24.01.2022 Monday is CSA (community supported agriculture) box day at our house, this summer! . A box of spring goodness for the week, grown just up the road by The Early Bird Market Garden - we eat whatever we get in the box, and make it work. . Which is just the way I like to cook - use what’s in the garden and make it work. Or this season, till we get our place sorted, whatever’s in the box. I love how this forces me to do things I wouldn’t otherwise have thought of on a Monday nigh...t - like making a big jar of lacto-fermented whole radishes, which is what’s about to happen now. . A 3% brine should do it, a bit of fennel seed, and we’ll be eating these for lunch in a week . Thankyou for the beautiful local food, EarlyBird crew! . . #csa #communitysupportedagriculture #localfoodsystem #foodjustice #fairfood #permaculture #yum See more

24.01.2022 Making Seed Balls: for getting things growing in unlikely places - a link to this how-to is below... . Seedball wha? Yep, they are just what they sound like - a small ball of clay and soil, with seeds inside. NOT for eating, but for planting. Seedballs are incredibly easy to make, and are a rather excellent way to get things growing in areas that don’t usually have much plant growth. . The basic idea of a seedball is that you make it, distribute it to marginal areas whi...ch are hard to get the right plants established in (usually because of lack of water) and wait. The beauty of this technique is that the seedballs will sit there, protected by their clay shell, and then, in a large rain event - melt, and germinate (hopefully). This same rain event has hopefully created enough soil moisture for those seeds to establish. . And the kicker is because it’s easy to make a LOT of seedballs at once, the chances of some of them succeeding is pretty high. . We’ve used seedballs to seed very arid zones to native pioneer tree and fodder species with great success. Or, you could use wildflower seeds, or whatever works for where you live. Go have a read. It’s a great weekend activity. . https://www.milkwood.net//making-seed-balls-for-getting-t/ . * We acknowledge that permaculture owes the roots of its theory and practice to traditional and Indigenous knowledges, from all over the world. 16.01.2022 You can grow mushrooms in lots of different ways. And once you demystify the process, it’s not that different to growing plants - it’s just a different kingdom. And if you get hooked, no garden or home will ever be without edible mushrooms again. @shellwalker17 is well underway!... Our Blue Shimeji mushrooms are coming on by the bucketload. Growing food at home is simple and rewarding, especially when there are such great resources out there for us. The mushroom chapter of the Milkwood book is easy to follow, informative and inspiring! And it works!!! The really great thing about growing mushrooms is that you can do it pretty much anywhere, no matter where you live. And then...you can eat them. Share them. Ferment or pickle them! What’s your favourite mushroom recipe?

13.01.2022 Friday afternoon in our kitchen... . It’s a ‘filming week’, this week. Which means mushrooms absolutely everywhere, lots of demonstrating all things inoculation, weird piles of straw in the hallway, lunchtime picnics (slightly staged but still delicious), lots of mess and ALSO getting closer to sharing our mushroom growing course with y’all. . Big thanks to team Milkwood, especially @isisstpierre for wrangling everything and everyone, and our filmmaker @laravanraay ... ... . And we even got to shoot a bit of this weeks lessons in our new kitchen, which makes me very happy. . I think it’s going to be 5-mushroom pizza on the menu for dinner tonight... . . #nowastemushroomcultivation #allthemushrooms #onlinecourse #milkwoodmushrooms See more

11.01.2022 Back in the game! Lacto-fermented dill pickles, here we come. . As per @sandorkraut ‘s directions we always stick with 3 tablespoons of salt per litre of water for the brine - this is about 5.4% and does the trick in 14 days. A salty, sour, whole dill pickle results... which is absolute heaven on a stick, in our books. . Don’t forget your vine leaves for tannin (helps keep the pickles crunchy) and at least two heads of garlic in the crock also, because garlic.... . Big thanks to @fat_pig_farm Sadie for growing and gifting these gorgeous gherkins, and also to chef Rob for deciding he’d done enough pickles for one week which meant we scored these leftovers (yr cheque’s in the mail, Rob)... . Can you tell I’m excited? YAY DILL PICKLES, WE’VE MISSED YOU. Only two weeks till crunch-town, oh I can barely wait . . #wildfermentation #dillpickles #overexcited #picklelife See more

10.01.2022 Elderflower everything, at the moment. Vinegar, cordial, shrub, ferment, syrup. If you live where this is flowering currently, and there’s rain forecast (like there is where we live) get outside and grab some! More pollen (which can wash away in rain) means more flavour and goodness for you and your brews. . Don’t forget to snip the stems off, it’s the flowers that are the edible part . . And here's a bunch of things to do with them - https://www.milkwood.net//making-wild-...fermented-elderflow/ . 08.01.2022 So good to see new foragers blossoming in laneways and all around ------------------------ @littlenestingtree, a student of our #PermacultureLivingCourse, writes: When we decided to sign up to the @milkwood_permaculture online course I popped my thinking cap on and decided to make a start with the things I already knew. ... I know very basic wild foods, so we set out to start collecting what I knew I could identify and was safe for my family to consume. We started with some wild fennel seeds - they are easy to identify and smell like aniseed or liquorice. Today we harvested the seeds. They are delicious baked on sourdough bread, great for a cuppa tea and there are many other uses for this abundant seed. Well done, @littlenestingtree . We can’t wait to see what else you find. . . . 06.01.2022 There’s an important post over at A Growing Culture today - go have a read. . A little while ago we started adding a ‘acknowledgment of knowledge origins’ paragraph (it's still a work in progress) to what we publish and do, based on some of the same thinking mentioned in the above post (plz go read the whole thing tho, not just this square)... . We all have a long way to go and a lot to unpack, learn, re-learn and act apon, but learn we shall. It will take us and our children... lifetimes to do. But it is also the only way forward, if we want a truly just world. . . * We acknowledge that permaculture owes the roots of its theory and practice to traditional and Indigenous knowledges, from all over the world.
