Parties also must take improving cultural diversity in parliaments as seriously as improving women’s representation. All political parties should look at adopting targets. The fact is targets work. The experience of affirmative action for women in the Labor party shows that the introduction of targets will lead to a more representative Parliament.'' See more

09.01.2022 Convocation of Champions 2018 - Announcement of Speakers 1: Mr Mark Irwin, Mayor - City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin was born and raised in Scarborough, attending local primary and high schools. He has a Bachelor of Sports Science and a Diploma in Management. Mayor Irwin is married with three children who are all involved in local community groups and sporting clubs. He and his wife operated a health and fitness business for 20 years.... Mayor Irwin is passionate about community service and has been an active member of Scarborough Surf Life Saving Club since he was nine years old. Among many other positions, he was President of Scarborough Surf Lifesaving Club for five years and President/Chair of Surf Life Saving WA for six years, while holding board positions at national level. Among other community-based roles, Mayor Irwin has held board positions on the Small Business Development Corporation, Stirling Business Association and the Doubleview Primary IPS. Through these roles, Mayor Irwin has forged successful relationships with local, state and national bodies. Mayor Irwin provides strategic leadership to the Council and is dedicated to improving relationships and providing guidance to the community. Please meet another talented speaker @ Convocation of Champions 2018 Gamboripai Josephine Zimama is the Youth Pre...sident of the Organisation of African Communities WA Inc, among other voluntary roles she holds in various capacities. Commonly known as Josephine, she is passionately engaged in all forms of community work and particularly drawn to creating opportunities for empowering young people. She is also a very active member of her own Azande community, heavily engage to the growth and development of the Azande culture in WA. Currently completing her Bachelor of Science (Health Promotion) at Curtin University, Josephine hopes to use this skill to help create interventions that bring awareness of mental health issues within refugee and migrant communities. Josephine also played a significant role in the establishment of the STOP the Violence Campaign launched through OAC. She assisted in the coordination of the train the trainer program, equipping African youth with the skills and knowledge to support their individual communities. She is currently assisting with ‘Let’s Make it Happen’ program, a school-based program that utilises the skills of the young people who graduated from the Train the Trainer to provide mentoring to high school students through a range of modules. Josephine is a great role model for young people, especially young women from African backgrounds. As a registered speaker with the United Nations Australian Association WA branch, Josephine presents on her journey of growing up in Australia and issues she faced as a former refugee to assist new arrivals in their settlement. 05.01.2022 Our next speaker at Convocation of Champions 2018: Here is the young, fresh and dynamic diversity consultant Elizabeth Lang Mrs Elizabeth Lang is a passionate human rights advocate and has presented on a number of platforms, nationally and internationally including at the UNHCR in Geneva Switzerland in June 2016. Originally from South Sudan, she arrived in Australia on the humanitarian visa with her family in 1998. As Founder and CEO of Diversity Focus, Elizabeth provides di...versity consulting and training on a range of topics to welfare, health and legal sectors. In line with her passion in domestic and family violence education, she facilitates a range of specialist training on understanding domestic and family violence in cross-cultural contexts. Currently completing her PhD at Curtin University on ‘Conceptualising Domestic and Family Violence in the Frame of Collectivist Cultures’, she seeks to broaden the current legal and conceptual framework of domestic and family violence. Elizabeth is also a Sessional Academic at Curtin University School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work teaching a range of multidisciplinary units since 2015. She serves as the Organisation of African Communities (OAC) WA Vice President (Operations), is the WA Representative for the Federation of Ethnic Communities Council Australia (FECCA) Women’s Committee and also on the National Committee of the Australian Refugee Action Network (ARAN) advocating on refugee issues. As a dynamic and engaging speaker, Elizabeth authentically connects with her audience in a manner that is both positive yet challenging. Believing strongly that each possesses the power to positively impact the world through the art of first mastering oneself from within, her presentation on Leading with Your Heart focuses on precisely ‘how’.
