25.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Sorry to inform you but there will be no flying today as I am unable to get my chickens out off their pen before heading for the airport. Sorry for any inconvenience. OH! AND THE WEATHER

25.01.2022 Hi Aviators, a quick message to let you know Im back in MUDGEE. All it did was blow so no fishing. Had an opportunity to get back yesterday without getting blown to New Zealand and started to get pretty bored. Let me know if you want to fly on the weekend.

24.01.2022 Great to se some of my original students back in the air. Well done today paul for renewing your Biannual Flight Review. Your now free to fly like a bird again.

24.01.2022 Wow what a beautiful sight flying today. Not only that it was as smooth as silk. Winter is the best time to learn to fly. Come on have a go.

24.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Round 1 pilot of the year This Saturday from 12pm Exercise: 1. Your flying at a height of 4,000 feet when all of a sudden the engine fails. What do you do.... 2. Youre coming back to an unfamiliar airport. How do you join a circuit. 3. What a day for the Jab. You join base and find the flaps dont work. You are being assessed from when you walk towards the aircraft for your turn. If the weather turns then there will be 3 theory assessments. First in best dressed. Price is .6 at private hire rate. Talk soon and Safe flying

24.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Quick reminder that Pilot of The Year Round 2 is this afternoon.

22.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Its that time of month again for Round 2 of Pilot of the year 2019. This Saturday from 12pm. If you cant make you can do it when you can make it. Every one is a winner just from the experience. Getting a trophy at the end of the year for the highest points is just a bonus. EXERCISE: A planned flight from YMDG- YSCN at A055 (5,500) 1. You have checked the weather which you will download before hand and bring it with you. You will explain it to me in the plane. ...(Download from Airservices not Elders, weather zone or the likes. They are not actuate enough) 2. You take off from the airport and make an upwind departure. 5nm out the weather deteriorated to a point where you are now in cloud. I put you under the hood. I will be your eyes outside the aircraft but you will still fly the plane and talk on the radio. I will give you headings to fly to get out of trouble. GIVE YOURSELF AN UPPER CUT FOR GETTING INTO THIS SITUATION. Providing you live. 3. When you think things cant get any worse, you break free of cloud in the circuit area with still very high humidity, the engine completely stops. What will you do? Because you are so stressed by flying into cloud you dont realise that the engine started to run rough. 2nd UPPERCUT FOR THE DAY. Private hire rates. First in best dressed. Let me know if you are attending. Good luck Safe flying

22.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Tuesdays quiz, Why do I want the oil in the engine of the Jabiru on the bottom half of the crosses on the dip stick when I check it of a morning and why is the viscosity of the oil so important, especially in winter?

22.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Its been a long time coming and we missed 2018. PILOT OF THE YEAR IS BACK ON for 2019. Starting 12pm on the Saturday 29th June. For all level of experience pilots of Airwest Flight Training. It is a competition of 3 exercises. It may compile of theory, flying or both. The exercises will be given to you the Monday prior to the event. Rain, hail, snow or shine. At the moment you will probably get the lot on the same day. It is great experience. You only get charged for .6 of an hour at private hire rates. There are 6 events in a year and the scores are tallied up at the end of the year. The winner gets theIr name on the Sam Bateman memorial trophy ( which is a huge honour) as well as other prizes. This will be presented at the end of year presentation night. All competitors are winners though.

21.01.2022 Not a bump and smooth as silk. Fishes here I come

18.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Why stop at weekly quizzes? Heres your next question: This has bought many a pilot unstuck Atmospheric density is a measure of the mass of air contained in a given volume. What are 3 sections of a aircraft that air density strongly affects and why?... Ill give you till Tuesday night when I will give the next question. Safe flying all

18.01.2022 No body swimming or water skiing in Burrandong Dam today, softies

17.01.2022 An other pilot get his wings. Well done Jonathan for getting you pilots licence.

16.01.2022 2 CAT heads amongst the pigeons some with a CAT biennial the other with a CAT cap

16.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Answer to Fridays quiz, Well done all and great answers. Vertical speed indicator would also remain isolated from the ambient air. No further pressure changes would be transferred to the instrument. It would continue to read zero no matter what the aircraft did. A blocked pitot tube would render the Airspeed indicator unserviceable, but would have no effect on any other instrument.... Next quiz is Tuesday Safe flying

15.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Fridays quiz At 6000feet the pitot becomes blocked, but the static vent is still clear. On descent the VSI (vertical speed indicator) shows what and why?

15.01.2022 How about this. You can have an pilots licence before you can drive a car. Well Josh Hills did that today. After a lot of hard work and determination Josh did this today. Well done Josh.

14.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Unless you’re still asleep, you haven’t looked outside yet or you just want some real excitement in your life which you would most certainly get a write up in the paper. Unfortunately the Pilot Of the Year completion round 3 has been cancelled for obvious reasons. Unfortunately I will be away for the next 2 weekends so I will let you know when it will be run. Safe flying or should I say driving.

14.01.2022 Theres a view of Barrington tops

14.01.2022 Bit different to when I tried to go this way yesterday. I had to turn back. Its beautiful up here today.

13.01.2022 Hi Aviators, There were some very close and good answers. The answer to the quiz. The take-off is not considered complete until the lowest part of the aeroplane is 50 feet above the runway surface and the aircraft has achieved a speed which will ensure that adequate control will exist in the event of a sudden and complete engine failure. This speed is known as Vtoss, it is published in the aircrafts takeoff chart and is usually not less than 1.2 times the power-off stall spe...ed in the take-off configuration. Youre right with Vtos but I want pilots to understand it is not only speed but must have control off the aircraft. Hence why I am so particular in relation to EFATO engine, failure, after take, off. Hope you learnt something. See more

13.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Thanks for everyone who turned up yesterday for round one of Pilot Of The Year. A great day had by all. Lets not wait till Tuesday. Its winter and it gets cold up there. You lose 2 degrees every 1,000 feet. There is a white thing on top of the dash and a white card with a yellow spot which play an important part in flying. QUIZ... The possibility of carbon monoxide being introduced into the environment of the cabin is most likely when? Let you know the answer on Tuesday night. See more

12.01.2022 6 hr drive or 1hour 20min to Taree. And a view like this. I know what I prefer. You too can do this if you learn to fly. Fishing here I come

09.01.2022 Hi Aviators, The Answer to Tuesdays quiz most of you got right. If there is a crack in the exhaust where the heat exchanger is connected you will get carbon monoxide into the cabin. You wont smell it as it is colourless and odourless. If the alarm come one, open all vents, shut off the cabin heat and land. QUIZ FOR TODAY: It has to do with something I always babble on about. An aircraft flying directly from a high pressure system to a low pressure system will experience what?

08.01.2022 6 hr drive or 1hour 20min to Taree. And a view like this. I know what I prefer. You too can do this if you learn to fly. Fishing here I come

08.01.2022 Hi Future Pilots, If you are after that hard to get Father’s Day present, I have gift vouchers available. $99. For about 40 minutes flight. Very hands on.

08.01.2022 People say to me, dont you worry when you get out of an aircraft and let a student go solo? My answer to that question is, no. If I had any doubts I wouldnt be getting out of the aircraft. This was the case today when Jonathan Bennett went solo today. Well done Jonno. A great mile stone and a day you will never forget.

08.01.2022 Good evening Aviators of Airwest Flight Training Here is a quiz that I am running every Tuesday. Please reply with an answer if you wish. I will give the answer on Friday night. Q. When has an airplane completed its take-off?... See how you go.

08.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Round 3/19 Pilot of the Year competition is on this weekend. Exercise: 1. Fly to the training area and climb to 3,500. I want a 360deg turn. 1 at 30deg, 1 at 45deg and a rate 1 turn. I will give you a 5deg tolerance at tuning onto the same heading you started on. Must still be at 3,500. 2. Join a circuit properly on the downwind leg. 3. On short final a kangaroo comes onto the runway and just sits there. What do you do?... Flying at private hire rates. Starts at around 12pm Saturday. First in best dressed Let me know if your attending

07.01.2022 A beautiful arvo for a fly to Dubbo to do my BFR. Thanks Troy Thomas of Thomas aviation for an enjoyable afternoon.

06.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Due to unforeseen circumstance, round 3/19 of Pilot of the year has to be put back a week to Saturday 7th September.

05.01.2022 Hi Aviators, With a day like in the photo, 21deg at 4,000 feet whats the chance of something happening and what? Shshshshshsh Paul Cavalier and Will Bateman.

05.01.2022 An other pilot get his wings. Well done Jonathan for getting you pilots licence.

04.01.2022 What a beautiful day for a fly. This is Hamish enjoying his second flight lesson, straight and level flight. Why dont you come out and have a go. A trial introductory flight is just $99.

04.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Quiz time. 1. Frost is simply frozen dew. With an aircraft kept outside overnight, frost can form on the top surfaces of the aircraft. If not removed before flight, what can happen? 2. What is backing and veering in relation to weather?

04.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Dont forget Pilot of the year comp 1 tomorrow. Answer to Tuesdays quiz: First off viscosity is best defined as the body of the oil, the oils resistance to flow. When it is cold it is thick and resists flowing and is known as high viscosity. When it is warm it flows and spreads much more easily, it has low viscosity. This is why I like to change the oil after Ive flown it and not before. If it was cold a lot would stay in the engine. Oil can not lubricate the e...ngine properly until it has reached the correct temperature. This is why I dont take off until to oil temperature is over 100deg also run ups over 80 ( cold engine, cold life). Low viscosity is needed to flow over all the small clearances, bearings and cylinders. The most majority of engine wear occurs in the first few minutes after start up. Be kind to the engine after start up. No high revving. Oil pressure not only depends on the size of the oil pump but also the ability of the liquid to flow. Pressure produced by the oil pump depends upon the viscosity of the oil and the size of the clearances which it has to travel. If oil temp gets to high it flows to easy causing oil pressure to drop. When it is cold it resists the flow and the pressure increases. In summary, The oil: lubricates moving parts. Reduces friction and energy loss and prevents excessive wear and damage It cools carting heat away to the oil cooler It cleans sludge and other residue from moving parts It seals spaces between cylinder walls and piston rings It protects metal components of the engine from oxygen, water etc and acts as a cushion between surfaces. To much oil in the Jab and it increases oil pressure and it is forced out past the oil rings and seals. It could protentially cause damage and also wastes it. Most of all, LOOK AFTER YOUR ENGINE AND TREAT IT KINDLY!

03.01.2022 What a beautiful day for a fly. This is Hamish enjoying his second flight lesson, straight and level flight. Why don’t you come out and have a go. A trial introductory flight is just $99.

02.01.2022 Hi Aviators, Well done to all who had a go at the last quiz, Here is the answer: When a given volume of air contains a large number of molecules, the density is said to be high. When the same volume contains fewer molecules, the density is said to be low. Air density strongly affects such things as:- 1) The lift produced at any true airspeed... 2) The engine power produced at any throttle setting 3) The thrust produced by the propeller at any given RPM. So in other words, the wings, engine and the propeller (which is a rotating wing). The result is that relatively small change in the ambient density produces a very dramatic change in aircraft performance. This reduction in performance is most noticeable during take-off and climb. Hence in summer it takes a lot longer to take-off. Hence also why I teach my student how to work out air density. This also affects your car engine. Hope you all learnt something and do more reading on the subject. Next quiz tomorrow night.

02.01.2022 Hi Aviators, I was half expecting this to come through during the night but here it comes. THE RAIN, THE RAIN. Knowing your weather is so important as an aviator. With navigation you have GPS, electronic navigational maps, all kinds of things to help you from getting lost BUT not knowing your weather will kill you in a flash. Here is the front coming through. You see this start looking at a place to land FAST.
