25.01.2022 Cook will remain in Labor hands. Congratulations to the amazing Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook and her strong local team on this win. #TeamQLD

24.01.2022 Three years ago today. QILN Members gathered at the 2017 Queensland Labor State Conference in Townsville, with Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood. At the 2017 State Conference, the Australian Labor Party - Queensland branch, reaffirmed party rule changes that were passed at the 2016 State Conference, to include more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as candidates in State and Federal elections, and a treaty was included in the party platform for the first time.

23.01.2022 great to see sister Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook on campaign trail with Jerome and Jacob.

22.01.2022 On Monday, Barrister Joshua Creamer moved the admission of his mother, Aunty Sandra Creamer, to practice law in Queensland. It is believed that this is the first time that an Indigenous mother/son admission has occurred in any court in the country! Another amazing piece of Queensland Indigenous legal history! Both Joshua and Aunty Sandra are descendants of both the Kalkadoon and Waanyi people of North-West Queensland. Joshua has had a very distinguished legal career, becoming... one of the first Indigenous Barristers in the State of Queensland, and was an instrumental figure in the successful 2018 Palm Island class action case. Aunty Sandra has a long history of activism and advocacy, and has worked with Indigenous peoples from around the world and for a long time, has represented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. She can add becoming a lawyer to her to her list of amazing achievements! While both are not members of the Australian Labor Party, they both maintain a very close connection to Brisbane Labor politics. Mr Creamer is the husband, and Ms Creamer is the mother in law of the Brisbane City Council Deputy Opposition Leader, and Brisbane Labor Deputy Leader, Councillor Kara Cook - Morningside Ward. Congratulations to both of you, particularly Aunty Sandra on her admission, for achieving this wonderful piece of Queensland Indigenous legal history!

22.01.2022 2020 has been a year where our sense of community and our individual commitment to the collective good has taken centre stage. I am so proud to be a Queenslande...r, so grateful for the sacrifices so many have made to keep us all safe and so happy to live in the community I call home. Having the opportunity to represent the people of Algester is incredibly humbling and to be returned for a third term as we continue to manage impacts of the global pandemic is an absolute honour. Thank you for putting your trust in me. I will continue to work hard every day to help our community thrive. I’d like to thank my campaign team and the scores of volunteers who endured all kinds of weather to help with the election - you have all individually and collectively been amazing and I’m so very grateful for each and every one of you. I’d also like to acknowledge my opponents Nerissa Aitken - LNP for Algester Josie Mira - The Greens for Algester Wayne Stacey for algester- one nation. Although we disagree on policy positions I want to acknowledge that it takes a lot of personal sacrifice to put your hand up to run for elected office and I’m sure your families are very proud of you. And of course thank you to my beautiful family who have stood by me and supported me every day. I could not do even half of what I do without you. Thank you so much to you all x

22.01.2022 A big congratulations to Chansey Paech MLA, who has just been appointed as the Speaker of Northern Territory Legislative Assembly. A descendant of the Eastern Arrente, and Gurindji people, Chansey's appointment means that he has become both the first Indigenous person appointed as Speaker, and the first openly LGBTI Indigenous person appointed as Speaker, of any Australian Parliament.

22.01.2022 Queensland Indigenous Labor Network would like to wish our four Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queensland Labor candidates, best wishes for today's state election. Leeanne Enoch in Algester, Lance McCallum in Bundamba, Cynthia Lui in Cook and James Bambrick in Traeger, have been campaigning very hard over the past few months, and we hope that their hard work will pay off. Leeanne, Lance and Cynthia made history by becoming the largest cohort of Aboriginal and Torres St...rait Islander parliamentarians to serve concurrently in a single Queensland Parliamentary term, and fingers crossed, James may make that cohort even larger after tonight's result! We would also like to wish all Queensland Labor candidates across our state, all the very best, and hopefully a Palaszczuk Labor Government is returned, and Queensland Labor can continue to enact groundbreaking policy initiatives for Queensland's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Leeanne Enoch MP Lance McCallum MP - Labor for Bundamba Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook James Bambrick Labor for Traeger Annastacia Palaszczuk MP

22.01.2022 This week was the final sitting week of the 56th Queensland Parliament, and what a week it was! After a few years of tireless work and advocacy from Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook, on Tuesday, the second reading of the Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa (Torres Strait Islander Traditional Child Rearing Practice) Bill occured, and the bill was debated and subsequently passed. As a result, traditional Torres Strait Islander adoption practices are now legally recognised in Queensland...! Speaker Curtis Pitt MP, launched the Queensland Parliament's new Reconciliation Action Plan. Finally, on Wednesday, the Queensland Parliament commemorated the 20th anniversary of Queensland's recognition of our brothers and sisters from the South Sea Islander community. The next parliamentary sitting week won't happen until after the state election (which is being held on the 31st of October), but hopefully there is more to look forward to during the 57th Parliament!

16.01.2022 Yesterday, our patron, Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook, introduced the Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa (Torres Strait Islander Traditional Child Rearing Practice) Bill on the floor of Queensland Parliament. For many generations, Torres Strait Islander communities have had a community and family based approach to raising children, however, many of these practices have not been reflected in a non-Indigenous, contemporary legal framework, and documents such as birth certificates, f...ail to recognise the cultural significance of these practices. 'Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa' translates to for Our Children's Children, and the bill that was introduced yesterday aims to formally and legally recognise traditional Torres Strait Islander family practices, particularly practices relating to traditional adoption. While the recognition of traditional Torres Strait Islander family practices and adoption was an election commitment of the Palaszczuk Government back in 2017, this bill also draws on the tireless work of the Kupai Omasker Working Party, which has been advocating for the formal recognition of traditional Torres Strait Islander family practices since 1990. QILN would like to pay tribute to the work of Uncle Steve Mam, who helped form the Kupai Omasker Working Party, and who dedicated most of his life, advocating for this recognition to become a reality. Unfortunately, Uncle Steve Mam passed away in 2016, but his legacy rings true with the introduction of this bill. Queensland is very fortunate to be home to the Torres Strait Islands, and the tireless contributions of Torres Strait Islander people is very visible throughout our state. The introduction of yesterday's bill is another step in recognising the unique culture and customs of our state's First Nations people. 11.01.2022 23 August was the anniversary for a very important historic moment for Australia and Indigenous rights - Freedom Day Festival

11.01.2022 Sadly, Indigenous Australia and the ALP has lost a great man. Our condolences to sister Ngaree, her Mum, brother Jon and all her family at this time. There will be plenty written and said over coming days, deservedly so. His days at the NLC and then in the first Labor government to win office in the NT were full of significance. JAK was Indigenous Australia's first Cabinet Minister. And when his daughter was elected they became the first Indigenous Father/Daughter elected to Parliament.

11.01.2022 Respect on our own Lands. 52 years ago Gurindji Elder Mr Mick Rangiari spoke at an event hosted by Queensland Unions here in Brisbane. He was joined by Indigenous poet Mrs Kath Walker. On the 2nd September in 1968 Mr Rangiari made the case for Land Rights for Aborigines. Nine years it took. Nine years of campaigning to be respected. Whilst most people remember a photo with a Prime Minister we should also remember the 9 years of patience by the Gurindji, we should also rememb...er the AWU - Australian Workers' Union for supporting the pastoral workers and their families, we should remember all the Unions and their Members that lent their support to the Gurindji across those nine years. Fifty-two years later the Gurindji have their land rights, Unions continue to support Indigenous peoples, the Qld ALP has Indigenous Members and its Platform supports Treaties with Indigenous sovereign peoples. On the 2nd of September take a moment to remember that the Labor movement has been with Indigenous Peoples as we campaign for respect and land rights. That's something everyone in the Labor Movement can be very proud of

10.01.2022 Some Wonderful news. Native Title Rights to be recognised tomorrow for Wave Hill Station. The federal judgement ceremony will be held at Jinparrak - the very si...te where Vincent gathered his people for the 1966 Walk-off. Well done to all parties, native title families, the Central Land Council and Wave Hill Station for coming together to make this happen https://www.katherinetimes.com.au//native-title-rights-at/

09.01.2022 Congratulations to Michael Gunner and NT Labor. A special, special shout-out to re-elected Indigenous MPs Selena Uibo: Member for Arnhem, Lawrence Costa MLA: Member for Arafura, Chansey Paech MLA & Ngaree Ah Kit: Member for Karama. Counting continues and the result for Labor may improve further

09.01.2022 Queensland Indigenous Labor Network supports ETU Queensland & NT and their campaign to legislate for Voluntary Assisted Dying in Queensland. Please see below for some words from Peter Simpson talking about his battle with stage 4 melanoma, and his wife, Penny, who is supporting Peter during his battle. For further information about introducing Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation in Queensland, please visit www.legislatevadnow.com

09.01.2022 In addition to the appointment of Chansey Paech MLA as Speaker of the NT Parliament yesterday, Ngaree Ah Kit: Member for Karama was also appointed as the Deputy Speaker of the NT Parliament. It also marks the first time that an Australian Parliament has been lead by both an Indigenous Speaker and an Indigenous Deputy Speaker. Here they both are, in their parliamentary attire, with Selena Uibo: Member for Arnhem, who is the Northern Territory's Minister for Education and Abori...ginal Affairs, and the only Indigenous Cabinet minister serving as part of the Michael Gunner led Territory Labor Government. Congratulations to you all and the Territory Labor team for kicking some big goals over the past few days! : @Selena Uibo

08.01.2022 Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP has declared 2021 as Queensland's Year of Indigenous Tourism!

08.01.2022 Congratulations to James Bambrick, who has been preselected as the Labor Candidate for Traegar in the upcoming state election. James is a descendant of the Pitta Pitta people, and lives in Mount Isa with his partner and two children. He currently serves as the Vice-President of the Mount Isa Labor Branch, and works underground at Mount Isa Mines. Traegar is the second largest electorate in the Queensland Parliament, and it covers Western and Northern Queensland communities such as Mount Isa, Charters Towers, as well as communities in the Gulf of Carpentaria, meaning James will have a big area to cover during the campaign. All the best brother!

08.01.2022 "The demand for treaty or, more accurately, the demand for many treaties must be driven by the cultural authority of each sovereign First Nation. This process must be underpinned by cultural protocol and custom that recognises the many tribal clans within the First Nations." -Teela Reid, Wiradjuri and Wailwan woman Essay in Griffith Review

07.01.2022 Today, the 9th of August, marks the International Day of the World's Indigenous People. As a group that represents Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members of the Australian Labor Party - Queensland Branch, we are all very proud to be descendants of our state's First Nations people. We are also very proud to raise awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues within party units, as well as within the party platform, and we have made great strides in increasi...ng Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation, not just within the party, but in our state's parliament, and in many communities across the state. Of course, there is still more work that is yet to be done. Queensland Labor's promise to establish a Treaty between the State of Queensland and our First Nations people still needs to be formally delivered, and we need to put in more work to protect our languages, our knowledges and our cultural heritage. We will continue to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues are front and centre, particularly within our branches, our party policy platform, and within our associated party units, now, and into the future. Leeanne Enoch MP Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook Lance McCallum MP - Labor for Bundamba Craig Crawford MP

07.01.2022 Thank you to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders who came out to our morning tea in Townsville today. Some really interesting discussions around education, youth justice and much more. #ClosingTheGap

03.01.2022 SEAT OF KARAMA: Emotional scenes at Labor HQ as Ngaree Ah Kit arrives after taking out the seat of Karama. Alongside her family, she arrived holding photos of her father and former Labor minister Jack Ah Kit after he sadly passed away this year.
