24.01.2022 Case Puzzler | September 2015 The Tongue Was Involved, But What Was the Trouble?
23.01.2022 KNOCKED OUT OR BROKEN TEETH If permanent teeth are knocked out, there is an excellent chance that they will survive if they are immediately placed back in the tooth socket and dental health advice is sought straight away. Every minute the tooth is out of the socket, the less chance it has of surviving. Adult tooth knocked out - what should I do?... Knocked out tooth how to pick tooth up Replacing knocked out tooth Who to call for dental emergencies If the knocked out tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk without touching the root and follow the steps below. Do not scrub. Stay calm and act quickly. Locate the tooth and hold it by the crown (smooth white part). If the root has dirt on it, gently rinse the tooth in milk or saline solution such as contact lens solution for a few seconds only - do not use water or scrub. If the person is conscious, hold the cleaned tooth by the crown and replace it into its socket using light pressure. Hold the tooth in place by getting the person to gently bite on a handkerchief. Seek immediate advice or treatment from an oral health professional (see Emergency dental care). If you cant replace the tooth: Do not let it become dry and do not use tap water. Place the tooth in milk or saliva (preferably the patients). Seal it in plastic wrap. Seek immediate advice or treatment from an oral health professional. Knocked out baby tooth - what should you do? Do not try to put a baby tooth back in its socket because: It may fuse to the socket, which leads to difficulties when it is time for the tooth to be shed. It may damage the permanent tooth underneath the socket. Contact an oral health professional. Broken or fractured tooth - What should you do? Cracked or fractured teeth may or may not be painful. It is recommended that you see an oral health professional, as early recognition can improve the survival of the damaged tooth. If the tooth fragment is broken and is intact, store it in milk or saliva (preferably the patients). Seal it in plastic wrap. See an oral health professional as soon as possible.
22.01.2022 Use of SPF lip balm to prevent sun damage and risk of lip cancer. To protect dry, chapped lips from the sun, use lip balm that contains offers SPF 30 or higher and one (or both) of these sun-protective ingredients: Titanium oxide... Zinc oxide While outdoors, generously apply the lip balm every 2 hours. Drink plenty of water. Chapped lips are dry lips, so you want to stay hydrated. Stop licking, biting, and picking at your lips. When lips feel dry, it may feel natural to wet them by licking them, but this can worsen the problem. As saliva evaporates, your lips become drier.

20.01.2022 Dental caries affects body weight, growth and quality of life in pre-school children Severe untreated dental caries is very common in pre-school children in many countries. Following treatment of affected decayed teeth there is more rapid weight gain and growth velocity in the treated children. Children with untreated early childhood caries (ECC) have significantly poorer oral health-related quality of life than children without ECC. Comprehensive treatment in pre-sch...ool children makes a very significant difference to the psychological and social aspects of the childs life. Abstract The effect of a relatively common chronic disease, severe dental caries, affects young childrens growth and well-being. Treating dental caries in pre-school children would increase growth rates and the quality of life of millions of children. Severe untreated dental caries is common in pre-school children in many countries. Children with severe caries weighed less than controls, and after treatment of decayed teeth there was more rapid weight gain and improvements in their quality of life. This may be due to dietary intake improving because pain affected the quantity and variety of food eaten, and second, chronic inflammation from caries related pulpitis and abscesses is known to suppress growth through a metabolic pathway and to reduce haemoglobin as a result of depressed erythrocyte production. 13.01.2022 What dental patients should know about health insurance The vast majority of those having extras health insurance cover are shamelessly ripped off by health funds. Policies broadly fall into three classifications, being: 1. Hospital cover which, dependent on policy, may or may not include major items like hip surgery or obstetrics. 2. Extras cover, which provides support for dental treatment, being 50% of payments, optical and, in most policies, a smattering of phys...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Is this happening to you? Sensitivity toothpastes work by either covering up exposed dentinal tubules or by desensitizing the nerve endings in the dentinal tubules. Sensitive toothpastes also contain fluoride, which has been shown to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay. You also need to check your teeth with your general dentist to find the cause of sensitivity.

05.01.2022 WHAT CAUSES CAVITY? Your mouth is a busy place. Bacteria tiny colonies of living organisms are constantly on the move on your teeth, gums, lips and tongue. Having bacteria in your mouth is a normal thing. While some of the bacteria can be harmful, most are not and some are even helpful. Certain types of bacteria, however, can attach themselves to hard surfaces like the enamel that covers your teeth. If theyre not removed, they multiply and grow in number until a colony for...ms. More bacteria of different types attach to the colony already growing on the tooth enamel. Proteins that are present in your saliva (spit) also mix in and the bacteria colony becomes a whitish film on the tooth. This film is called plaque, and its what causes cavities. See more

04.01.2022 WHAT IS PERIODONTITIS ? Periodontitis, also generally called gum disease or periodontal disease, begins with bacterial growth in your mouth and may end -- if not properly treated -- with tooth loss due to destruction of the tissue that surrounds your teeth. Whats the Difference Between Gingivitis and Periodontitis?... Gingivitis (gum inflammation) usually precedes periodontitis (gum disease). However, it is important to know that not all gingivitis progresses to periodontitis. In the early stage of gingivitis, bacteria in plaque build up, causing the gums to become inflamed and to easily bleed during tooth brushing. Although the gums may be irritated, the teeth are still firmly planted in their sockets. No irreversible bone or other tissue damage has occurred at this stage. When gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis. In a person with periodontitis, the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form pockets. These small spaces between teeth and gums collect debris and can become infected. The bodys immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Toxins or poisons -- produced by the bacteria in plaque as well as the bodys "good" enzymes involved in fighting infections -- start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. When this happens, teeth are no longer anchored in place, they become loose, and tooth loss occurs. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
