25.01.2022 This fly is my take on one of the flies that was promoted by our 2018 Northern Ireland Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships team guild as being a productive fly for use in the lakes that we fished there. Because of the lack of body dressing and the epoxy body this fly sinks quickly and apparently is great option for stocked rainbows in particular. http://fishonfly.com.au/wp/black-epoxy-bugger

23.01.2022 In 2018 I represented Australia at the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships in N. Ireland and in the lead up to that event I was introduced to this. Called a Droz nymph it had skipped my attention even though it has been used for several seasons with great success in Tasmania, Victoria and even NSW. http://fishonfly.com.au/wp/tbh-dross-nymph-variant.

18.01.2022 Moving toward the end of the river season for trout my attention always starts to think about lake fishing options for the winter season. This is one of my favorite top dropper flies for the times when fish are scarce so it's not surprising that it often features as my top dropper fly during winter. http://fishonfly.com.au/wp/humungus-black-and-gold

16.01.2022 I was interested to see that the Qld government clarified arrangements about fishing during the CV19 virus. What they have decided is that it's OK to go fishing for table fish as long as everybody abides by the social distancing rules (i.e. each person requires 4 meters of space on the vessel) and group rules (i.e. groups must not exceed 2 people unless the people you are with are part of your household ... not visitors not friends) and if the second person is not part of yo...ur household you will need to stay at least 1.5 meters apart). For me that meant that I could go fishing by myself for table fish in my 5.3M Polycraft as long as I applied the above boat specific and the general social distancing and group rules which the boat rules reflect ... so I did. Had a solo outing yesterday and managed about 10 small pike. One was particularly interesting as a Spanish mackerel of about 1 M took it and my fly at the boat ... 2 or 3 seconds of excitement. Did get one small GT and hooked a good demersal fish over reef which broke me off before I was able to identify it. The whole trip sounds like a do over for a day next week.

16.01.2022 CV19 certainly has introduced some challenges for us all. Most of which we would never have thought possible at the start of 2020. Julie and I have been doing w...ell with our hermit existence and being house bound (well property bound because we live on a fenced acre of land) has given us the opportunity to tick off some projects for me some around the boats and boat house, some in the yard, notable two herb and veg gardens, and some fly tying and rearranging gear etc. I have also been lucky enough, under the Cv19 rules to still be able to go fishing by myself in my boats as long as I abide by the social distancing rules and am fishing for table fish. I don’t normally keep fish but will be keeping some table fish for the duration of CV19. On my last fishing outing just last week I ventured out and after a couple of hours of nothing on the troll, soft plastics or bait I moved in around seal rocks reef to try my luck on fly. It was all going swimmingly well and I was catching a few pike and a couple of rock cod your right they are not table fish. Anyway, pike stink so I try, when I can, to shake them off in the water. I was doing that with one when it all went wrong well maybe right. What happened was that a Spanish Mackerel (a great table fish) of over a meter came from nowhere and took the pike and my fly It was very exciting for at least 2 seconds. In the same outing I also got bitten off by a good reef fish, I’m thinking that was probably a coral trout (another good table fish). So here I am hatching a scathing brilliant plan for my next outing. I am confident I can catch more pike but this time my fly will be rigged on this wire trace. By the way I bought the sleeves and the wire 40 odd years ago at Ern Webb sports in Wollongong. My plan may be fraught but what I am going to do is if I hook pike, I’ll retrieve them slowly and you never know maybe I can convert one to a Mackerel. If I hook a demersal fish such as a Coral Trout hopefully the trace will help me stay connected I’ll keep you posted.

14.01.2022 Instead of the usual $65,000 worth of major prize boat. This year the 25th HookUp will be giving away $85,000 worth of major prize boat. This means for a senior entry fee of $90 you have a 1 in 3,000 chance of towing this prize boat away. And that is just one of the prizes. https://boynetannumhookup.com.au/

10.01.2022 Spent a bit of today topping up my #10 weight fly box with a batch of Large Mud Prawns. http://fishonfly.com.au/wp/mud-prawn-large

10.01.2022 Still topping up my #10 weight fly box so I decided to tie a couple of extra olive coloured articulated woolly buggers. http://fishonfly.com.au/wp/articulated-bugger They’re tied on #3/0 Mustard Stainless Steel hooks that are 44mm long. ... My recipe for this fly calls for a tail that is 55mm long ("Target a finished tail that is 1.25 the overall length of the hook"). Whilst there was no problem making the under-tails the full 55mm long unfortunately the only good quality marabou I could find was only 45mm in length. I don’t know if you have read the recipe but if you have, or do, you will see that in the recipe I have noted that you may have to compromise on the length of the over-tail because of the availability of long enough marabou and that is what I have had to do here. Just thought I would show the finished fly here I remain very confident in this 10 cm (4 inch) long fly even with the compromised over-tail.

07.01.2022 A few flathead around during July mostly in the 50-55cm range.

06.01.2022 My original pregnant prawn was published in 2011. That prawn was 7cm in length was tied on a size #2 or #1/0 hook and was designed for targeting "bottom feeders such as bream, flathead, flounder, whiting, bonefish & tropical trigger fish". In 2019 I grossed that fly up to 9cm in length ona size #2/0 hook to target "barra, grunter, jacks and flathead in CQ estuary and harbor waters". More recently I have been trialing a 10cm version on a size #3/0 hook. That version is my current barra fly and it's different to the earlier versions not only in size but also because I have replaced half the body with flash blend and the hackle legs with rubber legs making it so much more durable. I will certainly now be trialing those enhancements on the 7cm and 9cm versions of my pregnant prawn. http://fishonfly.com.au//pregnant-prawn-size-30-10-cm-long

05.01.2022 Fishing season reminders NSW Bass Zero bag limit for bass and estuary perch starts 1 May and ends 31 August. Catch and release is allowed. The zero bag limit does not apply to fish in stocked freshwater impoundments, including Glenbawn Dam and Glennies Creek Dam in the Hunter Valley, Brogo Dam near Bega and Clarrie Hall and Toonumbar Dams in the northeast; anglers may continue to fish for these species in those waters all year round.... Trout Spawning season starts 1 May in the Snowy Mountains and special rules apply to the Thredbo River and its tributaries and the Eucumbene River and its tributaries (upstream of the Lake Eucumbene dam wall and including Providence Portal). A minimum size limit of 50 cm, daily bag limit of one and possession limit of two trout will apply to these rivers from 1 May to the end of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Annual closure on fishing in trout streams for NSW will be in place from Tuesday after the Queen’s Birthday weekend and re-opens on the October long weekend. Trout dams remain open to fishing throughout the year. When the season opens again in October, a minimum size limit of 25 cm, daily bag limit of two and possession limit of four trout again applies to the Thredbo and Eucumbene Rivers and other fly and lure only waters in NSW. Murray cod Season closed in NSW from 1 September to 31 November, except Copeton Dam. Eastern Freshwater Cod The annual three month fishing closure of the Mann and Nymboida Rivers and their tributaries comes into effect 1 August to 31 October. All fishing in the specified area is prohibited to enable the endangered Eastern Freshwater Cod to spawn uninterrupted during its breeding season. Eastern Freshwater Cod are totally protected throughout NSW regardless of where or when they may be found. Murray crayfish Closed all year other than the following waters between 1 June and 31 August each year inclusive: (a) Murrumbidgee River between the Hume Highway road bridge, Gundagai and Berembed Weir near Ganmain and (b) Murray River from 130 below Hume Weir near Albury to the Newell Highway road bridge at Tocumwal

04.01.2022 This Articulated Swimmer fly, when dressed in Qantas colours is like candy for Rock Cod. Here is how to tie it: http://fishonfly.com.au/wp/articulated-swimmer-qantas... it’s relatively easy to tie and it’s caught everything from Barra to Bream. If you’re having trouble getting started with your salt water fly fishing journey, or just need a little more practice, tie up one of these flies on a #2/0 hook, or one of your own flies dressed in red and white and fish it on an intermediate or sinking line along either natural rocky structure or man made rock walls etcetera.

04.01.2022 Managed an outing on Friday and had no trouble catching a few pike on my wire trace set up but this time there was no interest from any close by Spanish mackerel say la vie. I still had a great time and as well as the pike I managed three feisty GT’s and my first yellow emperor on fly. The wire trace set up with the fairly heavy #4/0 fly turned out to be a bugger to cast and may have been spooking bigger fish so I went back to connecting my flies direct to my 30lb Maxima Ultra-green leader just before catching the yellow emperor.

04.01.2022 Invasive turtle species spreading around Sydney North American red-eared slider turtles are spreading in the Sydney region, threatening native turtle populations by competing for food and nesting sites. They are considered one of the world’s worst invasive species of waterways, breeding rapidly and carrying exotic diseases. They can spread salmonella bacteria to people, pets and other animals. Unlike native turtles they are also aggressive and will bite if handled.... Hundreds have been found so far in the Sydney basin and DPI is using trained detection Springer Spaniels to search for them. The turtles have been illegally imported, and the sale or keeping of them is illegal. As a reflection of the biosecurity risks it presents, the red-eared slider turtle is classified as a Prohibited Dealing under the Biosecurity Act 2015. It is an offence to keep this species unless authorised, for example under the Exhibited Animals Protection Act 1986 or Animal Research Act 1985. In 2020 NSW DPI officers found 90 red-eared slider turtles and two alligator snapping turtles being illegally kept in one backyard in Sydney’s south-west. A Milperra man was convicted but the fine was just $4950 plus DPI’s investigative costs which totalled $2405.72. For more information including how to identify, go to this link. The public is are advised that if you see one, call DPI on 1800 680 244.
