21.01.2022 #Repost @zoe.dietitian.lovewhatyoueat . When you follow someone else’s advice on what, when or how much to eat, you stop listening to your own body’s unique wisdom. You can lose touch with your sense of appetite and what you enjoy eating or what truly satisfies you.... You can end up basing your food choices solely on calories or how you feel about your body in that moment, not based on what you actually feel like eating. You may not even be hungry, but eat because you’ve been lead to believe the food is a good choice. If you’re sick of being dictated to food wise or just plain confused with how to eat, perhaps it’s time to stop looking outwards for dietary advice, and instead, start tuning inwards. Learning how to tune inwards, is a key aspect of intuitive eating. 13.01.2022 #Repost @thoughtfulnutrition . Before you think about starting that new diet, read below ~Decreased metabolism: When our body receive less calories and nutrients than it's used to (I.e. Calorie restrictive diets), our bodies actually slow down our metabolism in order to survive on a lower energy (calorie) intake. When we do diet after diet, our metabolism continues to slow down each time... Resulting in a unhealthy, sluggish metabolism. ... ~Weight cycling: Multiple studies have shown that ~95% of diets don't work in the long term, making successful weight loss unsustainable. This means that if you lose weight from a diet, then you are highly likely to gain the weight back, which then causes you to go on another diet, only for the cycle to repeat. The cycle of weight loss weight gain weight loss weight gain. ~Poor body image: The number one reason for dieting and the number one goal of dieting is weight loss. Typically, people desire weight loss for its "aesthetic" results. This turns dieting into a way to boost self esteem. However, dieting doesn't cure poor body image, it can actually make it worse. If our goal is to lose X amount of pounds and we reach that goal, it's very likely that we still won't be happy with our appearance. ~Increased binge eating: When we reduce our calorie intake or cut out a food group, it only makes us more hungry and increases our cravings for that food group. You might say that you are just going to eat one piece of cake (or other kind of sweet food), but when you go to eat it, you crave more and more because you don't allow yourself to enjoy that food. ~Increased risk of eating disorder: Whenever disordered eating habits, such as calorie restriction, fasting, cutting out certain food groups, or using exercise to compensate for calories consumed, are practiced there's always an increased risk of developing an eating disorder. According to NEDA, ~25% of extreme dieters will develop an eating disorder. What are some other common side effects of dieting? Drop them below
11.01.2022 #Repost @joyfuelnutrition . In a society that tells us to do whatever it takes to lose weight, body acceptance is an act of rebellion. It is pretty much impossible to diet without engaging in disordered eating behaviors. And disordered eating causes harm to our bodies by depriving them of basic nourishment and to our mental and emotional wellbeing when we believe our worthiness lies in shrinking ourselves.... Intuitive eating provides a way out by allowing us to tune into our body's needs and to honor them without judgement. When we do that, we begin to build trust withing ourselves and our body will most likely settle at its "set point" weight, it's homeostasis or "happy place." This may not be the weight we want to be and accepting our body's natural size may take time. It may be a difficult and painful process. But we are not human calculators or cookie cutters. And your body's own genetic blueprint makes you, uniquely you. Your worth (and your health!) lies beyond your size. #healthateverysize #HAES #haesdietitian #healthyweight #BMI #newyearsdiet #disorderedeating #eatingdisorders #edrecovery #edwarrior #healthisnotasize #dietsdontwork #intuitiveeating #intuitiveeatingdietitian #antidiet #nondietdietitian #selfcompassion #bodykindness
08.01.2022 #Repost @drashleysouthard . You've got to get beneath the unwanted behavior and explore WHY some part of you desperately clings to this way of behaving, even though it comes with consequences. Simply knowing it's "not good" for you and trying to will yourself to "be better" is not enough to create sustainable, emotionally healthy change. Exploring the WHYs is what I call doing "the deeper work." Slowing down to be with your Self long enough to see the fears and hurts that r...emain hidden in the shadows of your disordered relationship with food. Bringing this pain into the light, and getting to know it in a real way. Learning that there's an even deeper layer under these emotions, where your vulnerable and tender needs lie. Things like compassion, safety, understanding, validation, and love...the universal needs of all humans. Disordered eating doesn't just come about for no reason. There's always a reason, and it's always way deeper than what we see on the surface. When you get clear on why this behavior came to be for you, you appreciate that "lifestyle" changes to your daily menu are not the answer your psyche is looking for. You begin to "feed" your Self with curiosity, permission to feel, and a compassion for all parts of you. And when your Emotional Self is nourished with emotional ingredients, your Body Self will naturally restore a relationship with food that is physically nourishing and balanced. 07.01.2022 #Repost @wakeupandsmelltherosay . restrictive diets create disconnection between you and your body. the types of diets i’m referring to are anything that employs strict rules dictating when and what to eat/not eat. while dieting, you learn to ignore natural signals of your basic human needs (i.e., hunger, fatigue) and begin to rely on external cues (i.e., times to eat, food rules, numbers) to tell you when and what to eat.... first, your body loses trust in you. when you consume less calories than your body needs or refuse to eat even when you’re hungry, your body goes into stress mode. it starts to prepare itself for being starved. your metabolism slows because your body thinks it needs to hold onto the extra energy in case it gets deprived again. your weight fluctuates easily. your body starts reacting to stress resulting in symptoms of bloating and discomfort.. in turn, YOU start losing trust in your body too because you can’t understand why it’s not responding the way you want it to. it seems like it’s working against you. to heal your relationship with food and your body, you‘ll want to direct your attention towards reconnecting with your body. you can start by relearning how to listen and respond to internal hunger cues. start by eating when you’re hungry. if you’ve completely lost touch with your hunger cues, start by eating regularly even in the absence of hunger, until your hunger cues return. your body’s needs matter!! #wakeupgoals See more

05.01.2022 Trash-mags love to hype diets. Throughout January prepare for the onslaught of stupid diet and weight loss advice.... remind yourself that this stuff doesn't work and will consume you. 05.01.2022 #Repost @drashleysouthard . Addiction. Eating Disorders. Self-Harm. Pornography. From the outside looking in, these are "dysfunctional" and destructive behaviors that only wreak havoc on a person's life. But if we stop there, we miss the incredible ways in which these behaviors are trying to HELP a person...a function in the dysfunction, if you will.... All of these behaviors, regardless of their form, are subconsciously created to provide emotional and psychological protection and coping. Protection from feeling deeply painful levels of Shame, Hurt, Grief, and Unworthiness. Coping with a core sense of "not good enough" while trying to survive and thrive in life. Until these deeper layers of personal worth and grief are identified ~and resolved ~ a person will continue to NEED these more destructive coping mechanisms for emotional support. Trying to make these "dysfunctional" behaviors go away without doing the deeper psychological work is like putting more gas in a car with a broken engine and expecting it to drive. Not only does this not work, but it will likely lead to more relapse and more dysfunctional behaviors to cope with the ever-growing shame. Looking beyond the behavior to find the emotional and psychological function is a crucial step in healing. 04.01.2022 Dear @celestebarber - Please re-do this image! I think she has her swimmers on backwards?! . When I was a teenager Elle Macpherson was in her prime. Images like this I adored, I admired and I envied - often simeotaneously, which was a confusing mix of feelings as a teen. . There was no one around to tell the 15 year old me that images like this objectify and reduce women to their body parts.... . At 15, all's I knew is that I wanted to be like this image. Look like this image. Act like this image. . As a grown woman, if I heard a 15 year old say that, I'd be mortified and incredibly sad for her. . "No darling," I would want to say to her, "You don't want to look like, be like and act like this. This is not who you are and your body is not an ornament for the world to admire. Please dear girl, I want you to know that the size of your body does not mean anything about your value as a human being. Now please go out there and live your life and focus on the things that really matter . I wish there was a @celestebarber back in the 90's to highlight the absurdity of such images. It really would have helped that 15 year old girl who was trying to be everyone else but herself. . 03.01.2022 #Repost @zoe.dietitian.lovewhatyoueat . How on earth did healthy eating get so complicated?
