to have three MLA's for our NT Election debate, with Nicole Manison, Lia Finocchiaro and Jeff Collins presenting their policies and in particular their Seniors policies. Some good questions from the floor in our special face-to-face AND Zoom meeting on 10 August. Pizzas afterwards weren't bad either. Great night.
