19.01.2022 Let's Celebrate World Diabetes Day!! The theme this year (very fittingly) is: Nurses Make the Difference. There's a lot of misunderstanding around the causes and management of diabetes. It can be overwhelming and mentally exhausting, so making sure you have a great support team (with a care nurse, diabetes educator, GP and dietitian) can make the difference!... Find out your risk of type 2 diabetes here: https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/risk-calculator Here is a beautiful video from 2015 that breaks down some myths and stigma around diabetes. https://youtu.be/jjNbzaJuquU

16.01.2022 . Getting kids active can be hard! Everyone knows that exercise is important, but this doesn’t mean it's easy, especially when you’re trying to get your kids outdoors and moving.... Think of some fun ways to get active as a family: - Go on a family hike and picnic- keep a look out for cool plants and insects or collect pretty fallen leaves! - Do a beach day and introduce your kids to some fun games like Fly (https://www.mumlyfe.com.au/how-to-play-the-game-of-fly/ ) -Play tag at the park -Shoot some hoops at the local court What other active ideas do you have?
14.01.2022 An interesting article shared with us from a follower in Western Australia! As a quick summary: In our attempts to be great parents (with a lot of judgement coming from other parents!) and trying to provide our children with a healthy diet, it can sometimes frame less healthy foods as "the forbidden fruit"- something highly desirable.... The result of this is that when given the opportunity to access these high value foods (think birthday cake, lollies at Halloween), some kids seem to eat uncontrollably! The article suggests a different approach: Giving children more regular opportunities to enjoy these foods without controlling how much they can have on theses occasions. The goal of this is that over time, children will: 1. Develop a better relationship with food (less likely to use as a reward or for comfort). 2. "Treat" foods will be less valuable because there is no fear that they may not have it again --> less likely to overeat it when they do have it. What are your thoughts?

Here are some ways to get them involved while you have age-appropriate discussions: 1. Let them grow (draw) their own moustache, or colour in some moustache designs... 2. Buy them something moustachey to wear 3. Pick a challenging exercise or activity to help build resilience See more

10.01.2022 . A few months ago my daughter came back from day care stating that she couldn’t eat seeds anymore as they would grow in her belly. Childrens minds think of thing literally so rather than telling children stories, thinking that this will encourage them to eat, rather keep to the facts and assist their learning. One day the child will learn the truth and this will only reduce their respect to you. I had to explain to my daughter that seeds were full of fibre which assist with keeping her full, giving her energy to play and assisting her stools to come out without pain. She is now happy to eat seeds again and couldn’t wait to tell her friends that they were wrong :’)

06.01.2022 . Understand the role all foods play in our diet. Educate your child that there are sometimes foods and everyday foods, explaining that the difference between them is that everyday foods are full of different nutrients that help take care of our bodies so that we can think clearly and function properly to play, where as sometimes foods are made by companies to offer different textures and tastes however these foods lack those really important nutrients... therefore you can enjoy them sometimes. If there is someone in your family with different health needs such as coeliac disease, explain to your children that even though everyday foods provide nutrients and can be enjoyed by most individuals, sometimes peoples’ bodies react differently to different nutrients as everyone is unique. This can mean that an everyday food needs to be substituted so that they can still enjoy the range of nutrients while caring for their bodies.
