22.01.2022 The new Electro Harmonix 7025 (12AX7)High Gain Ultra low noise/micro-phony vacuum tubes have arrived & upon initial tests presents very,very low noise in high gain tube amplifier or preamp circuits & will now be incorporated in most tube amp repairs/service here at #Almach.

22.01.2022 Fi-Sonic 30WB Vacuum Tube Amplifier Another for the "They dont make like this anymore category" This 2 Channel/tone & tremolo ccts Class A self/cathode bias,does 20 watts output,c/w MSP Alnico 12PQB Speakers. Made in Sydney by DMA (has A&R transformers made in Melb?) & HSC Timbers Industries. A very rare & interesting model made in the 60s. Purchased at an auction for $10(many moons ago).Wow!

A few examples here Rola/Celestion 12"Alnico speakers(from original 1961 Vox AC30),JBL2418 LF Driver from JBL4411 Studio Monitors(Ex-Channel 9) & a pair of Altec 811-8A 15" LF Drivers for Hi Fi.

19.01.2022 Almach Custom 20 Mk1C Class A Combo guitar amplifier rolling out after final playing test.This one done in Vanilla tolex,wheat grill cloth & gold pipe. Built from the highest quality components,custom designed & locally made transformers. These custom hand built amplifiers are inspired from the early 50s designed vacuum tube amps from the USA using octal tubes for both pre & power amp sections. The Mk1C Combo below features both Pentode preamp (6SJ7) & Triode preamp (6SL7) d...riving a pure class A 20 watt power amp using 1 x 6SL7 2 x 6L6 & GZ34/5AR4 power section.This design allows the amp to be run at high gain/vol settings enabling the player to control the amount of output stage saturation at lower sound pressure levels, this one matched up with a WGS Blackhawk alnico speaker, fun to tame, best hand fed by your favorite classic/vintage guitar. 19.01.2022 "Bandmaster-Amp AB763" This example 1964 Black Face Bandmaster-Amp Fender Fullerton California. Back in the lab for service, update old components & a re-valve. These cloth wired amps continued into the early 70s but the wiring technique was not adopted by CBS beyond 73 going by the vast number of fender amps I have serviced.

19.01.2022 Gibson EH150 1937 Combo Very interesting old Gibson combo from the 30's has magically found its way to me for evaluation/restoration & as can be seen here its going to need some serious TLC. Using a complement of 6J7 Pentodes for preamp (tubes on left with "top cap" input grid)... 6N7 twin triode driving a pair 6L6GC output valves,5U4/5AS4 Power section. 6J7 became 6SJ7 in later years (without TC) & a 6N7 became a 6SN7 which is well know in many vacuum tube amplifier designs. The Alnico speaker is of field coil type design meaning there is no magnet? the magnetism required is generated by energizing the field coil from the amplifiers power supply,also incorporates a "hum bucking tap" to minimize hum/noise levels using the same principle as a hum bucking guitar pick-up.

18.01.2022 Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Solo Head 120V to 240V Conversion & Upgrade. This has got to be my most favorite modification I have been doing to these famous amplifiers ever since their inception. Not only does it get your amp running on 240 volts but it allows me to design a transformer to full specification,unleashing the inherent dynamic response that these amplifiers have always possessed. As can be clearly seen here in the difference in the lamination stack sizes.

16.01.2022 Ampeg B15 Flip top Bass Tube Amp 1965. This lovely example is a B15NF in the the lab for 240 volt conversion & full restoration. A little tricky changing out transformers on the models but well worth the effort & expense. Same tube complement as Almach Custom 20 but is fixed bias with an output power of 35WRMS. Were back to the Motown bass tone we all know & love!

15.01.2022 *FYI* WARNING! Buying "Matched Tube Sets" Online. This is the third amplifier chassis bought to my electronics lab with blown fuses within in the last six weeks?? that has had the output tubes replaced with "matched vacuum tubes"purchased from an online or music store.This has caused the failure of 2 of the new tubes due to red plating/excessive anode current(incorrect bias setting) as can be easily seen as burn stain on the anodes,not only rendering them useless,it usually c...ooks/frys other associated components(most modern tube amplifiers are constructed with copper tracks on printed circuit boards=they just evaporate!),possible arch over on vacuum tube sockets & at worst failure of the output transformer. Im not surprised that not everyone is aware that your output valves require careful & correct circuit parameters in order function properly & last the required service period in your amplifier. Im also not surprised that not everyone realizes that when you purchase vacuum tube devices online or from the music store you do not know how many different people/dealers have handled & shipped such sensitive devices which impacts on its mechanical stability,in other words "they were matched when they left the factory but by the time they get to you,who knows what there going to do when put them in your amp?? & as can be seen above they can go BANG! Just the thing we dont do to nice amps! When I service a Vacuum tube amplifier,it is highly scrutinized in a technical manner both mechanically & electrically in order to determine if the correct circuit parameters exist before a new tube set can be fitted & setup,further= the vacuum tubes I supply & fit to customer amplifiers are shipped directly from the factory where they are matched & packed,the next person that handles them is me! I then test all the matching & re-match into sets quads pairs etc ready to fit to customers amplifiers which I have been doing since 1983 for the above obvious reasons. The above chassis/example will have to be dismantled down to pcb level in order to inspect & replace faulty components,inspect pcbs,inspect tube sockets,test output transformer,power supply,etc,etc running up the repair costs sky high! If you are running tube sets as mentioned above I am happy to test & calculate the required dissipation,re-adjust your amps setup to suit & avoid an unexpected blown fuse & elevated repair turn around time/costs.

14.01.2022 OPERATION:Restoration=Fender BRONCO Two fine examples from the 60/70s. Single ended output stage 1 x 6V6 rated at 6 watts just enough to put a smile on any guitar players face! Same schematic as more common "Vibro Champ" a little more gain compared to the infamous "Fender Champ". On left Fender CBS 1974 Bronco & right Fender Fullerton 1969 Bronco-amp. Both in the lab for some long overdue TLC.

13.01.2022 RESTORATION RADFORD STA25 Vacuum Tube Stereo Hi Fi Amplifier Very rare & highly sought after,I have been repairing hifi tube amps for many years whether it be #Radford #Quad #Luxman #Leak #AudioResearch (just to mention a few!) this one come to me in a bad state of disrepair, burnt out components,a blown output transformer,psu inductor missing & heavily corroded chassis. Radford(UK) started designing amplifiers from as early as 1946,& commenced production in 1959,they exhibit... high linearity & very low distortion. Tube complement includes EF86 pentode,6U8A triode/pentode & a pair EL34s using both fixed & cathode bias(Class AB) to produce an output power of 25 watts. The output transformers are fully symmetrical(interleaved primary & secondary windings) & are wound in pairs to ensure matched left & right frequency response & were originally made by Partridge(UK)same as used in Hi Watt & early Vox Guitar Amps. This example restored to its original condition & performance here at #Almach. Also pictured here with its "little bro" the STA 15 Monoblock. See more

I have repaired a number of these amplifier over many years,a little tricky to work on, but well worth the effort! This one bought back to life with a output transformer rewind & a pair of 6DQ6B Vacuum tubes. Still owned by original buyer!
