24.01.2022 Participant Profile. Staff member Michael who has already raised a whopping $1,700 towards his fundraising goal for $10k. We asked Michael. What made you sign up for Altitude Shift?... Young people have a hard road at the moment with the state of the planet, politics, mental health, family violence, un- and underemployment and just the challenges of growing up. Anything we can do to focus on young people, lead and inspire them is worthwhile and I see Altitude Shift as a very visible and practical way to inspire. A long time ago I was a young man, and appreciate the risk taking of youth in an intellectual sense. Altitude Shift is a chance to appreciate it in a very practical sense, and remind myself of what it is like to be a young person. More specifically, Altitude Shift is a shout out to our foster carers and kinship carers (some of whom will be sharing the glory in our High Anxiety team, hopefully!). We are sometimes a little too glib in the view that anyone can be a foster or kinship carer. Thats not true. It requires a special set of skills, traits and passions to be a carer, and anything we can do to advocate for, and encourage recruitment to, roles as carers is worthwhile. You can sign up too at altitudeshift.org.au

22.01.2022 Participant profile - Kieren Nuttall In early 2019 I started working for Anglicare Victoria after completing my work placement with the residential placement team. During my placement I was able to see how beneficial the foster care program is and how much work and planning it takes to support both the young people needing foster care and families opening up their homes for children and young people. I love my job and am so proud of the work that my team do and would love t...o be able to challenge myself and raise as much money as possible for children and young people whose lives and futures can be so uncertain and full of fear. 20.01.2022 Altitude Shift Ambassador #4 Jackson Taylor MP. State Member for Bayswater & former foster child ... Jackson was 11 years of age when he and his brothers were abruptly removed from their family home. We got pulled out of our family home at about 1am by Human Services and although I knew it was probably the right thing it didnt stop me missing my parents and missing my family home, says Jackson. Jackson worked as a police officer and served as Deputy Mayor of Knox City Council before being elected as the State Member of Bayswater in November 2018. Life growing up as a kid was tough for me and my brothers. My story is certainly not one in isolation. There are many like us. From my time as a Police Officer, I know there are. Ive always been open talking about this. Its so important to not shy away from these hard conversations, we should instead tackle the challenges people face head on. Often that can be what helps to define and shape us. Dont ever think that that no one gives a stuff about you. 19.01.2022 Participant profile - Kirsty Dollery Ive decided to tick a HUGE bucket list item this year and I have signed up to abseil 27 floors in the St James building in Melbourne CBD on Friday the 17th of April to support kids in foster care. Why? To support kids in foster care!... I have been involved with a mentoring program for a few years now. Mentoring programs allows mentors to spend time with youth at risk and help them gain courage and see opportunities to change their lives by having positive adult role models. Most of the young people are either currently in, or have experienced foster care. These kids face fear each and every day - the fear of being in a new home, fear of being apart from family, fear for the future. I will be facing my fears in Altitude Shift to support these kids. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot! Sponsor Kirsty by visiting her fundraising page at https://altitudeshift2020.everydayhero.com/au/kirst

17.01.2022 Due to the escalation of COVID-19, Anglicare Victoria has cancelled its Altitude Shift fundraising event. The health and safety of the community, as well as of staff, volunteers, event participants and vendors is Anglicare Victorias top priority. Paul McDonald, CEO of Anglicare Victoria, said he was disappointed that the fundraising event would no longer go ahead, but the protection of participants and volunteers involved was his primary concern.... At Anglicare Victoria, the welfare of children, young people and families is central to everything we do. It is our immediate priority to ensure our clients, carers and staff are protected and supported through uncertain times ahead, Mr McDonald said. I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who had decided to step out of their comfort zone and abseil to raise money for children living in foster care. As the circumstances surrounding Coronavirus continue to evolve, we must support one another and look out for those in the community who are particularly vulnerable. I am confident we can get through this challenging time if we continue to work together, he said. The abseiling challenge, which was set to take place on the 17th and 18th of April, helps to raise money for vulnerable children currently living in foster care. Anglicare Victoria is contacting all donors to offer a refund. For more information, please refer to our FAQ on altitudeshift.org.au If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact the events team on (03) 9412 6182 or via [email protected]

16.01.2022 Altitude Shift Ambassador #2 Bev Killick. Comedian/Actor/Crummy Mummy "Ive always loved doing adventurous and crazy things (30 years ago). Ive jumped out of a plane, jumped off tall bridges into unknown waters, swam 3km in a croc-infested gorge in Kakadu, eaten revolting food for a dare so jumping off a tall building should be a piece of cake right? Id rather just eat the cake but Im going to do it anyway.... I have chosen to face my fears in support of foster kids by abseiling down 27 floors for Altitude Shift at the tender age of 52. Ive looked after kids whove had a tough start in life. And I personally know that many foster kids face very real fears every day through no fault of their own. Dont get me wrong, I love a good laugh but on a serious note, please join me in supporting Altitude Shift to get behind giving foster kids a better tomorrow. 14.01.2022 Participant profile. Kimberley, Our staff member at Anglicare Victoria tells us why she is keen to participate in this year's event. Read below. . I am lucky. I was brought up loved and cared for. Most of us were, well, so we think! I am heartbroken to say that this couldn't be further from the truth. .... Prior to working with child services, my eyes and mind were closed to the reality that surrounds all of us, every single minute of the day. . I now am fully aware of the reality that Foster kids face and what there "normal is" - and can I say, it can be quite disturbing to know. Some of their stories sound like they are straight out of a horror film -but they are not. These children live in constant fear and can't escape their nightmare - well that is until they are assisted by teams of professionals and volunteers such as our Anglicare Victoria Foster Care Program. . These Programs and Services are vital to ensure the protection and healing of some of our most vulnerable and damaged children. Our Programs rely heavily on government funding, where, unfortunately at times, just covers the basics. Anglicare Victoria desperately needs all our help to be able to provide the best quality of care to these kids. . PLEASE STOP IGNORING THE REALITY THAT IS IN FRONT OF US! . I know most of everyone's attention is directed at assisting those who have been affected by the recent fires around the country. But who is helping these kids? These kids need a lot more help than anyone realises. . I am putting myself out there to do my part to try to raise as many funds for these kids as I possibly can. Please jump onto my support page and donate. Every donation is vital! . THANK YOU FOR PULLING YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND AND ACKNOWLEDGING THESE CHILDREN . Kimberley x . Adventurous by nature, Miki has a passion for any activity that pushes him beyond his comfort zone such as playing shows with his metal band Annihilist, competing on Australian Ninja Warrior TV Show or scaling great heights to capture the perfect photo. Anglicare Victoria supports around 1,300 children and young people each year. They provide foster and residential care, emergency relief, parenting and family services, financial and legal services. 10.01.2022 Altitude Shift Ambassador #1 Jesse abseiling for awareness Twenty-year-old student Jesse Simpson knows from first-hand the fears that foster children face on a daily basis.... He and his younger brother entered foster care just before Jesses 4th birthday and they have been raised together in a large, loving foster family for the past 16 years. That is why Jesse is proud to be stepping out of his comfort zone as an ambassador for Altitude Shift, a thrilling abseiling experience - being held on 17 and 18 April - that is raising awareness and funds for Anglicare Victorias foster care programs. For me, foster care always meant so much more than just having a roof over my head and food on my plate. Foster care has really allowed me to be myself, to forget about my past and to achieve everything that I am capable of, says Jesse. Jesse graduated high school in 2017 and although he aged out of the foster care system two years ago, Jesses foster parents are continuing to support him as he studies Biomedicine at Melbourne University. This is a course I have dreamt of since I was 15. My intentions are to complete a medical degree and spend the rest of my life helping people. When I am not studying, I lead a pretty active life. I have done sky-diving, rock climbing, rafting and enjoy playing basketball, cricket, soccer and field hockey. But I have to confess that Im a little nervous about abseiling 27 floors, which Im sure is understandable. Ive abseiled before but never from such a height. Having said that, Im up for the challenge and pushing my own boundaries, says Jesse. There is no fitness level or experience requirements and Altitude Shift participants will receive full training and support as they go over the edge, descending 113 metres down the iconic St James Building in Bourke St. I think abseiling down a skyscraper is an incredibly visible way to highlight the challenges foster kids face on a daily basis. Jesse knows that foster kids are forced through circumstance to step outside of their comfort zone on a daily basis. Every day they face the fear of being in a new home, the fear of being apart from family, friends and the fear of the future. I challenge others to get out of your comfort zone and join me at Altitude Shift 2020. 05.01.2022 Altitude Shift Ambassador #4 Arj Perera - High-Performance Coach/ Mens Health Advocate/ Father Arj Perera is a father-of-three, high-performance coach and motivates young people to follow their dreams.... I was lucky to come from a very supportive family where we were given every opportunity to succeed in life. Yes, the choice to use these advantages for success was mine (and my brothers), however, there are so many children who are not afforded the same opportunities and this creates great fear and anxiety for them about what future is in store for them, says Arj. If through Altitude Shift, children can feel more empowered to face fears, chase dreams, not let their current situation define their future and learn to become more confident about creating their own futures, I believe we will have succeeded. Arj has been a fitness industry entrepreneur for the past 20 years and is the owner of Bendigo-based fitness centre, Human Mechanics. He is head of strength and conditioning for the Australia Womens Volleyball Team (Volleyroos), has worked with the WNBL Bendigo Spirit team as well as elite national and international athletes. For many people, the great unknown is a great fear. In the mind of young people in the foster care system, I imagine this fear is even greater. Who am I going to live with? Will they love me? Will I be important in their lives? Can I trust strangers to look after me? I have a lot of young staff working for me, I try to instil confidence through supporting them in any way I can. I think young people just need to know someone has their back, they have someone to bounce ideas off who dont necessarily have a solution to a problem but who can offer an opinion based on life experience. Then they are empowered to make their own life decisions. Participants are raising funds to go towards Anglicare Victorias foster care programs. Anglicare Victoria helps around 80,000 children, young people and families in need each year with foster and residential care, emergency relief, parenting and family services, financial and legal services. 04.01.2022 Participant Profile. Alanah Brand is a foster carer and secondary school art teacher and shes seriously afraid of heights. But Alanah is going to face her fears to raise awareness and funds for foster kids by abseiling down a Melbourne high-rise building for Anglicare Victorias thrilling fundraising event, Altitude Shift 2020.... I am completing Altitude Shift to show both the students in my care and students at school that even when you are afraid you can still complete gigantic feats! Alanah is a portrait painter with a Masters in Visual Art and teaches art at Bendigo South East College, where she endeavours to teach all students kindness, resilience, empathy and how they can express themselves through their art. I have been a teacher for seven years and a foster carer for eight months. Being a carer is both challenging and rewarding. In some respects, its similar to teaching, sometimes you take a step forward and other times you take two steps backwards. What I constantly remind myself of is that foster kids dont choose to be in foster care, they come into my care afraid, missing their families and in need of love and support. I endeavour to give each child in my care a safe and loving home, as each child deserves the best start in life. Children are societys future. They are invaluable and they teach me both persistence and patience. Support Alanahs Seriously afraid of heights team fundraising https://altitudeshift2020.everydayhero.com/au/alanah See more

02.01.2022 Participant profile - Nate Street Nate is back to participate for the 7th year ! What a LEGEND. We asked Nate some questions, Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?... I recently turned 40, have lived in Melbourne for 15 years, which is the same amount of time I've been working for the ANZ and a member of VICSES. In the past I was part of Scouts Victoria, where I was a member of the Abseiling team who ran activities for all members and sometimes the public. I've been fascinated by abseiling ever since I saw Gary Sweet do a forward run down one of the lights of the SCG on Police Rescue. Im been married for 6 years, and this year we made the decision to become permanent carers. What made you sign up for Altitude Shift? The chance to undertake such a high abseil. It is the highest one I've ever done. Being able to raise money to help a worthwhile cause like Foster kids was an added bonus. I am a firm believer that kids should only have to worry about being kids, having fun and just getting to enjoy themselves... without having to worry about anything in the adult world. What does helping organisations such as Anglicare Victoria mean to you? Knowing that the work they do for Foster Kids is making a difference. Altitude Shift was part of my decision to go through the permanent care route. Whats your secret to effective fundraising? People need to feel like they are getting something in return, I usually do a few morning teas at work. Also, hit up your networks last. They know you're doing it, but they're more likely to help you reach your target when you're nearly there than start you off. How are you feeling about the actual abseil on event day? If I could do it tomorrow, I totally would! I've tried to do the whole "face your fears" thing and stepping out of my comfort zone... after 7 years people know me too well and call me out on it! My wife on the other hand... shes just happy when I'm back on solid ground! You can support Nate by heading over to his fundraising page https://altitudeshift2020.everydayhero.com/au/nate
