22.01.2022 Self-isolation and social distancing is leading to a lack of connection to our family, friends and workmates and is proving to be a challenge for many. Even those of us who enjoy time on our own are starting to appreciate how much we value being part of a community of people, including the team we work with. Tony Robbins once said, The quality of your life is the quality of your relationships. If we haven’t recognised this before it is certainly front of mind now. Many ar...e discovering the true benefit of ‘quality time’ with our immediate family, due to suddenly finding ourselves much more present to them which can mostly be determined as a good thing. As leaders, where does this leave us with our work colleagues? These are the people that, (without really thinking too much about it) are a significant part of our sociable selves. As a leader of a few or many, you may find that once things ‘return to normal’ the person that once sat before or beside you will be irrevocably changed as part of this experience and may view the world completely differently. This operational pause is not the time for distance or complacency it is a time for connection.
21.01.2022 Shops are finally opening their doors. What happens next, is up to us.
20.01.2022 A friend of mine, Claire, recently secured a job with a large retailer. She was so excited to join the team and told me all about the training she received to get her ready to start in-store. The highlight of her induction was when the Big boss came and spoke to her group. She was inspired to hear about the brand’s story and the growth from the early days. They were treated to lunch and then a full afternoon of product knowledge and customer service training. She couldn’t wait to get started. 20.01.2022 How are you using this precious time to evolve as a leader? As leaders, we can’t control much of what we are faced with at the moment, what we can control is how we choose to spend our time and what we focus on. Many of us are leading from home and we have had to find new ways to do it productively. It is easy to lose ourselves as we become completely absorbed in our business day to day.... Is this a golden opportunity for us to learn about our own leadership and dedicate time to our personal or professional development? For us to evolve and be better? #leadership #coaching #leadershipmentoring #leadershipmentoring #workingfromhome #remoteleadership #executivepresence #leadingfromhome
19.01.2022 My latest book The Essential Guide for Area Leaders in Retail, shares the skills required to become a more efficient and agile Area Leader - it’s for ambitious individuals who want to take their careers to a new and exciting level, and to work smarter, not harder. Retail is changing all the time. Although online is a growing marketplace, the ongoing possibilities that come with bricks and mortar stores should not be ignored, and having the right people nurturing them is cru...cial. While the basics of leadership are consistent, such as creating a vision and executing strategy, how they are put into practice often are not. Here’s some of the feedback I have received so far: "The Essential Guide for Area Leaders already has me hooked. I feel like I’m reading my own personal biography. Ashleigh, Area Leader A fantastic book of leadership, one that I was privileged to learn from in real time. If you are a leader in multi-site retail, or plan on implementing leadership strategies within a team, or want to be a leader, buy this book! 19.01.2022 Last week I was delivering a workshop with a group of Retail Area Leaders for a fashion retailer. I asked the question How are you feeling now that it’s the end of 2020? One of them, Sarah said, It’s hard to believe the year is over, but I do have to say I feel relieved.... The rest of the group agreed in unison. 18.01.2022 Considering about 85% of most retail sales are still made in bricks and mortar stores this makes good business sense. Due to the current climate, in many cases, great leasing deals are available and landlords are a bit more flexible. https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//universal-store-still-ke

15.01.2022 TEAM OWNERSHIP IS AN IMPORTANT STEP ON YOUR ROAD TO RECOVERY. One of my first lessons in leadership was what could be achieved when you give your team ownership. As a team, we were working towards winning a big award based on our profit. I knew we had to sell more but we also needed to manage our costs. I showed the Profit&Loss to the team and we looked at where we were wasting money. Together, we looked at all of our costs line by line and came up with strategies to reduce t...hem. With many businesses now well and truly in recovery mode, this presents a wonderful opportunity to not only recover well but to engage staff in the process. The level of ownership and the ability to execute a good recovery plan will depend on what level you involve your team in developing the plan and the strategies. A recent Gallup study shows that organizations that have focused on creating high-development cultures, where people can see their impact on the organization and its customers through their work achieve up to 70% engagement. That’s a massive number. We met weekly to keep an eye on the prize and yes, we did win the award. We were recognised and celebrated in front of the whole company. It remains one of my proudest moments in business.

15.01.2022 Why understaffing costs more than overstaffing.... Like many retail customers, I do most of my shopping on the weekend, hoping to get in and out as quickly as possible. I will usually head to one of the major department stores. I find what I am looking for, then wander around the floor looking for a sales assistant to take my money. As I wander, I might finally find a register that is open, having passed at least a few closed checkouts along the way. I join the long queue and... wait and wait! If I really need what I am buying, I deal with my frustration and continue to wait. But, on occasions, I have walked out, leaving behind the item I wanted to purchase. 14.01.2022 As retail stores start to reopen for business, Area Leaders will be working hard to rebound results quickly. No doubt the focus will be on reconnecting with your store managers and their teams and helping them connect with each other. Although things won’t be quite back to normal, the expectations you have need to be matched with the level of support you can provide. I am coaching a number of retail area leaders right now and this is the first area I am focusing on to supp...ort them in reopening. If you're an Area leader that has very high expectations, but unable to provide a high level of support to achieve the goals you have set, your staff may feel let down and the excitement of reopening will soon be lost. Alternatively, if you provide a high level of support and have very unclear expectations, your stores might feel like a really warm and fuzzy place to work but lack the understanding of the urgency to deliver results. Research has shown that a teachers’ beliefs about their students and what they can achieve, can have a substantial impact on students’ learning and progress. When you give the tools needed and show you believe in your people you will have a good balance of both. When a balance is reached results will follow. #retailleadership #arealeaders #retail

12.01.2022 After writing every single day for the last 13 weeks (phew!), my first book, "The Essential Guide for Area Leaders in Retail" is finally complete! Although being in lockdown has been incredibly challenging, it allowed me the time to think, plan and write a book that has been inside me for the last 10 years. It hasn't been easy, but it has certainly been a labour of love for an industry I am very passionate about and a role that I believe is paramount for retail success. I can't wait to officially launch it later this month!

11.01.2022 Thinking of all of my Travel Industry friends especially my Flight Centre family. A place I called home for 25years. You have all done a amazing job over the last few weeks working around the clock getting your clients home and making sure they were looked after. You were there for them when the internet wasn’t. To all of my friends - when life gets back to normal (and it will) please book your next holiday with a Travel Agent. If you need a contact let me know I can recommend some fabulous ones. Without a Travel Agent you are on your own -Never a truer word spoken over the last few weeks.

08.01.2022 Over the last two decades we have celebrated the advancements to a digital world. Several components of our lives have moved online, and in many ways, technology has been a godsend. Now, our lives have dramatically changed again as we navigate learning, working and socialising from home. Some are coping amazingly well, and enjoyed many aspects of this new normal (who hasn’t dreamed of working in their sweat pants?) Could working from home be a trend that is here to stay?... Research has shown that we can be just as productive working from home. We appreciate not wasting time in our day commuting to the office. There is a distinct possibility that Leaders who have pushed back previously, may now see the enormous benefits to productivity and be open to a more flexible workplace. With every change for the better some challenges can still be presented. For example, missing aspects of life in the office, human to human connection and feeling part of a team. With our homes as our workplace, we may struggle to to have a mental break. Some parts of our virtual lives are working and some aren’t. There are so many things that cannot be replaced digitally. As leaders, this crisis has given us the opportunity to reflect on which parts we want to keep and which parts we would rather leave behind. #leadership #workingfromhome #connection #opentochange #adapt #covid19

02.01.2022 How well you look after your people now can pay dividends down the track. Your staff will remember what you did during this crisis to help create certainty and ease the burden. The loyalty you demonstrate, how you act to support your team financially or emotionally and if necessary, the sacrifices you make, will have the biggest impact on the loyalty returned. What things you are doing for your team right now that are making the biggest difference? I’d love to hear about them
