24.01.2022 Re-surfacing project. This was the start point of a recent epoxy re-surfacing and leak repair job of a 40 year old cement rendered pool. Over the next few posts I'll be walking through the project step by step. The story here was severe leaking and a worn out surface. After identifying a few sources of the leak, including some cracks, the tiles that went around the top of the pool were removed.

22.01.2022 Hi folks, I have seen an increase in cases of Black Spot Algae this year and thought I'd run through some treatment options for you. This algae is a deep rooted variety, with some resistances to low to mid levels of sanitizer and regular algaecides. It enjoys porous surfaces, so it will usually start on things like grout lines, aged plastics/silicones and older fibreglass surfaces. As the name suggests, it will appear black and in spots on the surface it is attached. In fact... any algae that is a solid black colour will more than likely be Black Spot. Treatment: Because it is deep rooted, removing Black Spot will more than likely be a multiple treatment process, especially if it has had a chance to establish. First, brush the affected areas with a firm bristled brush, preferably a stainless steel one (be careful not to damage the surface with metal brushes. Don't use if you think your pools surface type can't handle it). Next, increase and maintain your sanitizer levels to between 3.0ppm and 5.0ppm. Apply some granular chlorine directly onto the algae. Once it dies (it will turn a grey/white colour) brush the algae again. Repeat this process until all raised up or visible algae is removed. I would finally recommend adding a Black Spot Remover product to the pool to attack the exposed roots. Keep an eye on any returning spots over the next couple of months and maintain that high sanitizer level for that time. Cheers, Lachlan

16.01.2022 The great fall of leaves in our beautiful area seems to be here already! Might be time for a WinterKleen Leaf Cover! WinterKleen covers are made with a fine polypropylene mesh that is strong to survive the elements and also lightweight for easy handling. This type of pool cover protects your pool from leaves, dirt and debris and also allows water through into the pool.... These covers work best when stretched over your pool during long periods when your pool isn’t being used. Leaves and dirt that fall on the cover can be blown or swept off the cover. The finished cover stretches across your entire pool overlapping it by 20cms with tie down toggles about 80cms apart, anchored a further 20cms from the cover’s edge. The tie down toggles are easily pulled tight, one by one until taut. WinterKleen covers are available in blue, black, or green. A WinterKleen has an 8 year pro-rata warranty and is easily removed when it’s time to put on a Daisy solar pool cover. Interested? Give me a call to organise a free quote! 14.01.2022 Just a PSA to all local pool owners. It looks like mustard algae has returned in force again this year. Due to the wet and humid weather, which are ideal growing conditions. Mustard algae is a sanitizer resistant strain, making it difficult to remove sometimes. Since last weekend, I've been called out repeatedly to combat it. How to identify it: Mustard algae will start in shaded corners, or sharp crevices in your pool (often around stairs). It also likes solar blankets, beca...use of the cover. Generally it will start as a mustard coloured patch on the pool surface, but can start as water born and green, making it hard to identify. The easiest indicator is if you know your pool chemistry is well balanced and you still have algae growing. Solution 1: Brush the entire pool and run the filter as much as possible. Keep your sanitizer levels up during treatment. After brushing, add a phosphate remover product to pool. Over the following days monitor the pool for further growth and clean out any algae residue that might settle. Repeat process if the algae persists. You can combat it with certain algacides, but they are pretty harsh and I don't recommend it. This algae feeds on phosphates, so releasing them with the brush and then removing its food source is the most natural and effective option. Solution 2: Give me a call and I'll help you treat it. :) Cheers, Lachlan 0426 411 443
12.01.2022 *Winter Discount* Across Winter, Alpine Pools has discount rates on filter media change services. If your sand or glass in your pool/spa filter is due for a change out, now is the perfect time to get it done before Spring. Discount rate of $120+gst (down from $150) per service + sand or glass.... Sand in your filter should be changed out every 5 years and glass every 10 years. Aside from time, other signs the filter might need changing is flow fluctuation or poor filtration. This may cause large amounts of sediment or pieces of debris returning to the pool/spa. Contact Lachlan on 0426 411 443 to book a service!
11.01.2022 Re-surface project: Epoxy finishcoat in progress, applied to the first two walls. Photo (a bit too much shade) to show the difference between old and new.
10.01.2022 Re-surface project. The next step was to drain and pressure wash the pool. It quickly exposed multiple cracks and weaknesses in the surface. Each was exposed and opened in full. Holes were drilled through the pool at the end of each crack to prevent further damage during repair work.
10.01.2022 Merry Christmas folks!
09.01.2022 Just a PSA to all local pool owners again. It looks like mustard algae has come around for another outbreak this season. 09.01.2022 Re-surface project: With all the cracks exposed and ready for repair, the pools surface was sanded and roughed up with a grinder. Once clean the cracks were repaired with hydraulic cement. Two holes where a light and the main drain had once been also needed to be cut out and refilled with the cement. Once cured, the pool was ready for the final stage.
08.01.2022 Just my yearly PSA to all local pool owners regarding Mustard Algae. Plus, as an added bonus, Black Spot Algae appears to have been very common this year as well (I've made a separate post on combating it on our page). Mustard algae is a sanitizer resistant strain, making it sometimes difficult to remove. How to identify it: Mustard algae will start in shaded corners, or sharp crevices in your pool (often around stairs). It also likes solar blankets, because of the cover. This algae feeds on phosphates, so releasing them with the brush and then removing its food source is the most natural and effective option. Solution 2: This year has been the first where I've encountered Mustard Algae that has needed the addition of Tropical Algaecide to completely remove it. If you have made a good attempt with Solution 1 and the algae persists, you will need to purchase an algaecide designed to kill Mustard algae. Alternatively, give me a call and I'll help you treat it. :) Cheers, Lachlan 0426 411 443

02.01.2022 Just a heads up to everyone in the area. There has been a pretty severe mustard algae outbreak across the shire, probably due to the wet weather.
