22.01.2022 Great post about pain by @drjarodhalldpt! Do you know all these facts about pain? Pain is a complex experience influenced heavily by many factors, and felt and experienced very differently between individuals.... Whatever pain you feel, it is real, and is your pain! But it may be different to someone else’s pain. We call pain an experience because it is influenced by much more than just sensation from the body (nociception). To call it a sensation would be an over simplification. Previous life experience, stress levels, sleep quality and duration, thoughts and beliefs can all turn the volume up or down on pain, making it considerably better or worse! While nociception (signals from nerve receptors in the tissue) can tell the brain there is danger to the tissue, this is only one part of pain. And pain does not always mean tissue damage or injury. Think about performing a task in a calm happy state, and then the same task if you were stressed, panicked or scared. If you experienced pain, would it be the same? As you can see pain is far more complex than most people think (leg amputees can have leg pain)! Even things that people say can influence your pain. Would you feel better if you were told you had the back of an 80 year old? Or maybe your back is just a bit weak and tight. Even if a statement is not true it may influence your pain. Even getting an x-ray or scan can influence pain. It may give you piece of mind, or you may find it overwhelming and confusing. Often scans can show normal age related changes that appear scary if you haven’t seen them before. So what are some things you can do to influence the pain you experience. Controlling stress, and getting consistent sleep will help. And moving and exercising in ways you enjoy (and feel comfortable with) can make a huge difference! So now you know some more about pain, and the factors that influence it. What are some things you can try to improve your own pain? For further advice, questions or concerns, contact Alpha Physio today 32793871. #physiotherapy #physio #brisbanehealth #exercise #pain #brisbane #4074

18.01.2022 What is Progressive Overload? The basic premise of progressive overload is to SLOWLY INCREASE activity (or exercise) levels over time, in order to increase STRENGTH and RESILIENCE. As an example, let’s say you could only comfortably walk or run 2 km in one go. ... To progressively overload this activity, you might walk or run 2.0-2.3km, about 2-4 times a week. This might be challenging initially, and slightly uncomfortable, but in a couple of weeks, you will probably find walking 2km quite easy. To become even STRONGER, and more RESILIENT, you might increase this distance to 2.5-3.0km, 2-4 times a week, and gradually increase the distance until you are as strong as you want or need to be! Progressive overload can be applied to almost any activity eg. weight lifting, running, cycling, working after injury, or anything else you may have difficulty doing! What are some things you find difficult, that may get easier with progressive overload?

17.01.2022 WHY DO WE EXERCISE?!? Some times it can be difficult to see the point of exercise, especially if you don’t have goals in place. Some do it to get fitter, or stronger, or lose weight. Some do it to look better, or feel better physically and mentally.... These are all great reasons, but there is another, possibly more important reason that is often missed, or not talked about. IT ALLOWS YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE! Having a strong resilient body, allows you to do the things you love, the things you want to do, and the things you have to do. It is also an investment for the future. A strong foundation of fitness in early life, means you will be able to do more, for longer, as you get older! Find your own reasons for exercise, and start today to build yourself a better tomorrow. If you have difficulty exercising, or don’t know where to start contact Alpha Physio today! 32793871 #exercise #physiotherapy #fit #brisbane #sumner #jindalee #jamboreeheights

14.01.2022 Multi-segmental extension pattern! Do you spend most of your time sitting at a desk? Here’s a quick movement test to see what impact it can have on your back movement as a whole! The multi-segmental extension pattern is a part of the SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment). In this movement pattern we are looking for: ... - Shoulders staying above 170 flexion - Hips moving forward over toes - Shoulder blades moving back over heels - Having a neutral spinal curve. This simple movement pattern provides us with a picture of how the shoulder, neck, upper back, lower back, and hips all move together. And more importantly, it shows us how well you can control all these movements in a weight bearing position. If you have trouble performing this movement it may be your body telling you that it needs less time sitting, and more time getting looked after. Swipe to compare Nathan’s attempt to Simon’s.
