As the late '80s, you could have fired a cannon in the main street of any town or suburb in Victoria after 6pm most nights and after 1 pm on Saturdays and you wouldn't hit a thing. but the lights stayed on in Milkbars across the state well into the night if you needed a litre of milk, some sliced ham for school lunches, a packet of biscuits or a packet of cigarettes.
