21.01.2022 This weekend, get active and explore our beautiful outdoors! Rug up in copious amounts of woolly layers while you check out some of our more unknown hidden gems.... Start off with a morning wander down historic Petticoat Lane and visit the beautiful Penola National Trust Community Herb Garden at the rear of heritage listed Sharam Cottage. Have kids? Take them to the playground, have a scoot at the skatepark, visit the Penola Fantasy Theme Park & Tearoom and then head for a shake and sweet delight down the main street! Go for a drive to Father Woods Park, located 21 kilometres north of Penola which is home to a series of seven sculptures depicting the life of Father Julian Tenison Woods and Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop. You will see seven tree stumps standing in the middle of the park across the road from the Father Woods tree, which marks where the parish priest used to conduct mass. On your way back to Penola, visit the Penola Conservation Park (off of Robe Road to discover its wetland environment, woodlands and open heaths. The park's swamps (when full) provide a breeding area for numerous waterbirds such as herons, ibis and swamphens which make the park an interesting site for birdwatching. It is also a haven for orchids in spring. You may also see flocks of yellow-tailed black-cockatoos or encounter a short-beaked echidna, red-necked wallaby or a western grey kangaroo. Stop in to St Mary's Wines and Spirits and visit their stunning gardens that have evolved over the past 70 years. Feeling like some more exercise? Head to Greenrise Recreation Reserve on the Mount Gambier side of Penola to run it all off (fur kids are very welcome). Stroll or run around the arboretum trail of 1.2km showcasing 110 species of trees before linking up to the Adam Lindsay Gordon Walk around the dry lake and cemetery. Enjoy the scenery taking in kangaroos, sheep and birdlife. Greenrise Recreation Reserve links to the main street walking path past the Hospital for a fantastic 5.5km return track. Keen golfer? The Penola Golf Club is looking amazing at the moment, so if the rain holds off why not play a round? Green fees are just $30 which includes interaction with about 300 kangaroos! To check opening details of your favourite Coonawarra wineries and to book a tasting, follow this link: https://coonawarra.org//06/july-cellar-door-tastings-guide/ Want to be chauffeured around a few faves? Hit up Coonawarra Experiences for a booking. Or, take in the Coonawarra Walking Trail by foot. Enjoy delicious dining options from Drink Ottelia + Eat Fodder, Café in the Vines or the Prince of Wales Hotel Motel. While you're here pop into Di's Gifts'n'Flowers, Koonara Lifestyle, Penola True Value Hardware and Adrian Thomas Industrial. Before you head home, drive through the Royal Oak Hotel Penola to pick up some delicious Coonawarra wine, before heading to our national award-winning Penola IGA Fresh to take home some of the most amazing cheeses you have ever tasted. Why not make a night of it? Contact the Penola Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre for further information on beautiful B&Bs or reach out to the stunning and central Alexander Cameron Suites, Cobb and Co Cottages (via Di's Gifts and Flowers), Sarah's Cottage, Coonawarra Motor Lodge or enjoy Coonawarra first hand at The Blok Coonawarra, Coonawarra Cottages or Punters Corner Retreat. 17.01.2022 Did you know that Penola is the oldest inland town in The Limestone Coast? Many of the buildings in town are listed on the state heritage register. Penola’s ori...ginal inhabitants were the Pinchunga (Pinejunga) Aboriginal people who expertly foraged and hunted in and around the district’s swamps and beautiful red gums. We’re also home to many renowned and historical figures including John Riddoch, Father Julian Tenison Woods and of course St Mary MacKillop, with the pastoralist credited to founding Penola, Alexander Cameron arriving 175 years ago this year. Come for a visit this weekend to explore our history. Visit the Penola Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre where you can pick up a Penola National Trust ‘Walk with History’ brochure outlining 45 free historical stops around town to visit.
