24.01.2022 Bandcamp Friday starts in a few ours. Here's a new page from some of our friends in Brazil. Great Brazilian jazz and instrumental music. https://nucleocontemporaneo.bandcamp.com/
24.01.2022 I've been a bit slack on the ol' youtube lately. Now that grant-writing season is over, I'll get back into it. Might be time for me to post a few drum lessons. What would you like to see? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvGmphfNhtI
22.01.2022 Quite often at this time of year I find myself as the token percussionist amongst a very fine group of guitarists in the MCM Guitar Perspectives program. No room for triangle this year, but lots of great recordings from the gang. Here's Paul Carey flying the flag for the north side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ooi9bKFu2Cs
21.01.2022 Always nice to get a treat in the post! Congratulations to Anthony for putting together such a great book. A must-have for any drummer who plays brushes. And a lovely forward written by Darryn Farrugia. https://phrasingandfreedomwithbrushes.com/
21.01.2022 One for my drum students. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnoUqr3IlPw

20.01.2022 Some great playing from Rafael Toledo and Roberto!
19.01.2022 I saw this group in Sao Paulo many years ago. Somehow I didn't end up buying their CD (what an oversight!). https://www.youtube.com/watch
18.01.2022 Here's Rose with a great performance as part of the MCM Guitar Perspectives online festival.
17.01.2022 Apparently, Trio Agogo have a new album out...
16.01.2022 More great work from Josh Bennett on the Nature of Sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlizHWYpBB0
16.01.2022 With no gigs, no plays, no comedy clubs and so forth, there is quite a bit of debate around whether or not artists should be doing free online concerts and the like. There is a strong, and well justified, movement against endless free content. While I broadly agree with that, I want to instead take a positive action stance here. While musicians would love for lots of people to buy their albums, it is also the case that many music lovers are now unemployed. So what can w...e do to support artists when we may not be in a great financial position ourselves? Well, I want this thread to highlight some of the ways we can help each other. Firstly, join the mailing lists of artists. You don't have to open every email, but artists shouldn't be slaves to facebook and the like in order to reach their own audience. You shouldn't be relying on an algorithmic fluke for an artist to reach you on facebook! Let them contact you directly. Most artists are not spamming you. Subscribe to artists on youtube. Not only is it good for their ego, but it actually helps them monetize their youtube videos and get a wider range of youtube creator options. Like and share their videos. Share and recommend what you love with your friends! Maybe you can't afford the latest album, but your friends can. Help artists reach more people while the venues are closed. If artists are offering new avenues, get engaged. There are a lot of artists offering online classes that they didn't previously. When all else fails, ask an artist how you can support their work. You might not be in a position to be generous financially, but you can help people who really need it right now.
16.01.2022 Chick Webb was one of the most important drummers in the first half of the 20th Century. As a child he contracted tuberculosis of the spine, but in his relatively short life he made a massive impact on the world of jazz and drumming. Even as his health declined, he kept his band going through the Great Depression. That band was one of the finest of the 1930s. https://scottkfish.com//the-secrets-of-chick-webbs-drummi/
14.01.2022 The construction of a good practice method is very important. Is the thing that you think works best actually the best? https://christine-carter.com//making-the-most-of-your-hou/

09.01.2022 Playing choro at Open Studio tonight (Sat) with Max Rudd and Yael Zamir. Lots of Pixinguinha and other classics! 9pm start. 204 High St, Northcote.
08.01.2022 James Brown was in his 70s when I saw him live, and he was still doing the splits on stage!
07.01.2022 Airto continues to be a massive influence on my music, but in particular, he was my first major Brazilian music influence. When I got his instructional videos (on VHS, no less!), I spent months immersed in the material. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfzO0bBIPWM
06.01.2022 Josh has been doing some great work on his youtube channel. Here's the latest bit on the science of sound...
05.01.2022 Bandcamp Friday again! All proceeds go straight to the artists. It's Friday PST, so it finishes at 5pm on Saturday in AEST. All our albums are on there, and you can find plenty more from our friends. This is one of the best ways to support musicians who have been unable to perform for months now. https://panoramabrasil.bandcamp.com/

05.01.2022 The candidates in the US election can wait - Bandcamp Friday can't! Support the artists, not the shareholders. https://alastairkerrquartet.bandcamp.com/

02.01.2022 Lots of cool stuff coming up, including the recording of the next Panorama Brasil album. Next cab of the rank though will be the debut of the Australian Brazilian Ensemble at the Jazz Lab on Jan 22. I have even taken the time to update my website!
