Correcting crowded teeth will certainly create that aesthetic smile we all dream of, but what you may not know is that by aligning teeth, we also improve their health and longevity. 1. Crowded teeth are hard to clean Ever noticed that brushing your cramped teeth is tricky? Or that food gets stuck in there at the most inconvenient of times? Youre not alone. Crowded teeth are HARD to keep cl...ean. Toothbrushes are not designed to brush between teeth that overlap and even flossing effectively can be challenging. Because oral hygiene is so much more difficult with crowded teeth, bacteria tends to build up in those hard to clean spaces potentially leading to bad breath, gum disease and decay: not ideal for a healthy, happy smile. 2. Premature wear The forces of biting over time create a lot of wear on the edges of our teeth. When teeth are aligned correctly, this doesnt cause any problems because all teeth share the forces evenly. When teeth are twisted or pushed out on unusual angles these teeth will wear down prematurely: damaging enamel beyond repair. Can worn-out teeth be built up by a dentist? Absolutely. But if crowding is corrected early enough, thankfully, this premature wear can often be avoided. Prevention is better than cure, wouldnt you agree? 3. Gum damage can mean unstable teeth Gums, the soft tissue surrounding our teeth, are what help hold our teeth in place. And as adults, once we lose gum tissue, it can never be recovered. An unfortunate consequence of crowding is that gum tissue can become stretched when teeth are pushed outward. This stretched gum begins to recede and the surrounding teeth become less stable. By bringing teeth back to the correct position, the strain on the gum is reduced and the teeth remain supported. Straight, stable teeth, are teeth that will last a lifetime (with proper care, of course!).

01.01.2022 Don’t let their small size fool you, elastic bands pack a big punch when it comes to correcting bites. When worn consistently, elastics place consistent force on your teeth, helping them move into the ideal biting position. The exact position of the elastics will depend on the treatment plan Dr Mike creates for you, but generally you can expect the bands to attach on the top aligner at the front and the lower aligner at the bottom for treating an overbite or the reverse if y...ou have an underbite. Sitting snugly down the inside of the cheek, elastics are discrete and comfortable. You simply take the elastics out to eat and brush and change them over for a new set every day. Dr Mike reviews the progress of your bite correction regularly and will advise when you no longer need to wear the elastics. Do you wear elastic bands with your aligners or braces? Do you find them easy or tricky to use?

01.01.2022 Your child has started getting their first adult teeth. Some of them are coming in on a strange angles and others are twisted in the wrong direction. You make a mental note (alongside trying to remember to buy more milk and submit school camp forms) to find out what age your child should see an orthodontist. According to the Australian Society of Orthodontists, the best age for a child to see a registered specialist orthodontist for an assessment is between 8 and 10 years ol...d. While many children will not require orthodontic treatment at this age, this allows Dr Mike to determine if early interceptive treatment would be beneficial. If early treatment is not needed, then we will continue to monitor your child (free of charge) at 6 or 12 monthly intervals to ensure treatment can commence at the ideal time of growth and development (often around 11-13 years).
