25.01.2022 The new bridge on the Allora Golf Course is to be named the "Maher-Rickert" in memory of two of Allora's early golfing champions, Tommy Maher and Rita Rickert. Both Tommy and Rita started playing golf in 1934 at the Sunshine Golf Club at Hendon. They both won local golf championships as well as achieving success at district events. The bridge will be officially opened in a ceremony at the Allora Sports Club on 21st November 2020 commencing at 2.00 pm. Everyone is invited to the opening although names are required a week before so please call Wendy on 0437 342 870 if you would like to attend.

23.01.2022 There was great anticipation around week seven of the Tony Morris Tiling Night Bowls competition, with the "Maydan Grudge Match" between Are You Game Enough and Gina's Babies. 19.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who attended the bridge opening at the Sports Club last Saturday. We expected around 70 people and more than 100 turned up. It was fantastic to see so many original Allora people who made a huge effort to attend, particularly the older folk. Sincere congratulations to Michael, Greg, Lyn, Heather and Bec for the honour that has been bestowed on your father, mother and grandmother. The names Tommy Maher and Rita Rickert will now be firmly enshrined in the ...sporting history of our town. As I said on the day, the "Maher - Rickert" bridge is symbolic of what can be achieved by a small sports club in a small town during one of the most challenging years in our history. It is also symbolic that the bridge is dedicated to members of two of Allora's pioneering families. I hope and trust that all of Allora's citizens, not only golfers, recognise the "Maher - Rickert" bridge as a symbol of our town's resilience and determination and use it with pride. John Ellwood Secretary

18.01.2022 The Tony Morris Tiling Night Bowls Spring 2020 competition concluded last Tuesday with a thrilling finish to what has been another great season. As it turned out, "Are You Game Enough" held off a fast finishing "Three of Us" to win their second competition in the past three seasons. Greg, Sandy and Dennis are pictured with the winners trophy. Last season's winners "Gina's Babies" have been re-named "Flash in the Pan" after finishing well down the table. The Sports Club provid...ed the traditional BBQ for players and their families to wind up the season and Cheree prepared a sumptuous Pavlova for dessert. The Night Bowls competition is getting bigger and better and the quality of bowls improves every season. Thanks to all our fantastic sponsors and volunteers. The Summer 2021 season kicks off on the 19th January. If anyone is looking for a game of bowls, please call Patto on 0491 128 689 and he will try to get you into a team. Green fees will be $10.00 from next year. Bowls Membership remains at $20.00 for Adults and $10.00 for Juniors and it must be paid by 31st January 2021. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you all at the Club on the 19th for what will be another cracking Night Bowls Season. See more

17.01.2022 Due to a big corporate golf day on Saturday, 14th November, any social golfers will need to hit off before 8am or after 4pm on the day. Please call Wendy on 0437 342 870 for clarification.

13.01.2022 Michael Mahers speech from the Maher-Rickett bridge opening Welcome to everybody and thankyou for coming on this special day for myself and also for the Patterson and Bolzan families. The Sunday morning that John Ellwood from the Sports Club came and spoke to me about naming the bridge after Dad I could not believe that he would be remembered in this way for his achievements in golf. It is certainly many years since Dad played golf and in fact most of his success came well be...fore I was born. I was aware that Dad was a very good golfer due to the number of trophies that we had in the house while I was growing up. A couple of days after talking to John I bumped into Heather Bolzan down the street and we talked for quite a while about the history of golf in Allora, in particular the success that both my Dad and Heather’s Mum had enjoyed. It was clear to me that Rita must have been a champion golfer and so I spoke to John and suggested that we include Rita’s name on the bridge. John confirmed that Rita was indeed a Championship winning golfer and he agreed that it would be a good idea to name the bridge after both Dad and Rita. Thanks to John and Wendy and the team at the Sports Club for everything they have done to make this day happen. I clearly remember the day that John’s Dad Lex arrived in town as the new Shire Clerk. Lex was determined to see Allora go ahead and not long after he took over as Shire Clerk, he made the statement that he would ensure that every farmer in the Allora Shire had a bitumen road to their front gate. It only took a few years for Lex to make good on his promise. Thanks also to Arcpoint, Matt Walker, Osborns Engineers, Bellingham Cranes and anybody else associated with designing and building the bridge. It really looks fantastic and is a credit to all concerned. It is always nice to drive past the golf course and look at what has been achieved in a few short years from when it was simply a grass paddock. I am happy to have been involved in helping improve the course over the years. Congratulations Greg, Lyn, Heather and other members of the Rickert, Patterson and Bolzan families. This honour to your Mum is richly deserved.

11.01.2022 Due to Friday's inclement weather, Percy's Duck Run was not played. Although Sunday's weather was not much better, a small field of 11 golfers contested the Railway Hotel Monthly Mug on Sunday. Neil Chandler played the wind the best to record 35 points to street the field and win the day from John E on 29 points. Neil also won the pin shot on 8/17 and the long putt. Kev won the approach on 3/12. All other pins/approaches were cleanskins. Thanks Robyn. This Saturday the Allora... Golf Club will host the VW Scramble and we expect a number of out of town teams to show up to test themselves on our course. We are hoping for a strong contingent of local teams to support Club Captain Aaron and hopefully win this prestigious event. There will be a chance to win a VW Motor Car with a hole-in-one and the winners will progress to regional and maybe even National finals. Lets get behind Aaron and get as many teams as possible for Saturday. Register online or call Aaron on 0448 665 999. Get to the club by 9.00 am on Saturday for a 10.00 am shotgun start. Sunday will be the Allora Pharmacy Monthly Medal. See you on the links. See more

09.01.2022 Percy's Fruit Duck Run. Winner Rod with 22 points from Tommy Brown on 20. Tommy also won the approach and both pins were won by the convalescing Nick. Great to see you back Nick. Thanks Percy. The Allora Open Weekend was a great success with good fields both days. Congratulations to Matt Burgess, a scratch marker from Crows Nest who won his second consecutive Allora Open. We also had 3 "plus" markers in the field this year. Local winners were Lenny, Macca, Andrew and new gol...fer Mick Loan. Well done all. Best was Tommy Morris who, playing off a handicap of 22, shot a 80 off the stick to net 58 and score 42 stableford points. Tommy was the runaway winner of the Ken and Sue Wilson Trophy. Welcome to "B" Grade Tommy, although I don't think you will be there long, particularly when you start making those putts. Next Friday will be the Duck Run and Sunday the Allora Butchery 4BBB. With the staggered starts on Sunday, comps will now be run like the Duck Run. Write down your name, fill out your card, organise a group then hit off. 08.01.2022 Residents Complaint It was extremely disappointing to read comments apparently posted by Lance Ziebarth this morning (8/11/20) on the "Best Little Town on the Downs" page. In the interests of clarity, I will quote the comments as they appeared with no change to grammar or spelling. Mr Ziebarth's comments were "Thanks to allora sports club for a great function last night the neglect of people that have to work early load music till 1.30 people walking around after carrying on ...like they only one's not very impressed not the first time think about others" The Sports Club did host a function last night with all but four of the guests being from Warwick. All the Warwick visitors left at 9.30 pm with most being picked up in maxi taxis and the others leaving in private vehicles. The remaining guests left at 10.00 pm and I will guarantee that they all went straight home. The music was not loud and was turned off at 9.45 pm. I can assure all the citizens of Allora that the Sports Club and our guests always consider neighbours and we never operate past our licence of 12 midnight. This is the first complaint we have received in my 8 years of being secretary of the Allora Sports Club and the way it was made was certainly not how we do things in this town. If there have been previous occasions of excessive noise or unsociable behaviour by Sports Club guests, why weren't they brought to our attention at the time? In what has been a most difficult year for the hospitality industry comments like this, which border on slanderous, certainly do not help. Ours is a community club which exists to benefit our members and the Allora Community in general. If anyone has any feedback on how the Club operates, positive or negative, please call me on 0427 425 256. John Ellwood Secretary Allora Sports Club

05.01.2022 Another good field for Friday's Percy's Fruit Duck Run with Garny winning with 21 points in a countback from Jack. Pin was won by Tommy Morris and approach by Benny. Long putt was won by Jim. Rundown Ray, Rod, Aaron and Frizz. Thanks Percy. Sunday was the Allora Pharmacy Monthly Medal with Rod winning his third medal for the year with a net 69. Runner up was Doreen with a net 72. Neil won the pin shot on 4/13 and Sparkie won 8/17. Rod won the approach and Neil the long putt. ...Thanks Allora Pharmacy. 03.01.2022 Local rep footballer and recently married golfer, Ty Gardner has offered to sponsor the golf this Sunday the 8th of November. The course is in absolutely immaculate condition and low scores should be the order of the day. See you on the links.

03.01.2022 Percy's Fruit Duck Run was won by Kev with 23 points in a countback from last week's winner Ty. Balls in the rundown went to Nick and Tommy M.
