21.01.2022 Have you ever wondered about Dry Needling??? You may have heard of a treatment called dry needling and wondered what it is or if it’s something that may be right for you. While the name of the procedure might sound intimidating, dry needling is safe and often a very effective technique for people with certain musculoskeletal conditions. A thin monofilament needle is used to penetrate the skin and treat underlying muscular trigger points for the management of neuromusculoskele...tal pain and movement restrictions. So, what is a trigger point? A trigger point is a local contracture or tight band in a muscle fiber that can disrupt function, restrict range of motion, refer pain or cause local tenderness. When dry needling is applied to a dysfunctional muscle or trigger point, it can decrease banding or tightness, increase blood flow, and reduce local and referred pain. Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture. It uses similar tools, but that’s where the similarities end. Dry needling is performed by different practitioners with different training. Acupuncture is based on Eastern medicine. Dry needling was established by Western medicine and is used in the treatment of pain patterns, postural changes, movement impairments and functional reduction. Dry needling treats muscle tissue, and its goal is to reduce pain, deactivate trigger points and restore function. It rarely is a standalone procedure. At Alive Family Chiropractic, it is performed alongside chiropractic adjustments as an additional treatment therapy. Dry needling can be used for a wide variety of musculoskeletal issues, such as shoulder, neck, heel, hip and back pain. Research indicates dry needling is a safe and effective approach for treating and managing pain. It must be administered by a practitioner who is certified to use the technique. Dr Emma completed her basic training in the UK back in 2011. She has since undertaken a further qualification in advanced dry needling techniques. If you think dry needling might be for you please do not hesitate to contact the practice for further details. alivechiropractic.com.au

09.01.2022 How has your sleep been lately? Are you getting to sleep easily or finding it hard to fall asleep? Perhaps the answer could be in the lights we are using and exposing ourselves to. Different colours of light have different energy. Visible light has a spectrum from purple to red with the purple and blue light having the most energy. Traditionally blue light has been used to wake our bodies up. The majority of blue light occurs in nature from the sun. That’s great as ther...e is a natural change in the light energy as the sun comes up and goes down. This allows our bodies to get the correct light energy at the correct time. It has allowed us to develop a sleep and wake cycle known as our circadium rhythm. These days we have so many artificial sources of blue light which may be confusing our bodies and messing around with our circadium rhythm, and the sad thing is these sources are becoming more and more a part of our lives. Blue light sources include: LED lighting TV Computers Phones and tablets The problem is that we are now exposing ourselves to this wakeful blue light in the evening when we traditionally got very low amounts of red light. Think about it, throughout most of our existance the only light that we ever had at night was fire light or candle light. Then came the electric light and now these are almost all LED light. Add an unhealthy dose of direct blue light from the screens and phones we look at and we have a recipe for a confused circadium rhythm. And the trend is alarming. Adults spend an average of 9 hours and 22minutes in front of a screen. And kids 8 to 12 on average 4 hours and 36 minutes per day. Blue light has also been blamed for increased macular degeneration. The scary thing is we are not sure of the true effects just yet. So what is a solution? Blue light glasses are available and it is a good idea to wear these in the evenings if you need to be on the computer or are on your phone. But perhaps the best method is to try to stay off devices in the evening as much as possible. Light a fire or a candle, get your book out and enjoy the most natural sleep you have in ages.

06.01.2022 When was the last time you stepped out your front door and explored around your local 'backyard'? The winter months makes it a little harder to feel motivated to move. Let's face it, who wants to jump out of a nice warm bed, and walk in the fresh cooler air? Yet this is the perfect time of year to explore the bushwalks in your local area. Once you get the momentum and make it a brisk walk, you'll never even notice the cold! Grab a jumper, gloves and put your runners on and get moving - your body will love you for it! Snap us a pic of your nature walks this weekend! #motivate, #Burleighhill, #chiropractic, #GoldCoast, #nature, #thegreatoutdoors
