25.01.2022 In 2015, the Red Cliffs Football Club recruited AFL footy star Nick Stevens. On the upside, Nick was really good at footy and would probably help Red Cliffs win a Grand Final. On the downside, he had been convicted of various family violence offences, including bashing his girlfriend’s head against a granite bench top. . I was contacted by a local mother whose little boy played for Red Cliffs, and she asked me to say something about this so-called "exciting" appointment. She ...was concerned about what this said about the Club’s culture and the impact it would have on her child. . At the time, I was a Councillor. Council was White Ribbon accredited. And Council owned some of the Club’s facilities. I thought that warranted a strong Council-led response to what I believed was an appalling judgement call by Red Cliffs. . But Council claimed it wasn’t its place to get involved. I was attacked and derided by some members of the Club and one person defensively commented that if you start kicking out every footy player who's had an IVO against them, you won't have any players left. . Fast forward to January 2019 - several years and hundreds of White Ribbon morning teas later - when a local Dimboola footy star bashes his girlfriend to a pulp. While Kim O’Reilly lies in hospital, broken, bloodied and bruised beyond recognition, the footy star is released on bail and his return to the field is celebrated. When the case goes to Court, 33 members of the Club write character references for him, telling the judge what a great bloke he is. . What that tells me is that there is still a cultural problem at our clubs. We need more than morning teas to change the culture. We need legislative change. . Please read Kim’s story. What happened to this beautiful girl is an abomination. And it could have been prevented if we as a society had the guts to stand up and speak out when it counts, not just when it’s polite or convenient. . Look at her face and remember her name. More updates to come. . https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=678937219445745&id=273967403276064 See more
24.01.2022 Call me Captain Obvious, but it's going to be another long, hot summer. . That's why we have established the Mallee Summer Taskforce with Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D'Ambrosio. . The long awaited air-con package for public housing properties won't be rolled out in time for this summer, BUT there's still a lot we can do to enhance people's safety with careful planning in relation to load shedding and heat refuges. That's where the Mallee Summer... Taskforce comes in ... . Stay tuned for updates. . #malleetough See more

06.01.2022 This morning we are heartbroken . Dr Kevin Chambers was a local hero. An irreplaceable icon of our community. . Not only was he a remarkable doctor, but a great man too.... . He was warm, compassionate, funny, courageous and deeply committed to the principles of universal public healthcare. He is the reason we have our hospital back. . I will have more to say later, but for now, my deepest condolences to Julie and the family. . Vale Dr Kevin Chambers. Your community loved you very much See more
06.01.2022 With COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions easing significantly, there has never been a more important time to shop locally. . Our small businesses have been crippled for the past six months. Many had to close their doors for significant periods, others were only able to trade in a reduced way. .... Even now, as we slowly start to find some normality, many businesses are not able to fully operate with patron or customer limits in place. . I launched my #onlylocal campaign when regional Victoria was plunged back into Stage 3 restrictions at the start of August. . The campaign encourages all of us to think about our shopping habits and, where we can, shop locally rather than online. . The ease and convenience of online shopping is so tempting knowing whatever we want is just a click away and can be delivered to our door is an attractive option. . But the question we need to ask ourselves while we’re looking for something on Amazon or Ebay is: Could I buy this item locally? . If the answer is yes, it’s our duty to get out and do just that. Small businesses are the backbone of our community and the recovery from COVID-19 is going to be a long and difficult one for them. . With Christmas just around the corner, we will all be thinking about the presents we are going to be buying for our loved ones. . There would be no better present for our local businesses than giving them our support and patronage. . This week I launched an online portal, in conjunction with GrantGuru, on my website to give people a one-stop-shop for more than 1200 government grants, which includes a separate section for coronavirus support. . There are many grants available for businesses, industry, community, sporting groups and individuals so it’s great to have an easy-to-navigate portal on offer. . There are tips on how to apply and explanations on the different grants so I’d urge anyone looking for support to log on and see what is available. See more

01.01.2022 Still looking good! .
01.01.2022 A STRONG push to relax mask rules has paid dividends with the Victorian Government easing the requirements on Sunday. Member for Mildura Ali Cupper has been lobbying the government for weeks to consider allowing people to remove masks outside providing social distancing is possible. It will be a huge relief to people in the Mildura electorate the Government has listened to our concerns about wearing masks outside in our heat, Ms Cupper said on Sunday. The weather has certa...inly started to get hotter over the past couple of weeks and we’ve seen how difficult it is to wear masks outside in that heat. People will still have to wear masks inside and carry them at all times. This is a common-sense approach, particularly for regions like ours where the extreme heat over the next couple of months will make it almost impossible to adhere to wearing masks outside, Ms Cupper said. Other changes to restrictions, to apply from midnight Sunday, announced by the Government include: Fifteen visitors allowed in the home per day with 50 people allowed in outdoor gatherings; Larger hospitality venues will be allowed 300 patrons with a maximum of 100 inside. Smaller venues will be allowed 50 customers inside. Cinemas, galleries and museums will be allowed up to 150 people inside. Contact and non-contact sport can start for adults with 150 people indoors (group size of 20) and 500 outdoors. Indoor pools can have 150 people and outdoor pools 300. Gyms can have 150 people in groups of 20 (one person per 4sq m). Faith ceremonies can have 150 people inside and 300 outside. Weddings and funerals can have 150 people indoors. This is the biggest sign we are getting back a real sense of normal life, Ms Cupper said. We have to remember this virus is still with us, but there will be a huge sense of relief around the easing of a lot of these restrictions. The Government also announced 30 visitors to households would be allowed from December 13. This will make Christmas a lot more normal for a lot of families, Ms Cupper said. Ms Cupper is also eager for the Victorian Government to relax its border closure with South Australia as soon as possible. From midnight on Saturday, a permit system has been introduced for South Australians wanting to enter Victoria. I am pleased the Government is allowing the 70km zone to remain for border communities, however after such a lengthy period of time we need some certainty about when it is planned to reopen the border entirely, Ms Cupper said. South Australia has indicated it is continuing with its plan to reopen its border to Victoria on December 1, so I would certainly hope the Victorian Government is working to a similar timeline. 01.01.2022 This week in Parliament, Ali urged the Victorian Government to consider the challenges ahead for the region when it hands down its Budget on November 24. . The Budget is the first opportunity to invest in our recovery and our future. . The Victorian Government has invested more than $23 million in infrastructure stimulus spending in the Mildura electorate since the pandemic started, including $5.5 million for the Mildura riverfront, $4.4 million for TAFE and $4 million for th...e Buloke shire streetscapes, but we need more, and I urge the Victorian Government to consider these issues on 24 November. . The impacts of lockdowns and restrictions have been exacerbated by the New South Wales and South Australian border closures. . Ours is the only electorate to be bounded by both the New South Wales and South Australian borders, and being locked out of those states has not only impacted our day-to-day lives but has adversely affected business, our economy and in many ways our social fabric. . Now we are headed to a COVID normal, having defeated the second wave, but our fight in many ways is just beginning. . For a region which already has low socio-economic indicators, the harsh reality of COVID-19 is stark. . We will keep fightingit is what we dobut now more than ever we need the Victorian government to fight with us and alongside us. See more
