25.01.2022 Kahiapo's dad arrived yesterday, and is the first Ml back to his colony. We have not seen him in more than 22 months. If we guess he flew an easy 200 miles/day for those 678 days, it means he may have traveled 135,600 miles since we last saw him. Unbelievable. (best in full frame)

12.01.2022 Here’s a video from our O‘ahu Seabird Aid Program Manager. After passing all their health exams, these downed youngsters are heading out to sea!

10.01.2022 Just a couple of albys in love We now have 39 eggs laid on the headlands with some time left for more if the albatross are up for it! 10.01.2022 And we have our first eggs of the season. One of them belongs to this female, to our knowledge a first-time mama. The nest location gives us a good clue about t...he identity of her mate: this is the exact spot where twice-widowed Manuthe first bird back to his colonyhung out, and the exact spot where we saw the two of them canoodling (see 11/14 post.) Ml attachments are precise. Like many indigenous people, you can know them by their place. See more

09.01.2022 One of the BEST seasons we have had with the amount of nests visable from our observatory with so far 6 seen on tour with a couple others which are obscured. Th...is is a great time of year to visit while the adults are nesting incubating their egg. Afternoon tours can increase chances of seeing albatross in flight if the wind picks up. Still 40 eggs laid with over 120 birds seen so far. We hope to see you all visit and experience viewing the world's only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross.

08.01.2022 So this happened. When I visited Klauea Point National Wildlife Refuge the other day, an Uau Kani (wedge-tailed shearwater) chick lurched from the vegetation... and waddled across the path straight toward me. After she got bored with my shoe she vigorously flapped her wings and looked for all the world like she was going to fledge any minute. Next up? The long-awaited day when an (red-footed booby) lands on my head. Please tell Santa. (Best with sound) See more

08.01.2022 I think it’s safe to say we all feel a bit like the proud parents of Nova (although Sitka and Ernest have admittedly done all the hard work!), but with December... on the horizon we’re in the last month of our weekly Nova updates . Watching Nova’s progress over the past 9 months has been a great escape for all of us here at #AlbatrossStoriesHQ, through an extremely challenging year, and we hope it has for you too. Soon the 2020 Wandering albatross chicks will be joining the likes of Greta (last years wandering albatross chick ), perhaps even bumping into each other on their 5 year coming-of-age sabbatical! Time to enjoy the last few weeks Alex Dodds

07.01.2022 Shearwaters really do fly underwater! Mahalo to everyone who has kept an eye out for these downed birds. Fallout season continues on... if you find a downed shearwater, please take it to a dropoff station as soon as you can. https://www.hawaiiwildlifecenter.org/oahu-seabird-aid-progr

04.01.2022 Our most recent updates for black petrel/takoketai tracking: All birds still out at sea but looks like a couple on their way back to Great Barrier. One bird (H-...44164; yellowy-orange track) flew by Lord Howe and foraged around the island. (H-34843; green track) is still 4200km out east of NZ not too far from Rapa Iti (French Polynesia)!
