06.01.2022 THE GREEN SHIRT Nice title eh. Well you need to bear with me and listen to this one. My family is one of those impacted by the state governments new vegetation ...laws. I won't go into the whole thing except to say that science and best practice and landholders rights have been sacrificed at the altar of the inner city greens of Jackie Trads electorate. This is about my last few days and this afternoon in particular. On Friday the 11/5 I was informed that the Premier would be in Mackay today. I informed a few people I know and asked them to spread the word. This was very late in the afternoon. Monday morning these people started getting calls from the police inquiring about the protest. Agforce took it on board to organise permits and liaise with the police. At 4pm about 60 to 70 people gathered - men women and kids - to protest about the impact on their livelihoods. We were faced with about a dozen uniformed police who informed us that we were to remain behind a line approximately 50 metres from the entrance to the MECC where a function was to be held. I was wearing my Greens and spoke to the assembled people about the impact on us all and the people that rely on agriculture. This is where it starts to get really interesting At about 5.30 I was informed by another councillor that the premier had sneaked in by the back way. She did not even have the guts to walk past the people she had so wronged - albeit with a 50 metre separation. It gets better however. I then attempted to enter the event to present a letter to the premier. I had in my hand an official invitation to the event supplied by the premier to all councillors. I was apprehended by the police and was informed that they had been told to prevent my entry. This is despite having the invitation and other councillors being given entry. It appears that if you support, or are a farmer you are treated very differently to anyone else. It is utterly disgusting and later a police officer apologised for having to do it and queried why they were asked to do it. This is the person that steers our state. these are the heavy handed tactics that happen in a so called free society. There was no swearing or aggressive behaviour - just people who have been ignored trying to have their voices heard. I wonder if our Mayor even bothered to raise the issue of the impact on our rural people or was he too busy basking in the sullied glow of our premier. While it is great to get state money promised for projects is it right that it has to be at the expense of hard working country people? If you care about the people on the land and about fairness and peoples right to a voice then please share this far and wide. And to all those who whinge about these unfair laws but never bothered to come - where were you?
