22.01.2022 BROOME Broome was the pearl of the north with its melting pot of races; Caucasians, Aborigines, Timorese, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese who had come at different times to try their luck at pearling. Some stayed, leaving progeny behind; some left their bodies in the local cemetery. The architecture, the food, the faces were a testimony to the never-ending migration and exchange of humanity attracted to this harsh environment. It is hard to imagine that the advent of something as ...banal as the plastic button, which replaced mother of pearl in the mid 20th century could be the nail in the coffin for the industry that had driven all these people here. The place looked doomed to die till in the 60s the Japanese who had contributed so much to the pearl industry discovered how to make cultured pearls. 22.01.2022 KANGAROOS & SPINIFEX At first, through the wheat belt, horizon to horizon nothing but wheat, then low undulations covered in a carpet of flowers in waves of colours till eventually, it turned into patchy grass with scrubby bushes. Gradually rusty red became the dominating colour of the landscape. In places, the eye caught flashes of the intense blue of the ocean crowded with enormous fluffy cumulus clouds; a breathtaking canvas. ...Hitching was easy in the southern reaches, ...mainly farmers going locally. The further north I headed the wait time got longer due to the lack of traffic, but the lifts were for hundreds of kilometres at a time. 18.01.2022 ISOLATED ...this job required a lot of driving around. All these activities took place in virgin bush; bush meaning a landscape of sparse bushes and low trees. Encounters with kangaroos, emus and possums were common occurrence. I was in heaven! It could not have been more Australian. Within six months I had saved up $1600 and was eager to see more of this country. ...From here my reality was Antarctica 3000 kilometres to the south, Indonesia 3000 kilometres to the north, the... Indian Ocean and Africa 5000 kilometres to the west and 3000 kilometres of Australian deserts and plains to the east.
