25.01.2022 ? This can be as simple as taking seeds out of watermelon every-time you have it, commenting that you don’t want watermelons to grow in your belly. Or stating that you don’t enjoy wasting time cooking a meal. You don't have to eat everything, rather be aware of your actions and behaviours around foods as this impacts your child’s opinion.... Make meal-time fun and involve your children to help prepare meals. Comment positively about foods such as the colours of the dish are as pretty as a rainbow, or I can smell it is going to be flavoursome by adding those fresh herbs.

22.01.2022 Let's Celebrate World Diabetes Day!! The theme this year (very fittingly) is: Nurses Make the Difference. There's a lot of misunderstanding around the causes and management of diabetes. It can be overwhelming and mentally exhausting, so making sure you have a great support team (with a care nurse, diabetes educator, GP and dietitian) can make the difference!... Find out your risk of type 2 diabetes here: https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/risk-calculator Here is a beautiful video from 2015 that breaks down some myths and stigma around diabetes. https://youtu.be/jjNbzaJuquU

20.01.2022 Happy Dietitian's Day to our two lovely dietitians! What can you expect from your dietitian appointment? 1.Expect to do most of the talking- thinking about what works for you and developing your own strategies to meet your goals... 2. Expect to receive some education that might help fill in any gaps you may have 3. Expect to make small, gradual changes which are more sustainable than radical diet overhauls 4. Don't expect a strict meal plan to follow- research has shown time and time again that meal plans only work short term 5. Expect to have to practice some new skills around eating, choosing and preparing foods in between appointments Have you seen a great dietitian? We would love to hear what you liked about them!
20.01.2022 Sometimes negativity around R U OK? Day comes up on social media because shouldn't this be the case every day? Much like other special days, for example, Mother's/Father's day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, it would be nice if we showed appreciation for our parents everyday or we supported awareness for breast cancer every day. But, our mental load (i.e. all the things we think about) is already high and it’s impossible to consider all of the things society t...ells us we should be thinking aboutdaily! Hello burnout anyone?! With so much happening in our lives, days like R U OK? Day are simply a gentle reminder for us to pause and reflect on not only on the well-being of those around us, but also checking in with our own well-being. R U OK?

19.01.2022 Flat feet (termed pes planus) is a very common concern for parents in their children from a young age. For a lot of children, having flat feet can be considered normal and very much a part of their normal development.... Occasionally, however, flat feet can be a sign of an underling issue. Common causes of flat feet in children include: Normal child development and growth Joint hypermobility Structural (bone) deformity Soft tissue (muscle) deformity Low muscle tone / muscle spasticity ? If you are concerned about your child’s feet or development then we would recommend making an appointment to see our Podiatrists. We recommend that if your child is frequently complaining of sore feet, or has a history of tripping/clumsiness, then having a Podiatry review may be beneficial. ? Absolutely not! At All in one health we pride ourselves on providing the most evidence based treatment, and in the case of children with flat feet, a lot of the time treatment is not necessary. A general foot check is always good to just make sure there are no small concerns with your children’s feet. Our Podiatrists are available five days a week, Monday to Friday, and conveniently till 7:30pm on both Wednesday’s and Thursday’s. If you have any questions about whether we would be able to help, please don’t hesitate to call us on 5499 0345!

12.01.2022 . A few months ago my daughter came back from day care stating that she couldn’t eat seeds anymore as they would grow in her belly. Childrens minds think of thing literally so rather than telling children stories, thinking that this will encourage them to eat, rather keep to the facts and assist their learning. One day the child will learn the truth and this will only reduce their respect to you. I had to explain to my daughter that seeds were full of fibre which assist with keeping her full, giving her energy to play and assisting her stools to come out without pain. She is now happy to eat seeds again and couldn’t wait to tell her friends that they were wrong :’)

09.01.2022 Hummus...hommus...hommous? However you spell it, this cauliflower version makes for a lighter, creamier dip with the added benefit of nutrient-packed cauliflower. **Two garlic cloves makes quite a garlicky dip and I recommend starting with one clove first (or keep it at two cloves and you may not need to remind people to keep their 1.5 metres from you!)... How can you use it: 1. As a dip 2. As a spread on bread or wraps 3. As a fancy smear under a delicious salad (pictured: beetroot, fetta, mixed seeds and rocket salad) 4. With meats/chicken/fish 5. Instead of a dollop of cream/sour cream in a soup
08.01.2022 Be considerate of your child without catering to them. Ensure that there is at least one food at the table that your child always or sometimes eats. Studies show that it can take children up to 32 steps to accept a food, from seeing the food for the first time, tolerating the food on the plate, touching the food, smelling the food, licking the food all the way to chewing and swallowing the food.... So, try new foods 1 at a time and let the child become familiar with the food at their own pace. Once you acknowledge this process, understanding your childs food-related behaviour is easier. 05.01.2022 Did you know that it is national diabetes week? If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, an annual foot check with a podiatrist is recommended. Why... Diabetes and high sugar levels can increase your risk over time to certain lower limb health problems. These include. 1. Decreased circulation (the blood flow to your feet) 2. Decreased sensation (ability to feel in your feet) As your ability to feel and your circulation diminishes overtime with diabetes, this can predispose us to wounds and infections. With diabetes, our body finds it harder to fight these infections and heal correctly, thus making it important to have our feet checked. If it’s been a while since your last check up, or you are new to diabetes, book in to see our podiatrists, we would love to help!

04.01.2022 ? Children are not as big as you, they do not need the same amount of food. By plating too much food for your child, you may make them feel overwhelmed before they even start eating. A child's preference to food is very individualised, but it is best to never plate more than recommended.... Come and see the dietitians at All in One Health if you are unsure on a child's serving size. Some ideas for managing child's preferences to plating can be: Allowing the child to arrive at the table to an empty plate and you plating it up in front of them Serve a small amount of food then have the option for additional serves once the amount plated is consumed. Remember that there is a Division of responsibility when it comes to food: It is the parent's job is to decide , food is offered. It is the child's job is to decide they will eat the meal or snacks offered.
04.01.2022 ? Children are distracted easily and if you are having issues with your child eating at meal-time it may be because of the environment. Some tips to improve the eating environment is to; - Have a designated eating area, such as a dinner table. - Background noise can be distracting so turn off the television and electronics.... - Keep the table free from clutter - Pack the toys away before meals so that they are not visible during meal-time - Have a meal-time routine such as setting the table - Have a well-lit environment as this can help making food more colourful and appealing - Stay seated during meal-time (if you are getting up and downs from the table, your children are more likely to also) - Try not to worry about mess - Give the child time to eat without rushing them, do this by staying seated at the table until everyone is finished. - Be calm, supporting and positive. Your child feels your attitude. See more
04.01.2022 Congratulations to one of our dietitians, Kelly, who has had an abstract published on the research she completed in 2019. She investigated the impact of a dietitian service on weight loss in people with knee and hip osteoarthritis. Kelly and her team found that when these patients saw a dietitian regularly for 6 months they achieved greater weight loss!
03.01.2022 An interesting article shared with us from a follower in Western Australia! As a quick summary: In our attempts to be great parents (with a lot of judgement coming from other parents!) and trying to provide our children with a healthy diet, it can sometimes frame less healthy foods as "the forbidden fruit"- something highly desirable.... The result of this is that when given the opportunity to access these high value foods (think birthday cake, lollies at Halloween), some kids seem to eat uncontrollably! The article suggests a different approach: Giving children more regular opportunities to enjoy these foods without controlling how much they can have on theses occasions. The goal of this is that over time, children will: 1. Develop a better relationship with food (less likely to use as a reward or for comfort). 2. "Treat" foods will be less valuable because there is no fear that they may not have it again --> less likely to overeat it when they do have it. What are your thoughts?
