24.01.2022 [My Sponsor] shared that we can be caring without being caretakers. We can allow our loved ones to do the things they can and should be doing for themselves. We can even allow them to experience the consequences of their choices. I truly believe that if it had not been for that pamphlet [‘To Parents of Alcoholics’] and that Sponsor, I would not have the loving relationship with my son that I have today. I was able to let go with loving care, set boundaries that worked for me... and my sanity, and not take ownership of his consequences. He had a rough road and suffered some painful consequences at times, but today he’s walking a more peaceful path. Because I’ve learned how to mind my business and not his, we are enjoying walking on this path together. I owe that to Al-Anonit works. . . Minding My Business, Not His, The Forum, April 2019 . . 23.01.2022 Today, I grieve both the love I lost and the life I had hoped would be. Yet with the help of Al-Anon, my grief comes from a place of beauty and peace rather than one of darkness and toxicity. I have compassion for both my husband and myself, knowing that we were two imperfect people who loved each other as best we could in the face of horrific circumstances. 22.01.2022 I had been on the fence about whether or not to end the marriage for about seven years, but I did not have the clarity I needed yet; so, I made the most of a difficult situation It took a lot of time to see that things werent improving and that what my [Al-Anon] Sponsor shared was truesome people never stop drinking. I had hoped that my husband would want sobriety for himself, but he didnt. I finally experienced my moment of clarity when just one time too many my husband... called me crap in front of my children, and I could no longer explain it away by telling them, Daddy is sick.My denial had finally broken. That night I was finally ready to give myself and my kids what I had wanted for so longa sober household. After Much Trying The Forum, April 2020 This Al-Anon members marriage ended in divorce, but this is not the case for all members. Some stay with their alcoholic spouse, even when the drinking persists. There is no right way. Everyone is entitled to decide what works for them. 21.01.2022 When I met my husband, I was attracted to his charm. We married and had a son and a daughter. I thought I had the perfect family. However, after ten years of marriage, my husbands behavior began to change. He became more dependent on alcohol and slowly lessened his involvement with the family. I didnt know him anymore, but I tried to do everything possible to be a good wife. He began slacking off his responsibilities with work, home, family, and friends. I began doing thin...gs for him so that no one would know our family secret. As he continued to drink more and more, I kept hoping he would change for the children and me. We endured crisis after crisis, and I became the person between the children and their father. . . 20.01.2022 To me, [Al-Anons] Step Three is a powerful commitment to change. Although I perceived myself to be a good decision maker, in truth, I let other people make decisions for me for many years of my life. I followed the rules and did what I thought good girls are supposed to dolisten to outside messages from others about how to make decisions. However, this did not produce the happiness I thought it would. Instead, most of the time, I felt anxious and afraid of what might happe...n next. In working Step Three, I became aware that I needed to make a decision and that no one else could make it for me I had to decide to change the direction in which I was looking for happiness. . . 20.01.2022 Feeling that my life was spiraling out of control because of my husband, I tried to get a grip on it by seizing control of my husbands life. I became his social director, deciding what activities he could engage in and when. I became his spokesperson, answering for him when anyone spoke to him. Even if he replied, I would still answer for him, acting as though he hadnt given the correct answer. I scolded, wept, threatened, fantasized, and spent every waking hour planning a...nd trying to control, but nothing worked. He still drank, still went to bars, still eluded my control. . . 20.01.2022 I came into Al-Anon shortly after my husband and I had been married for ten years. I had tried everything to get him to stop drinking. He didn’t, and he died of liver failure at age 45. I was angry, hurt, lonely, resentful, and confused. I was in a persistent state of anxiety because I had to raise two children alone, and we had very little money. 18.01.2022 When I first began my journey in Al-Anon, my focus was on my husband, his new-found sobriety in A.A., and our young children Once I started working the Steps with my Sponsor, I experienced a feeling of emptiness that only began to go away when I started to take a look at the roots of the family disease of alcoholism in myself. It didnt start with my husband, but rather the home in which I grew up. Looking at the Roots of My Disease, The Forum February 2019... Is there a history of alcoholism in your family? 15.01.2022 I grew up in an alcoholic home in which there were no boundaries. One of the boundaries that was missing in our home was having the right to say or do something without someone else always correcting or making comments and judgments. I never learned what was my business and what was not. Now that I am a grown up with my own family, I find boundaries extremely difficult. However, thanks to [Al-Anon], I am learning that everyone is on their own journey. 14.01.2022 Ever since I was a child, I had a ringside seat to my alcoholic/addicts chaotic behavior As a result, I felt that I was a burden and a disappointment to those around me. 14.01.2022 All these defects of character have been familiar ways for me to deal with life’s problems. They have been my defense mechanisms, my comfort zone, and my survival skills. 13.01.2022 Our child was maintaining sobriety, but I was getting more and more obsessed and was getting hit with self-doubt, guilt and shame. I was literally knocked down by the disease, but some of the parents in our group started talking about AlAnon and so I went. 12.01.2022 Through Al-Anon I have recently become aware of how abusive I have been as a result of living in an alcoholic situation. In my own fears, as well as insecurities and frustrations at not being able to control the alcoholic, I have lashed out verbally at my children in name calling, in irrational hysterics over something as simple as a spilled glass of milk, or in rigid demands for perfect performance. 12.01.2022 Before Al-Anon I was so sure I could fix both my marriage and my husband. I tried self-help books, couples counseling, and womens shelters. I thought about Al-Anon, but I denied that alcoholism was the whole problem. I was ashamed of our marriage, but we put on an act for family and made it look like all was happy. I blamed my husband for all our problems. I thought I knew so much because I hadnt come from an alcoholic family, whereas he had. Eventually, I couldnt take hi...s abuse anymore. 11.01.2022 [My Al-Anon Sponsor] got me started on the Steps and started to help me put the focus back on me. At first, I thought she wasnt listening to me because all my stories started with, he said, or he did. She would say, How do you feel about it? or What are you going to do differently? When I protested, she would say, I heard you, but Im not sponsoring him, Im sponsoring you. That was startling to me, but little by little, she helped me put the magnifying lens down ...and pick up the mirror. And guess what? 10.01.2022 I felt very lonely growing up in alcoholism. I knew nothing about the disease. I only knew that Mom was a little wacky. 06.01.2022 Today lets think about our intentions. The word will suggest to many of us the vast gap between what we intend to do and what we actually do. We intend to be kind and tolerant, but some uncontrollable impulse changes our attitude into something we later find ourselves regretting. We intend to accomplish so much, but unless we start out with a realistic estimate of what we are capable of doing, we fall far short of our expectations. We intend to make a good life for ourselve...s and our families, but we seem constantly to be deflected from it by others. Or we permit the actions of others to prevent us from fulfilling what we hoped to do. One Day at a Time in Al-Anon, p. 363 Al-Anon is a Twelve Step program for the families and friends of alcoholics. 05.01.2022 An AlAnon member once said that the wordresponsibility, when divided, actually means our ability to respond to our own needs and to the needs of those around us. Years of living with active alcoholism hamstring most of us so that we are unable to respond; we simply react. Many of us confuse our responsibilities to others with a feeling of having to be responsible for everyone and everything that happens. The result is distorted relationships with family and friends. ...An honest look at our responsibilities can help to increase our selfesteem and to improve those relationships that add so much meaning to our lives. 03.01.2022 We pray for sobriety for the alcoholic because we believe this will solve all our problems. This is an illusion. Sobriety is only the first step in building a good life. Unless we both work to overcome the emotional conflicts within ourselves, we remain at a standstill. Our troubles only take new forms because they did not stem from alcoholism, but from the personality flaws that caused the alcoholism and from our irrational reactions to them. Even when the alcoholic has con...quered the compulsion to drink, I must remember that I have much to learn about adjusting to the sober alcoholic. One Day at a Time in Al-Anon (p. 15) Al-Anon members come together every week for support and to find ways to deal with living with an alcoholic family member or friend even if sobriety is present. 03.01.2022 I found myself sinking further and further into depression as I tried to make sense of and control what was happening in my marriage and in our home. Over time, I was able to break my childhood definition of what an alcoholic wasa jobless derelict who lacks good hygiene, living a solitary life without friends, family or money. I realized that it was also the man I loved and married. He was a good provider who was personable, well educated, good looking and much loved by fam...ily and friends. However, his daily drinking and personality changes mystified me and left me feeling that there must be something I had done to cause them or that I could do to control or cure them. A Second Chance at My Marriage, The Forum November 2018 Many people think that their loved one drinks because of something they did or didnt do. This is not true. In Al-Anon, members come to realize that the only person who can stop the drinking is the alcoholic. With that in mind, members can begin to focus on what they can control themselves.
