18.01.2022 Project Patrol Update Locked And Loaded With Project Patrol's delivery date looming we have been busy rebuilding the front end due to axle seal weeps. The decision to change diff ratios from 3.5:1 to 3.9:1 was made mainly to combat the larger tyres and to help with towing the caravan, but also helps with down hill engine braking and can even improve economy in many vehicles. While the diff centres were out an ARB airlocker was fitted to the front with new bearings and the rea...r LSD was tightened. The front end was reassembled with new swivel hub bearings, gaskets and seals. Glad that bits over, time to spark it up and fit the ARB high output compressor, dual battery, bcdc charger, all requested anderson plugs and outputs, winch key switch and tidy up many years of wiring upgrades done to project patrol that just aren't up to standard and in some cases are unsafe. With the big 4.8 petrol stuffed in the engine bay there is very little room for upgrades like compressors and auxiliary batteries, so every bit of spare space is used. Lucky Lou made his decision to set up the auxiliary battery in the rear of the vehicle, great decision as it also ensures longer battery life due to the reduced heat. All cables are run, harnesses are made and all required circuit protectors are added. The charger should always be as close to the aux battery as possible, so it too is mounted to the battery box in the rear. Time to fit the new Redarc Tow Pro Elite electronic brake controller, what a sexy bit of kit they are, once set to auto mode it's set and forget and you safely brake every time, great peace of mind. With all wiring finished, diff ratios changed, air locker fitted, winch and bullbar ready for action with new synthetic rope, suspension all sorted and ready for maximum traction for the new mud tyres, it's time to clean up, complete 4wd service and sadly hand over the keys to the new owner, one very excited Lucky Lou. Thanks again to Lou and Deb for the opportunity to work on Project Patrol. From the search for the right car, through the build, all the way to handing the keys over you have been a dream to deal with. Thanks for making it such a great experience, and can't wait to see you around the campfire. See more

14.01.2022 Introducing Project Patrol After selling his last four wheel drive, and being hit by the 4WD bug pretty hard a customer asked us to help find him a new 4WD and set it up for him. As we worked through the purpose of the vehicle, and customer wish list. The decision was made the the vehicle be ... a GU 4.8 auto patrol, as the vehicle is not a daily driver and will be used for some towing duties as well some club 4WD trips. Our customer, let's call him Lucky Lou, had an extensive wish list. After discussions with Mrs Lucky Lou decisions were made as to the upgrades list as follows. Winch bullbar/winch, dual battery, uhf, capable suspension, front diff lock, air compressor, mud tyres and as many other goodies that can be packed in. With a three month time line decided on and the Christmas break upon us we had time to sort through hundreds of ads looking for that perfect needle in the hay stack. At last in early January a Gumtree ad payed off with the perfect GU Patrol 4.8 auto base vehicle. It was a 2003 series 3 STL with 200,000 Ks never on gas and had had the auto just done. Complete with ARB alloy roof rack and awnings. Over the next couple of weeks we will be updating Project Patrols progress as we start Lucky Lou's wish list.
14.01.2022 Project Patrol Update Lucky Lou Goes Up In The World With Project Patrol now safely registered in its new owners name, time to get to work.... The decision has been made to run 285/75R16 BF Goodrich KM2 mud tyres, so our suspension was chosen to clear these tyres and support the extra weight Project Patrol was going to cop with the steel bullbar, winch, dual batteries and all the additions Lucky Lou has in mind for the future. A Dobinsons suspension kit complete with Flexi coils got the nod. With extra long shock absorbers chosen the adjustable sway bar links are set up to maximise the down travel, extra 4 inches of droop over standard suspension. Patrol is fitted with new steering damper, castor correction bushes and all brake lines and breathers extended to suite improved wheel travel. Our range of tyres in this size, even in the mud tyre segment is quite large and we are spoilt for choice. KM2s from BF Goodrich top the list for Project Patrol due to their on road good manners and off road bad manners, look the part too. Due to our Patrols SRS airbags a suitable compliant bullbar was required. With no secondhand items in good enough condition available, a new commercial bar complete with winch cradle was purchased and it replaced the tired genuine alloy one that offered very little protection from an animal strike. A TJM winch was mounted and the control box hidden under the right wing of the bullbar with just the remote input recessed into the bar. Next week we gear up with some diff upgrades complete with diff lock and ratio change. Please share and comment on what you think should be Project Patrols next upgrades.
