24.01.2022 As spring begins to near, skin allergies will rear their unpleasant heads too. Allergy treatment in dogs has come a long way, and with such a range of new treatments available, relief is conveniently at hand. Allergies are best treated before a flare-up becomes severe, so if you start to notice your pup with red skin, pustules or increased scratching, make an appointment with us today. Prevention is always better than cure.

24.01.2022 Clockwise from top left: "Frankie'', "Bonnie" "Oreo", "Zuma" and "Arlo". Class graduated 30/7/20. What a great group of pups, well done everyone!

24.01.2022 While soothing may not be the first thought that comes to mind when we talk about bathing your dog, certain baths really CAN be soothing for dogs! For dogs with dry or irritable skin, the use of gentle, veterinary-recommended topical products can really help settle their discomfort. Depending on your pet’s particular issue, we may recommend shampoos or conditioners with moisturising ingredients to hydrate and strengthen your dog’s skin barrier, emollients to smooth the skin surface, or soothing additives. Have a chat with us today to find the best products for your pet!

23.01.2022 When was the last time you gave your pet’s mouth a check-up? Even minor dental disease can increase the risk of kidney, heart disease and other whole-body problems. Signs of dental disease include: bad breath, stained teeth, drooling, facial swelling, difficulty eating and pain when touching the lips or face. If your pet hasn’t been in for a mouth check-up lately, call us to make an appointment today.

23.01.2022 ‘Lewis’, ‘Bruce’, ‘Ace’, ‘Callie’ & ‘Sam’. Graduated Puppy Preschool 23/09/2020 Well done everyone, you should all be super proud of your pups

23.01.2022 Have you ever seen our vets take samples from your pet’s irritated skin or ears? This can involve swabbing or collecting surface material using sticky tape or a gentle scraping technique. These samples are examined under the microscope for parasites that can trigger skin or ear problems (such as mites), or an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast that can worsen any allergy-related skin problems. As a result, we can better diagnose your pet’s issue and recommend the most effective treatment to quickly fix their irritating problem!

22.01.2022 Just like cats and dogs, rabbits also need to have regular vaccinations to protect them from the potentially-fatal rabbit calicivirus disease. This calicivirus disease causes rabbits internal bleeding but luckily vaccinating is a simple way to keep your bunny protected. Depending on the age of your rabbit, it’s best to chat with one of our team to find out how often rabbit vaccinations are required.

22.01.2022 Hot weather can cause your pet to suffer dangerous heat stress. Pets are at higher risk if they have a snub-nose, thick fur or pre-existing respiratory issues, or if they’re overweight. In hot weather, ensure your pet has shade and cool water, and avoid vigorous exercise. Don’t leave them in a car unless they’re supervised and have air-conditioning. If your pet seems weak, dull, drooling excessively or panting heavily after being in the heat, soak them with cool water and phone us urgently for advice.

21.01.2022 Pets can suffer from adverse food reactions (commonly known as food allergies), which can be developed from certain proteins, even ones your pet has eaten for a long time! Food allergies can cause recurrent skin or ear irritations or gut upset. In pets showing suspicious symptoms, a correctly-performed hypoallergenic dietary trial is often a necessary step to confirm the issue. If your pet shows frequent skin or gut discomfort signs, book them in for an appointment today for further assessment and advice.

21.01.2022 Spring means slugs and snails in our gardens. Although it can be tempting to reach for snail bait as a quick remedy to unwelcome garden guests, snail bait contains metaldehyde or methiocarb, which, if ingested by your dog or cat, makes it deadly. As snail baits are formulated to attract snails with ingredients like molasses, many dogs can find the smell attractive too. Avoid using snail bait if you have pets and, if you suspect your pet has ingested snail bait, call us immediately.

21.01.2022 ‘Nala’, ‘Daisy’ & ‘ Mikey’. Graduated 28/10/2020 (Absent ‘Max’) Congratulations everyone, you all did fantastic!!

21.01.2022 As life gets busier, the odds of your dog being left alone all day increases. Dogs are social animals, and they can experience stress and anxiety if left alone for extended periods of time. Fortunately, these strategies can be used to make the time pass more quickly for your pet.

21.01.2022 When used according to our prescribing instructions, topical steroids have a very low risk of the potential side effects that can be associated with long-term steroid tablets or injections. If your pet suffers from skin or ear irritation, book a consultation in with us today to discuss the best options for improving your pet’s comfort.

20.01.2022 If you notice your dog shaking their head, scratching their ears or giving off a bad odour from their ears, they might be suffering from an ear condition. Infections, allergies, parasites and foreign bodies can all cause ear irritation in pets, so it’s important to have your pet examined to determine what treatment may be needed. Give us a call today to keep your pet comfortable and their ears healthy.

19.01.2022 During spring and summer, sharp grass seeds (or awns) can stick in your pet’s fur and cut into their eyes, ears, paws or skin. These seeds are painful and can migrate deeply into tissues, causing inflammation and infection. Affected pets often require surgical treatment and may need specialist imaging to find any that have entered the body. Help protect your pet by weekly grooming to remove excess undercoat and ensure the fur around their paws, face and ears is kept short.

19.01.2022 Love them or leave them, magpies are an iconic Australian bird. When nesting, magpies swoop their perceived threats to protect their young. Smart enough to distinguish friend from foe, magpies may even extend their trust to you by taking some feed. Although it’s not recommended to feed wildlife, if you do, find a natural source like mealworms from a pet store, as mince and other human foods are not balanced enough for our feathered friends.

19.01.2022 If your dog or cat has a red or sore ear, or unusually smelly ear discharge, they may have an ear infection! Ear infections occur more commonly during spring and summer, due to hot/humid conditions, or underlying seasonal allergy triggers, such as pollen. Pets are also more prone if they have floppy or hairy ears, or if they swim frequently. If you think your pet is developing an ear problem, book them for a consultation with us ASAP! Ear infections are painful and are best treated early.

17.01.2022 Unfortunately, some pets may suffer from a similar allergic condition as eczema called ‘atopy’, where certain plants or substances in the environment can trigger recurrent skin/ear itchiness and inflammation. We’re familiar with a range of medications for atopy control, including newer options of daily tablets or monthly injections to reduce itchiness. When used under veterinary supervision, these treatments can provide a relatively safe and effective way of maintaining your pet’s comfort, and reducing that pesky itch! Ask our friendly team for further information!

16.01.2022 Before offering your pet any festive foods, check first that it doesn’t contain any of these potentially toxic ingredients: - Raisins, sultanas or grapes - Onions or garlic - Chocolate, cacao or caffeine - Xylitol sweetener... - Macadamia nuts Avoid giving your pet any cooked bones to gnaw on (they can put them at high risk of gut obstruction or injury), or fatty foods such as leftover ham (which can trigger pancreatitis in some animals). If you think your pet may have accidentally eaten any of these ingredients, bring your pet in to see us immediately. See more

16.01.2022 If you’re looking for a new way to keep your pooch fit, happy and stimulated, then maybe dog agility is just the activity for them. Whilst some breeds of dogs are better suited to agility, you can always give it a try with your pup to see if they enjoy it first. There are dog agility clubs that offer training and competitions, or try setting up your own agility course!

16.01.2022 In summer, exercise your dog only in the cooler early morning or late evening this protects them from heat stress or being burnt by scorching pavement. If your dog starts panting excessively or seems lethargic, place them in air-conditioning or in front of a fan, and offer them water. If your pet likes swimming, a dip in a pool under supervision can be a great way to burn off their energy whilst keeping cool!

15.01.2022 What does it take to become a dog trainer? Surprisingly, there are actually no minimum education or experience requirements to become a dog trainer, but that doesn’t mean there aren't standards of excellence in the dog training world. Look out for trainers who practice ‘force-free’ or ‘fear-free’ training, particularly if they have qualifications from a recognised training or behaviour program.

13.01.2022 Our very own Dr Malcolm Webb is participating in this year's Movember fundraiser. For the month of November, Dr Mal will be growing a 'cookie duster' to raise much-needed funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health support and suicide prevention. You can support Dr Mal's budding 'lip rug' by making a donation on his official Movember webpage: https://movember.com/m/14422397?mc=1

13.01.2022 ‘Venn’, ‘Gina’ & ‘Ziggy’ Absent: ‘Sage’ & ‘Sky’ Class Graduated 20/09/2021 Well done everyone!

13.01.2022 If you want to be a part of our team we would love to hear from you!!! We need 2 x qualified Cert IV Vet Nurses and a Kennel Hand. Send your resumes to [email protected]

13.01.2022 Fireworks can unfortunately be really scary for our pets! Before fireworks begin, bring your pet indoors to prevent panicked escape attempts. Try playing gentle music or TV sounds to help drown out noise, and close curtains or blinds to block light. Offer your pet some treats for distraction, and give them calm reassurance if they seem nervous. It helps to set up a safe den-like hiding spot for them to retreat to, preferably sprayed with calming pheromones, such as Adaptil for dogs or Feliway for cats. If you know that your pet gets very anxious with loud sounds, it’s best to book an appointment with us to discuss safe prescription anti-anxiety medications.

12.01.2022 "Milo", "Trixie", "Lucy" and "Ted" all graduated puppy preschool tonight, 2/9/21. Absent was "Chloe". Thanks everyone for a wonderful 5 weeks, congratulations to you and your puppies.

12.01.2022 Cats are incredibly good at masking their feelings, often hiding pain and stress under a cool or prickly demeanour. If you notice your cat has developed gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhoea suddenly, is overgrooming causing hair loss, or hiding or withdrawing from people more often, they may be stressed. Chronic stress is bad for your cat’s health, so if you’re concerned, give us a call today.

12.01.2022 In hot weather, protect wildlife from heat stress and dehydration by putting out shallow bowls of water in shaded areas (including up in trees). To help small animals drink safely, place some rocks into the bowl that they can climb up onto. If you find an animal that looks weak or disoriented, offer them a dish of water and some shade (e.g. an open-sided cardboard box). If they still seem unwell after thirty minutes, phone your nearest wildlife rehabilitation service or our clinic for advice.

12.01.2022 Older cats and dogs can make the best pets but that also means they require a little additional care to keep them comfy, mobile and in good health throughout their twilight years. A regular senior vet check-up is a great way for us to assess your pet’s condition and quality of life. There, we can discuss any tests, preventative treatments or ongoing management that might be needed to ensure your furry family member can stay happy and healthy. Book your pet in for a senior check-up with one of our friendly vets today.

11.01.2022 Although the arrival of spring hopefully also means the arrival of warmer weather, pets with arthritis will still require management into the warmer months and beyond. Arthritis in pets is a chronic condition requiring ongoing year-round treatment to help keep them comfortable and as active as possible. Book an arthritis check up with one of our vets today to keep your pet playful and pain free.

11.01.2022 If you’re leaving your pet home alone on Christmas Day, tire them out with some pre-emptive exercise, such as walks for dogs or toy-chasing for cats. Leave them in a cool, well-ventilated area, with bedding, water and a few toys. Ensure your pet can access toileting facilities if you’ll be gone more than three hours. It helps to spray your pet’s bedding with some calming pheromone spray (Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats). Some pets may also enjoy soft background music or TV. Keep your pet happy and occupied with a safe chew treat (such as a stuffed Kong), or a food hunt around the house. If you think your pet will be anxious without you, call us today to discuss safe anti-anxiety medication for your pet.

10.01.2022 To keep our cats and dogs healthy, their diet ideally requires a balance of wet and dry pet food, to ensure they receive all of the essential vitamins and minerals that our pets need. Just by chewing and crunching their biscuits, our pets are keeping their teeth clean and reducing their plaque build-up. For tips on occasional treats beneficial to healthy teeth, speak with us today.

10.01.2022 Installing a cat scratching post inside your home can be a great way to encourage cats to scratch without ruining your favourite furniture. Scratching posts come in all manner of shapes and sizes - you can even build your own. Scratching behaviour is normal in cats, so providing them with one or more scratching posts will help save your furniture and keep kitty happy.

10.01.2022 If you need to transport your cat to the vet or for boarding, it’s important to always use a pet carrier, so that the cat remains safe and contained. To create a more relaxing experience for your cat, you can familiarise them with the pet carrier prior to travel and use a calming cat pheromone spray inside the carrier. Speak with our friendly team for more advice on how to make transporting your cat a positive experience for all.

09.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why pets need anaesthesia for dentistry? There are several reasons. Firstly, we can’t reason with your pet to tell them it will all be over shortly, so keeping them calm, still and awake while using ultrasonic scalers and polishers in their mouth would be terribly difficult. Secondly, general anaesthesia is preferred to sedation. Not only does it allow the airways to be kept clear and avoid aspiration but, most importantly, it keeps your pet stress-free and pain-free.

09.01.2022 In this beautiful summer weather, cats love their light sunbathing and most dogs love to join their family on a beach trip or picnic. If your pet enjoys water, they’ll happily join you for a dip in the pool (just make sure they can actually swim and that they’re always supervised by an adult). If your dog is the active type, they may also make a great outdoors exercise buddy. We would love to see photos of what you and your pets are getting up to this summer!

09.01.2022 It can be tempting to feed your furry friend food leftovers but dogs can actually develop pancreatitis if they eat a rich or fatty meal, such as fat gristle, bone marrow or other fatty foods. Pancreatitis involves inflammation of the pancreas, which is a gland in the abdomen involved in the digestion of food. Symptoms of pancreatitis can include vomiting, loss of appetite and a painful abdomen. If your pet is showing any of these signs, have them checked by one of our friendly vets as soon as possible.

08.01.2022 Antibacterial medications (often referred to as antibiotics) will only help if your pet’s skin is infected with increased levels of bacteria, and not if there’s just an overgrowth of yeast or pure inflammation present. Our vets can check this by performing some simple skin tests to look for increased bacteria on your pet’s skin. This way, we can ensure that your pet receives only the medications that are going to help them feel better as quickly as possible!

08.01.2022 Cats see the world differently, and it’s up to us to learn how to bond with them. The best approach is to take things slowly, calmly, and quietly. Move smoothly, get down on their level, and let them approach while offering a hand for them to sniff. Never push a cat if they give you signs (e.g. growling, walking away, a warning meow), leave them alone. Those adept in the art of the feline have our respect. If you know a cat whisperer, tag them in the comments below.

08.01.2022 Have you noticed your cat displaying slightly more aggressive behaviour towards you, your family or other pets? ‘Status-induced aggression’ might be one reason. This means your cat is trying to establish social dominance within their household. Avoid rewarding your kitty’s aggressive behaviour with play, attention or food. If you notice your cat blocking doors or swatting household members as they pass, just turn a blind eye until they have relaxed.

08.01.2022 ‘Winnie’, ‘Sage’, ‘Skips’ & ‘Molly’ Graduated Puppy Preschool 19/08/2020 What a great little group of Pups

07.01.2022 As the weather warms up, it’s a critical reminder to never leave your dog inside your car dogs die in hot cars. As the temperature inside a car quickly rises, pets left inside can quickly succumb to potentially fatal heat stress. Do not risk your dog’s life in a hot car instead, leave your dog at home with shade, shelter and access to fresh water.

06.01.2022 Have you noticed your pet weeing a wee bit more? A common reason for this is cystitis, which refers to an inflammation or infection of the bladder. Cystitis can be an irritating and painful condition, causing pets to urinate more often with blood even sometimes noticed in their urine. It’s crucial that you bring your pet in for a vet examination, so that diagnostic tests can be performed and treatment can begin to get your pet back to being their happy and comfortable selves.

06.01.2022 Is your dog or cat on regular flea control? During the colder months, parasites like fleas are less active, but as soon as the weather begins to warm, they return with a vengeance! Good quality flea preventatives stop flea infestations on your pet and in your home. If you suspect your pet already has fleas, you might need to decontaminate your home including pet bedding, carpets and furniture. For assistance on selecting the right flea control for your pet, give our friendly team a call today.

06.01.2022 Indoor pets repeatedly licking their paws can be really irritating - for both you and your pet! If your pet is putting on a paw performance, book an appointment with one of our vets for further assessment!

05.01.2022 Did you know the most important learning period in a dog’s life is between the ages of 3-16 weeks of age? During this time, puppies learn what is normal and what is abnormal. Learning how to interact with other dogs and household objects, like vacuum cleaners, are essential life skills for a pet dog. Getting this period right is the key to a happy, well-adjusted dog. We recommend enrolling puppies into a ‘puppy preschool’ program to help them nail that learning period.

05.01.2022 If you’re heading away for a holiday and can’t take your pets with you, a pet sitter can be a great option. Not only can your pet remain in their own home where they’ll be most relaxed, but the pet sitter can also look after your house and ensure your pet gets all the attention and exercise they need. Speak with our friendly team for advice on local pet sitter options, and ensure your next holiday away is the most enjoyable time for you and your pet.

04.01.2022 "Zeus" and "Ulrik" both graduated puppy preschool tonight! Two very clever pups and their owners. Well done to you both.

03.01.2022 Everyone loves a new puppy, so making sure your pup is well-trained and socialised will help them grow up to be the best dog they can be! Puppy pre-school is a great way for pups to socialise together, and for you to get advice on dog training, parasite prevention and puppy diets. If you have a new puppy, speak to one of our friendly team for more information about puppy pre-school courses.

02.01.2022 Pets need access to fresh, clean water all the time, but if you notice your pet drinking more water than usual or you’re refilling their water bowl more often, it could be a sign that something is amiss. Increased drinking can be caused by various diseases, such as diabetes, kidney problems and changes in other areas of the body’s metabolism. If you think your pet may be drinking more than normal, call us for advice today.

01.01.2022 A summer pool dip is a great way to exercise and have fun with your pet, whilst keeping everyone cool! To ensure your pet stays safe in the water, ensure there’s always a responsible adult supervising. Check that your pet can actually swim this is not an automatic skill that every dog possesses! If you’re unsure, buy them a properly-fitted dog life-jacket and slowly introduce them to the water. Lastly, ensure your pet cannot access the pool when you’re not around.

01.01.2022 It’s often the quieter times at night when you might notice your pup chewing at their paws. This usually means their paws are itchy and inflamed, which is commonly caused by allergies, and generally heightened by springtime. If you notice your pup licking their paws, irritating their ears or developing any areas of redness, inflammation or rashes, contact us today so we can assess and treat your pooch’s itch.
