25.01.2022 SME Managers often want to improve Employee Engagement, because it is an important metric for predicting employee retention rates, productivity and profitability, to name a few. However, this topic has been unnecessarily complicated. It isn't out of reach for smaller organisations as is often thought. In this video I share some key tips to achieve it and share a practical tool to measure and address it in the workplace.

25.01.2022 If you are an executive business leader, it is not the technical skills within your industry that hinder improvement of your strategic performance. It is more about how you lead through others; it's how you build culture, and work on the intangible factors that are often difficult to nail down. 23.01.2022 LEADERS DEALING WITH STRESS IN THE WORKPLACE IN THE CONTEXT OF COVID-19. Two weeks ago a client of mine was speaking with me about stress, specifically surrounding his staff during the Covid-19 season. In his role as a CEO, he had noticed an increase in anxiety among his team members through some out-of-character behaviours. Stress seems to be a topic that is surfacing more often of late. As his coach, we unpacked things together, and I was reminded that many leaders are not ...Continue reading

23.01.2022 Senior Leadership Development that Really Works. I regularly rub shoulders with senior business leaders and find that many do not fully comprehend what leadership competencies matter most to be successful within an organisation. A leader generally doesn’t like to waste time, yet regarding developmental approaches I find many who do, by inadvertently chasing shiny objects that promise transformation, yet deliver little progress. Having been in senior leadership positions and...Continue reading

22.01.2022 Have you ever let fear get in the way of stepping out into a new adventure? During this time, I'm seeing two mindsets appear; one that sees lots of obstacles and plays it too safe, and one that sees lots of opportunities and gives it a go. I'm noticing that this is a time to recheck what you are passionate about, and be encouraged to not let fear dictate your future.

14.01.2022 4 KEY ELEMENTS FOR BUILDING TEAM TRUST: going beyond superficiality, so you can achieve exceptional results and enjoy the journey! I just had the privilege to run a team-building workshop with a group of executive leaders, who already have significant trust with each other, and the teams they each run. We looked at 4 key elements to building deeper trust. When surveying the room, it became obvious that we have different ways of demonstrating trust and measuring it in others.... Some rely heavily on 'reliability' where people get things done as they said they would. Others depended strongly on personal 'acceptance,' so they could share hard truths and know they would not be attacked for doing so. Others perceived the presence of team trust by the 'openness' people used to share information and ideas with each other. Finally, some team members measured trust levels by how easy it felt to 'receive and give helpful feedback' on team and team member performance, to keep on improving as a team. Trust was also built through greater insight in understanding how others measured trust differently. You can't shortcut taking time to get to know people's values more deeply, hearing our stories, appreciating differences; it underpins trust!

13.01.2022 There is an old saying, that when life throws you lemons, make lemonade. The saying inspires resilience, innovation and a winning attitude. All of which are the ingredience to success in life. Life and business have always got elements of difficulty that will push us toward, and sometimes beyond, our limits. Yet it is how we interpret our limits that determines our success. Another saying I taught my children was, "It's not fair when you compare." There will always be someone out their with more skill, resources and talent than you have, but that is irrelevant to how you fully utilise yours to achieve your level of excellence.

11.01.2022 Senior Leaders & Managers: What is Your Staff Disengagement Costing Your Business? Why does engagement matter? According to a Gallup study across 190 diverse industries, on average in Australia, only 24% of employees are engaged in their work, with 60% not engaged and 16% actively disengaged. Roughly 1 in 4 workers are psychologically committed to their job and likely making a significant contribution to their organisation. ...Continue reading

11.01.2022 What remote practices have you found helpful to engage your team members during Covid-19? Astronaut Chris Hadfield, who lead a culturally and generationally diverse team for 6 months in an international space station, shares a couple of things he did to be one of the most productive and engaged groups in NASA’s history. They were confined to such a small space 24/7 for 6 months, yet they reported no emotional flareups or sources of negative conflict. One secret - they spent ...time sharing each other’s stories before going into space. It is easier to overlook quirks when you know someone. Second secret - each team member was to perform one random act of kindness for each other member, daily. Often these acts were done anonymously, making the whole journey replete with uplifting and pleasantly surprising experiences. These random acts were not heroic, but basic menial acts of kindness to sustain an effective community. These acts assisted in focusing on the value of humility and resisted an imbalanced focus on self-importance, while significantly contributing to each other’s needs. As a team-leader I have found that role modelling through sharing personal stories during meetings, is one way to build trust. Ensure that you set this as a part of your agenda and encourage your team members to share their stories. It doesn't have to be deep and meaningful, just personal. It is easy to find ways to perform random acts of kindness, even applying it to remote teams. In the spirit of sharing, what’s one practice you’ve found effective with your remote team?

11.01.2022 It has been 30 years since the term Emotional Intelligence (EI) was first coined. This has brought numerous longitudinal studies demonstrating that it is one of the single most powerful competencies to advance a person's career and overall happiness. I had the privilege today to train 50 staff at CHC College through exploring their EI assessment results. We looked at both individual and cultural aspects, investigating the relationship of EI with stress, procrastination, empathic service and compassionate leadership. What a great group of people to spend time with and share together.

11.01.2022 Just had a great Off-Site Team-Building Day, where we focussed on team intelligence and team communication.

10.01.2022 Developing Talent Management Pathways within an Organisation Is talent management part of your strategic plan? With all the details involved in running a successful organisation, a leader can get overwhelmed at times. Therefore, it is good to step back regularly and remind ourselves that there are only a few key result areas that need our attention to lead to organisational success. Regarding the human resource side of this equation, implementing a clear talent management p...Continue reading

10.01.2022 One of the biggest traps that Business leaders tend to fall into is where they think their strongest traits are their greatest strengths. However, oft-times their strongest traits are their greatest weaknesses. There is a dynamic that takes place which many leaders do not understand. I've created a video which explains this dynamic and how to work against the negativity that can take place if you are unaware of it. For leaders who are now leading many people remotely, this ha...s even more significance. Because, in leading people without the tangible, tactile, face-to-face interactions, the effective use of emotional intelligent soft skills are even more critical. The area of weakness in a leader relying too much on their strong traits is usually hidden from their awareness. However, the weakness will show up eventually in how well staff are engaged, culture is built, and business results are achieved, long-term. This video assists in explaining how to expose these areas for greater leadership effectiveness.

07.01.2022 Let me start with the number one area to create a successful business. I say number one - because it is first in a sequential line of steps to business success. It seems like it should go without saying, but if you want an exceptional business you need excellent staff who can create an amazing experience for customers, maintain consistent productivity levels, while enjoying their work. To achieve this you have to start with recruiting the right people into your business. You ...Continue reading
